Original Post March 2, 2020: Since I posted this, Barney has determined that this is likely a 1963 Tux Park III CJ-5. He reports the following:
“I went to my library and W-1155 particulars for the Mk III show it CJ5 only. The one for the Mk IV printed in 1964 W-1175 show availability as a 5a and 6a.”
“Here’s a classic & very scarce 8″ tall by 10” wide B&W glossy photo from a Chattanooga, Tennessee Jeep dealer advertising the John Wayne movie “Hatari” back in 1962 -Photo features a real photo image of a man (presumably a local radio DJ from WKDA radio named Eddie Kilroy) dressed in safari gear with a pith helmet and rifle seated in an open jeep with signs all over the outside of the vehicle reading: “See and Drive the new Jeep Tornado OHC Powered Bob Pearsall Motors”… “Kilroy is Here! to see Hatari! Starring John Wayne NOW Tennessee Theatre.”… “See and Drive the new Tornado OHC Powered Jeep at Bob Pearsall Motors”… “I’m Eddie Kilroy the great game player from WKDA 1240 on the dial. Follow me to Hatari! at the beautiful Tennessee Theatre”… “See Hatari! Tennessee Theatre. See Jeep Vehicles in Action! Bob Pearsall Motors”
The vehicle is parked in a downtown lot with other billboard signs all around too-The photo has some wear with a minor center crease, but still a neat dual collectible item that will display nicely! How many of these throwaway items survived? This is an ORIGINAL item, NOT A REPRODUCTION item!
It’s a Mark III. Check out all the trim details including same color windshield and steering wheel, chrome latches and steps, “J” hubcaps that I’ve spoke of before, chrome bumpers, and wide WW tires, though they usually came with GY Suburbanite white side wall. It’s an actual Tux.
Time line works also. Movie released mid-summer. 63 Tux release mid-late summer based on my special parts pages supplement. Seat covering is also Mk III with the light back (Indian Ceramic) and black seating surface (edges shown in photo). Note the advertising for the Tornado motor (in a different model Jeep).
aha … so the 63 Tux was released mid-late summer of 1962? I didn’t think of that.
I would sure like to see what the original seats looked like. Supposed to be Indian Ceramic and black.
Denny, I’m experienced in these Mk IIIs . I can tell from the photo even though B&W, that these are the Indian Ceramic trim with black mild tuck n roll seating surface as I mentioned in a previous post, the latter edge you can see in the photo. If you are wanting to see an actual seat, with your contact info I can email a photo of a mint orig.

Vernon (aka today as Art Garner), with usual calm and delicate approach, believes this to be a CJ-6A. However, we’ve already established that his photo was take prior to the CJ-6A introduction. So, it might be a CJ-6, but to me it looks too short to be a CJ-6 (not the best angle for identifying it). So, I’m still in the CJ-5 Tux Park III camp.

I’m highly disappointed in the tone of Mr. Garner’s posts while respecting everyone’s opinion on here. Our W-1155 data booklet for the Mk III show CJ5 only. No 6 or “A” model for either. The MCO and Delivery form we have for a 63 Mk III do not show the “A” designation either. However, the W-1175 booklet covering the Mk IV does show it as a CJ5A or CJ6A. Willys Motors made sure details mattered in these proprietary booklets. I think the photo creates an illusion and is not definitive as shown. Notwithstanding, considering Jeep’s propensity for special order products; and given that the CJ6 was a production vehicle in 63, I suppose it would be possible for the dealer to order a 6 as a Mk III. Possible. But not as defined by this photo alone. I appreciate this forum and all who participate. We all learn from each other and become enriched by each others knowledge and experience.
I agree the angle throws the lines a bit, but the banner skews the perspective, too. I’m looking at the lower body edge, just barely visible below the banner. To my eye, that length is short, typical of the 5. The chrome goodies and uniform paint nail it as a Tux. And just because they used a 6 in the movie, doesn’t mean a 5 won’t work as an advertising gimmick. The general public won’t split those hairs, like we would. A Tux makes sense if you’re going to try and draw the public, use the nicest looking rig you have!
ok , I magnified the image 300 times with an electron microscope , and its a cj-5a , the GUCCI tuxedo park model –but heres the real question —> what bore is that rifle ? — elephant gun ? — plus , they really should have used a stock cj-6 for this promotional — plus , as I remember , one of the cj-6’s in the movie was an export model , squared off rear wheel wells , made for the transverse rear seats — then they wrecked it ? — is red buttons still alive ?
Looks like Red Buttons died in 2006 (RIP). I will have to defer the gun question to someone more knowledgable than me (my wife for one …but she’s wandered away).

Just putting my 2 cents in, The J wheel covers were aftermarket Jeep approved made by Cutlas in 15 and 16 inch for any Jeep, a set of 4 was about $ 22 . Any wheel cover or hub cap and any white wall tire was an option on the Tuxedo Park .
