Here’s a photograph from a December 1941 issue of Mechanix Magazine that shows a Ford GP participating in war games at the dawn of the US’s official entry into WWII.

The aircraft is a rare (203 priduced) Curtiss O-52 Owl, a prewar Army spotter plane.
Before the war, circa 1940-41, the Army decided to use light planes in the role. So they bought Taylorcraft L-2s, Aeronca L-3s, and the one most widely used, the Piper L-4. The L-4 was a slightly modified J-3 Cub.
They were lighter, less expensive and could easily “live” in the field with Army units.
