    I did not know that those locking nuts were around for that long. I wonder if they held the patent and when they were first invented.

    Elastic stop nuts have been in use since the mid 1920’s and were approved for use on military aircraft during WW2. For high heat locations steel self locking nuts and even silver plated self locking nuts should be used but they’re rather expensive when compared to the usual grade 5 hardware prices. Aviation hardware supply stores are an excellent source of special fasteners needed for critical strength areas to avoid high speed disassembly during operation due to low strength fasteners. This can hurt.

    I didn’t realize “Elastic Stop Nut” was a brand name- that’s what we called them in the factory I was working in back in the ’80s, and that was how they were listed in the tool crib parts book. I used to use them on my ’70 Triumph motorcycle-just the thing for fender bolts, and other places where the regular nuts would vibrate off.
