Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. What I would call, a good old fashioned deal.
Well Dave….eWillys.com got me again!
The school asked if I would teach an automotive class for their after school program. I politely declined. Apparently God has a sense of humor and has plans different from mine as this Jeep pops up on your site a couple days later for $100 dollars. I thought to myself; “restoring a old Willys Jeep would be a great project for students, but surely there is a catch” I thought about it for a week, then what the heck, its only 45 minutes away, if it is still available I should at least go look. I emailed, he still had it, now I knew there had to be a catch.
Went Sunday night to look. All the parts looked to be there and the Jeep all original. There was some rust in the normal places that will require patching, but no big dents or carnage, in fact the front fenders, hood windshield frame and grill were all immaculate minus the faded paint. But the engine had antifreeze in the oil before he pulled it. So either a cracked block or blown head gasket?
I commented that there was an engine stand in the part pile. The owner says; “you can take that too and there is a cherry picker you can have”. What could I do but pay the man? The tires were flat and asked if he had an air compressor, or should I bring small one. He pointed at a decent size tank compressor and said you can take the air compressor also. Now I’m starting to feel a little guilty and asked why he was giving such a good deal? Long story short; he is moving and doesn’t have room for this stuff at the new place in San Francisco.
The owner is genuinely a good guy. Told me of memories of riding in the Jeep with his step Dad and their adventures. The Jeep originally came from Wyoming and has been stored inside for the last 20 years. Still has the Serial #21731 Tag, So I’m guessing it is an early’ish’ CJ3A.
Then; the next day I get a text from the previous owner. He has a couple of Miller welders to sell; a Millermatic mig and a Thunderbolt stick with carts, leads and clamps for $400. It’s not the screaming deal as the Jeep, but a fair deal nonetheless. I already have a welder, but would like to return the favor as this will be a couple less things he has to deal with while moving.
So looks like there is a new automotive class starting with one 1949 Willys CJ3A, an air compressor and two welders! This should be interesting.
Well holy smokes! I’d say you were busy there. The Dualmatic hubs alone are worth at least $50, so this is one of those deals where a person can’t go wrong.
