    That vent is for air inlet into the heater, a feature which started about 1959. I owned this CJ3B for many years as a back up for my red 1964 and it’s either a 1962 or 1963. I never had to remove any parts so it was a complete Jeep when I sold it.

    Yes, that is a sign of an M-38A1. Also, CJ-5s have “JEEP” stamp on the sides of the cowl, while the M-38A1s do not. Finally, the M-38A1s have a glove box on the driver side dash, while CJ-5s have it on the passenger side. Those are some major differences.
