Doesn’t look all that ugly to me.

“I have decided to part with my stock workhorse driver 3A. This is a great “drive-it-like-it-is” rig or a perfect candidate for a body tub kit.

It’s ugly but a very solid driver. Most of the work you usually have to do when you drag home an old Jeep has been done.

I routinely drive this Jeep on 150+ mile day trips without issues. It’s seen off-roading adventures at the NH Trail Ride and Rausch Creek, PA. Used but not abused.

The Saturn overdrive allows easy cruising speeds of 55 mph or better. I pulled the original 3A motor and replaced with fresher, stronger MB motor out of a genset. I will include the original motor with the sale if you want it. I will also include a fully functioning period correct Scheneker snowplow with Hy-Lo pump, a worn but functional vinyl BestTop and doors, and a bolt on roll bar.

Work done since 2016:
New wheel bearings, king pin bearings, tie rod ends, drag link kit, bell crank kit (no more death wobble!).
T90 transmission completely rebuilt with NOS 2nd gear synchro assembly and Nachi bearings (no Chinese junk!).
D16 transfer case completely disassembled and rebuilt.
New Saturn Overdrive installed
Original engine swapped with lower hour MB stamped motor from PE-95 Genset. Original “3J” stamped motor included in the sale if desired
Starter rebuilt
Generator freshened up and mated with new voltage regulator
Flywheel resurfaced
New ring gear
New pilot bushing
New clutch, carrier, throwout bearing & clutch cross shaft seal & spring kit
New coil
New spark plugs & wires
New thermostat
New valve cover gasket and PCV valve
New Spicer u-joints
Carter carb rebuilt with quality kit
New fuel tank, fuel pump, & sending unit, and all new fuel lines
New oil lines
New intake manifold.
New Walck’s wiring harness
New Walck’s exclusive leaf springs (not the junk Crown or Omix ones!)
New exhaust system
New shocks
New 6V battery
No doubt there’s more that I have forgotten.

Tub – Tub is solid but it’s a patchwork of panels, filler, and quick paint jobs. It’s rugged and very useable but not pretty on close inspection. It’s not a fragile rot box and will last for years as-is. Something to be said about scratching the paint and not stressing out over it. Hood/fender/tailgate are good.

Windshield – Original windshield was destroyed last year when the strap holding it broke and it flew up while being trailered at highway speed. The current windshield frame is rough but workable. Vent is broken. Glass is brand new.

Frame – Excellent. No major damage or other issues found.

Drivetrain – Excellent. Small exhaust tick where intake/exhaust manifold are mated. It’s not so bad that I wanted to chase after it.

Other stuff – There is a slight oil leak coming either from the oil pump (gasket?) or oil pan itself (one of the skid plate welds?). Either would be minor. It’s not the rear main seal which is good.

This is an honestly represented Willys. I’d like to see it go to a new home but I’m not desperate. There is no title as we don’t need them on older vehicles in Maine. Sold with Bill of Sale and a copy of the registration only. If you want to make an offer please do it in person with cash in hand, not over the phone. Delivery negotiable if seen in person and paid for in full.”

  1. Bill

I hate seeing if for sale as well. Wish I could afford it, anyone want to contribute to the Bill needs a jeep so he can continue to lead the NH trail ride fund? AkA the m38 has been retired from off road use.

  2. S. Giraud

If I can read the serial number correctly 61149, that is a 1950 model year, not a 1949 and further a mid year 1950 for the radiator is grill mounted. Nice jeep.
