FROM September 24, 2011 … Here is how the scam works.

Rob is sharing the email exchange he had with the GPW scam:

Here is the latest on the 42 GPW scam including the fake invoice from Google Checkout. The request for the Western Union money order is not how Google Checkout transfers funds.

Rob dropped “Gracie” a request about the GPW and sends Rob a note:

I’m going to spend the next 2 weeks in my favorite European destination, Spain(Costa Brava). I would appreciate very much if you could send the payment to Google Checkout agent from Spain, Google Checkout has also been informed to ensure that everything runs smoothly for our transaction. You don’t need to worry about the shipping process, it has been prepared and is proceeding as planned. RE: 1942 GPW Ford 4×4 Willys Military Jeep

The vehicle is already at the shipping company warehouse stored in a sealed container along with all the documents, ready to be transported. A few days ago, I was assured by a potential buyer that he would definitely like to buy the jeep and has the funds. After all necessary transport arrangements have been made, I’ve been screwed out because he didn’t actually had all the money. Now, I find myself more than just a bit constrained by situation and I need to sell fast before I leave on vacation with my daughter. Due to the nature of sale, I’d like to conclude this transaction in a timely manner using the escrow system provided by Google Checkout, they basically provide a secure environment designed to facilitate the payment transfer between buyer and seller. Please note that a refundable deposit will be paid (50% of the total price), as proof of your intention to complete the purchase transaction. The money will be held in trust by Google Checkout. I will arrange for the jeep to be transported to your home address (free of charge) and to eliminate any concerns, you will have a 10 days inspection period, prior purchase approval. Into a possible worst-case scenario, after the inspection period ends and you’ve decided not to keep the vehicle your money will be refunded in full and shipping back will be my concern. If you’ve decided to proceed with the acquisition process, please email me back with the following information. – Your Full Name and Shipping Address (Home Address, City, State, zip/Postal Code) – Info. required by Google Checkout, they will contact you with simple, easy to follow step by step guidelines. – Your Phone Number: (Home,Mobile,Office) – Info. required by the shipping company, they will call you with delivery/pickup instructions 1 day ahead so you can communicate what time schedule works best for you to receive the unit. I look forward to your response Gracie Williams Gracie Williams / Sales and Marketing Director STF-MSN™ Oil & Energy Industry Inc. Dallas TX. Thanks for letting me know. The Craigslist ad was from Billings, MT which is only a day’s drive from our location in Idaho. Is that where the jeep is located or is it in Texas. I am very interested and won’t pay less than asking price if it looks as good as the pictures.

I’m very sorry, but right now I’m located on a offshore oil platform. Don’t get me wrong but here we can communicate only by radio or internet satellite connection. There is absolutely no GSM network coverage available, please understand I prefer to be contacted via e-mail. RE: 1942 GPW Ford 4×4 Willys Military Jeep

Hello, This vintage 1942 GPW Ford 4×4 Willys Military Jeep has been perfectly restored and immaculately maintained. I inherited this jeep from my father, but it’s time for me to let it go. I have a clean & clear Texas title in hand with my name on it, registration and inspection is current until Aug 2012. Here’s your chance to own a unique piece of genuine military history for only $4000 I’ve reduced my initial asking price since I need to find a buyer before my upcoming vacation take place, so I can’t afford to waste time with negotiations. As I said before, this jeep is in absolutely pristine condition and to support my argument I’ve added here a brief video presentation. Boy, talk about red flags! She’s on an offshore oil rig and can’t be reached except by email. She’s going on vacation and wants to sell fast. The Jeep is in Texas, not Montana. The Jeep is already packed in a shipping container. She only wants 50% up front. The buyer has 10 days to change his mind and she’ll pay the return shipping charge (HA! Who does that???). AND she wants the money sent to Spain. I bet if I said I’ll deal with whoever is watching her daughter in Montana while she’s on the oilrig this slimeball would cook up another creative cover story.

I just wonder how many other vehicles he or she is posting for sale? I wonder if people from other countries are trying to buy this Jeep?

  3. Jeff

I saw this on the DesMoines craigslist a couple of days ago for either $ 4999 or $ 5999 but it has since been removed.

This is either beginning to be a common scam or this person(s) are doing this all over. I live in Indiana and have flagged ads in our local small paper for classic muscle cars like a 69 RS/SS Camaro for $5000. (riiight). They are always out of state. There have been several. I have not seen any in the last 6 months or so.
