(04/18/2011) What’s on the front cowl? This seems priced a bit high.

I’ve seen this box on the cowl many times before. It usually contains an electric hydraulic pump for the plow. These older units were rather large and didn’t fit under the hood as easily as the ones that were belt driven by the fan belt. I’d bet that it contains some sort of hydraulic pump.

Thanks Steve .. I’ve never seen it done quite this way. I assume these were these all owner mods or did someone start doing this for others?

Most of the ones I’ve seen were owner mods – usually gas station plow jeeps. I’ve seen quite a few and they seem to always be on 48-49 2A’s. They must pre-date the plows that had the electric pump and piston all in one unit on the plow rig. I’ve seen my fair share of those as well.

Usually all of them worked a manual angle Meyers plow via an electric switch for up and down mounted on the dash somewhere within the drivers reach.

The coolest one I’ve ever seen had the switch mounted right on the tranny shift cane. Very ingenious since this is where the drivers right hand would be most of the time – lift as you shift into reverse and drop as you shift into first gear. A lot less hand movements
