This is only the 2nd one of these I’ve ever seen. The first is on my buddy, Mike’s, 1955 Willys Pickup Scheneker Back Hoe being restored. We showed it to Dave Eilers when he was here, and also to noted Willys WWII restorer, Joe Hall, Vintage Wiring of Maine. Neither remembered seeing one. We all agreed it had to be from an earlier application. Well, now we know the source, the WWII Ford built GPA amphibious Jeep. Go to eBay and view the other pix. There are two handles. One runs the prop and the other engages the belt driven bilge pump. Both can be engaged or run one at a time. We still don’t know all it did on the Back Hoe. The big shaft runs the main hydraulic pump. We think maybe the belt ran an air compressor to help keep dirt from around the unit. We don’t know yet who built it, but I’ll speculate Spicer. It has 3753 stamped on it, maybe that’s a S/N. I didn’t check Mike’s and now the cab is back on the frame. Tell us more if you can. We’re waiting.

While this site was having a problem, we have learned a little more about this thing. It’s initial use was only on the Ford built GPA Amphibious Jeep, and several pictures show them there on the G 503 site. So far I haven’t learned the original part #. As these amphibs were junked or repurposed, a few PTO units found new uses as they are a bolt on Jeep fit. We think, at least right now, that the 1955 Willys Scheneker Back Hoe came right out of the Buffalo Plant so equipped. I have heard several instances where leftover WWII Ford parts were used in later Willys production. This has been a fun Willys learning experience, and without these great sites it couldn’t happen.
