“Up for sale is one of the more rare military Jeeps. The last of the ‘Real Steel’ CJ’s, the CJ10a. Built as one of two models of the CJ10, this one was made for the US Air Force as a flightline tow tractor, or tug. There were about 2300 or so built, thus the rarity.

All steel body including the removable hardtop. The rear body is 3/16 and 1/4 inch plate steel as part of the traction weight. Additional traction weight is a 4 1/2 thick slab of steel in a pocket on the frame above the rear axle. Curb weight is around 5500 pounds.

The engine is a Nissan 3.2l indirect injection diesel, model SD33. These are still in use in many versions from the Nissan heavy lift forklifts to fishing boats, ag pumps and generators. The one in the jeep runs very nicely (a video clip of it running is available).

Transmission is a heavy-spec TF727 with 4-planetary clutch packs. A NP208 transfer case is between the transmission and rear end (the original, NP198 locked in low t-case comes with it). The rear axle is a Dana 70-2U with a 4.88 open differential. The front axle is a Dana 44 tube axle (no differential). An empty Dana 44 front drive axle with knuckles and axles comes with it (no drive shaft). The hubs are 8 lug, disc brakes on the front and big drums on the rear axle. A set of 5 extra 16.5 rims comes with it, though the tires are mismatched.

The motor runs, the transmission shifts, the brakes work but are spongy. This is a 34 year old US Military truck. Do not expect a beauty queen, but a killer project. Before calling or emailing, PLEASE do some research on the Net about these interesting beasts. I drive one as a gas-powered daily driver, so can offer a bit of help on this project vehicle. These were never titled by the military, but bonded titles are easy to get as they DO have a VIN number. This vehicle comes with the Air Force paperwork, a CD copy of the military Operator’s, Maintenance, and Parts manuals. There are some spare parts also, prices can be discussed for serious buyers.”

    Hi Steve,

It looks like this CJ-10 had sold. Unfortunately, I don’t have any contact info for the owner.

    Thanks,
