Good God wait till the military guys get a hold of this one if in fact its not a 50R model .17 bids and its up around $4000 Generally the guys looking for this model winch know exactly what there looking and have done there research so I guess its on them . Ive been collecting PTO winches for a long time and have never come across a 50R but do know complete and nice they sell for at least $5000 all day long

You can tell it is a y50r because of the winch handle and the shape of the end caps. I own a ramsey 50 mounted to my m38.. Also the hanger bearing on this auction is homemade, a real one is cast bronze and will not have the tab welded onto it. The drive shafts, pto, and pto lockout all look correct but are also all available as repop.

Here is my chat with the seller

Ebay implemented a new policy where they charge you for what the final bid would be when it was canceled, so if I cancel now, they will charge me 120 min since it’s in the auto category etc. you are only allowed to cancel an auction that has bid one time per year without being charged and I’ve used that one already. It will be easier if I just wait until the end then have the buyer cancel the purchase, that way, I’ll have the entire amount refunded to me.

    Dear sparrowhawk_inc,

You can cancel the bids and end the listing without it it costing you anything. You can then relist for what is really is. I bet you still get a good price for it just not what a true ramsey 50r would sell for. It is really dis-honest to leave a known fake up without even adding something to the listing to let people know.

Thanks for the heads up, I bought a m38a1 that this was mounted to and didn’t really know the difference. Now there are bids on the item, eBay will not let me cancel or change the auction without a big fee. I’ll run the auction out and let the high bidder know and if they don’t want it then that is fine.

    Hi,

I just wanted to let you know it does not appear to be a ramsey 50r winch you have. It appears to be a ramsey y50r winch lengthened to resemble a 50r. Also your pillow block is homemade, the only real ramsey 50 parts you have is the pto, driveshafts, and the lock out for the pto. I know these winches well, and have a ramsey 50 mounted to my m38.

I recently sold a COMPLETE 50R setup, and i can tell you that the bearing support, winch, and lever lock are not original. It is missing the bearing support alignment bracket also. And i doubt the winch frame is either. Controller is the only thing that i feel is Ramsey….. Ramsey also molded casting numbers into the parts, and i am not seeing these casting numbers. I will gladly reply to emails with pics of original pieces.

Even if this is a say a y50R winch (which I believe your analysis), wouldn’t it add a lot of value to my M38? The real 50r winches are almost impossible to find and looks like they will be $5000+, (about the value of M38s not so long ago) so even a winch similar might be better than nothing at all. What would be the value increase to an M38 even with one like this? Plus even this one would look quite impressive on an M38!

  6. Dennis

I looked the earlier referenced websites saying that even it is fitted it wont work, therefore I wont be bidding on this one! Thanks for your analysis!!!!!

  7. Bill

I don’t think it would add a lot of value to your m38. Yes it adds the coolness factor of a pto winch but the real prize for an m38 owner is the ramsey 50 or 50r. The pto that is included with this setup is worth $1000 so that does help. I wouldnt see the value of the setup being more than $2000 at best.

  8. Dennis

Thanks I agree with your estimate. I sent a question also the seller on the model of it, with again no posting of the question or reply. Bid is at $4300 now!

Thanks guys. I’m a novice and was about to buy the winch and set up. I did have pictures of a 50R and it didn’t look the same so I started to google and hit on this website with all your info. Sparrowhawk – I have had another issue of my own on a listing with Ebay and had to cancel the listing. Ebay is one of the few organizations that a person will actually answer the phone when you call and get you quickly to someone that will assist you. They cancelled the auction for me – so I could relist. I’ll be looking at the winch when it comes back out to bid. Stan

Hey, this is Sparrowhawk_Inc from the eBay listing discussed above. I have learned a bunch about original winches over the past few months, after this specific winch was discussed. I purchased a restored m38a1 with this winch mounted on it only to discover, from a few emails during the auction that it was a modified model y50r. I was told it was all original when I bought the jeep. I ended up telling the buyer about the mistake before the deal was finalized, he was happy, so all was good. Thanks for all the info and education

  12. John Knowles

Hello, My name is John Knowles, I live in Mont Albert, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. I have a Ramsey model 50 PTO winch head and mounting frame. It apparently came of a damaged UN vehicle and was brought back to Aus. When I got the winch it had no cable fitted and had been heavily painted in UN white. It has been sitting around in dry storage for many, many years, recently I was toying with the idea of putting front & rear PTO winches on my 110 Land Rover just for the hell of it so I got out the Ramsey and started to clean it up. As I cleaned it up I found it to be in very good condition but I noticed on the ID tag that it was rated at 3500lbs so I started to do some research into this model winch. From what I can gather they are quite collectable so maybe someone on this forum may know a person/collector looking for this model winch, or is it something i should list on Ebay
The ID tag is as follows
Ramsey Winch Mfg Co Tulsa Okla, Model 50, Capacity 3500, Serial Number 9317.
It also has the Bronze engage/ disengage lever.
The winch has been completely stripped, cleaned, new seals, re assembled & fresh lubricant.

    Regards John Knowles

    John,

If you’d like to email me photos, I’d be happy to share them on eWillys so you can get some feedback on what you have. If it is the right unit, it can be worth quite a bit. Feel free to email me at d@ewillys.com.

    Thanks,

    – Dave

That winch is worth about 7500 to 9000 complete. I sold a mostly complete unit a few weeks ago (3500 lb model) for $8000 to a jeep restorer. He menrioned he would pay 9 to 10k for a complete one. If the deal falls thrlugh, let me know and ill pass on yojr info.

Hi, I would like thank the forum members for their input and comments with regards to my Ramsey R50 winch head.

I have listed it on Ebay so we will see what happens.

    All the best and thanks

    Regards John Knowles
