Dexter’s Slat Grille Purchase

UPDATE:  This slattie was bought in early 2010 and resold a few months later.  It demonstrates how a little work can go a long way.  Dexter found a variety of deals using craigslist and managed to improve this inexpensively.

Below are the before pics.  Here are some after pics.

Wow…Hard to believe that someone that had an old slat grille didn’t really know what they had…..Unless they lived under a rock for the last 40+ years…

The data plates are missing on the glovebox. I need to remove the front bumper in order to search for the SN# on the frame. Based on the air deflector under the hood, the radiator deflectors and of course the grill, this is in fact a Slat. The diamond plate on the rear is covering the “WILLYS” script, but it can be seen from underneath.

List price was $2000, but it needed some rear differential work. In the end, I walked out with it for $2250. Considering I can sell the bumpers, rollbar, soft top, tow bar, diamond plate, tire carrier, CJ mirrors for hopefully $400, I think it was a heck of a deal.

I don’t plant on doing a full restore right away. The MVCC at Tower Park (Military Swap Meet) is coming up in a few weeks, and it’s only 15 minutes from my home. I’ll be looking for original parts for my slat in order to give it that “military face lift.” It’s nice to be able to find a Jeep that I can drive and enjoy right away. As time goes on, and as the pockets get deeper, I’ll slowly restore it.
