That is a Massey Ferguson tractor behind the cj in the first pic.Massey Ferguson used Perkins diesel engines in their Farm tractors, the Perkins diesel was also used in the cj.

always wanted a diesel Jeep – now diesel fuel in PA has skyrocketed in price, if I found one I wouldn’t be able to fuel it up

Just don’t get stuck behind one on a trail ride…what comes out of that tail pipe is rotten stuff! The group soon made him be the tail gunner.

I read somewhere that the later CJs like the ones in this brochure used the Isuzu Diesel. Was that also a Perkins motor?

In 1986 I tried to buy an advertized new Jeep pickup with a French diesel – although advertized, no dealer had one. I bought a 1986 Ford Ranger with a 2.3L Mitsubishi turbo diesel. It was the best pickup I ever owned. It gave me 40MPG unloaded, loaded to the max, summer, winter – always 40MPG. The only maintenance over 300,000 miles was oil changes. After I wrecked it the engine went to a boat and I think is still powering the boat. If diesel fuel was fairly taxed (both Fed and State) it would be the fuel of choice in the US. It is cheaper to refine then gasoline and before governments jacked to taxes, back in the ’60s and ’70s, into the ’80s it was cheaper then the lowest gasoline at the pump.

I used to drive the cj Tugs in the air force that had the nissan diesel, not a speedy thing, but certainly a power house. I’ve only ever seen one ford ranger diesel, in a junkyard, but it was cool to see.

I think diesel is so expensive now because the oil companies can price it however they like, truckers are not going to stop using it, and they can put a surcharge on.

Dave you are most likely correct. The Perkins diesel was used in the 60 s CJ s. Not sure what the connection between the tractor and the cj is other than they are both diesel powered. : )
