For those with the old school knowledge was there any special reason for the spare tire to be on this side? Was there other Lefty differences? Just looks like the tire would obstruct one’s rearview of the passenger’s mirror.

Good question. It had to do with changes in state laws.

For a short period of time, March, 3rd through April,14th of 1948, the Willys Overland factory switched the normal location of the spare tire mount on the passenger’s side to amount on the driver’s side, which in turn necessitated the bow pockets be moved to the passenger-side. Thus they are called a “Lefty”.

The serial number range was from #176,061 through #185,769 … though there were some exceptions.

Lots of Lefty questions and research here — http://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/calling-all-leftys_topic16021_page1.html

This is listed on the Green Bay Craigslist but the description and map says Elk Grove, IL. Any idea which is correct?
