“Again with a tear in my eye, I am offering my
1949 CJ3A Jeep that I have owned for 52 years.

This was my second Jeep and my family and I
won the most active family trophy in the Phoenix
Jeep Club for several years.

But that was a long time ago, and all good things
must come to an end.

This vehicle has many modifications mostly of the
wrecking yard variety which is the way we used to do
things back in the day.

So here is my fairly honest appraisal.

The Jeep has the V6 Dauntless engine
from a 1966 CJ5.
The engine has a polished aluminum
Ofenhauser manifold with a vintage
Carter AFB 4 barrel carburetor.

I still have the original 2 barrel manifold
and carburetor somewhere.

The radiator is from a 40s or 50s flat head Ford
with 4 rows of tubes . I punched a hole in it
years ago in El Golfo but they soldered it up
and have had no problems cooling.

There is a Koenig PTO winch which is
presently not hooked up, but I have all
the parts to make it work.

It has a tow bar with rollers built in for
guiding the winch cable if you use the winch.

There is a Borg Warner overdrive which
is not working, and probably can’t be made
to work because no one knows how to work
on these any more, except maybe
Herm the overdrive guy.

The emergency brake has never worked.

Axles were changed to 4.27 many years back
and it has auto engaging Warn front hubs.

The brakes are 11 inch all the way around from
a 66 or 67 Wagoneer or Gladiator. Master cylinder
for brakes and hydraulic clutch from 57 – 66 Ford
pickup, and clutch slave cylinder is 62 Chevy pickup.

The steering gear is from a 1960 Ford Galaxy
and should last forever if you keep grease in it.

Steering shaft is from a late 60s Ford F250 to
a Chevy steering U joint and then to the Galaxy
gear.

I have tried in vain to seal all the running gear,
but it is a old Jeep and drips gear oil.

A previous owner installed a glove box in the dash.

Dash has all SW Green Line gauges except I never
installed the oil pressure gauge, but I have it.

There are two stock 8 gallon fuel tanks under the
seats with a valve to select which tank you want.

There is an electric fuel pump in addition to the
stock mechanical pump on the engine.

The grill was chromed many years ago and is still
in good shape. The valve covers were also chromed
but one is starting to peel the chrome.

Seats are from a 1965 Mustang but are now
in need of recovering.

There is a full cage roll bar that I hope you never need.

I fabricated two small storage compartments in the
rear corners, similar to what the MB models have.

Also a very vintage Whitco fabric top. I have doors for
it, not shown in photos.

The tires have pretty good tread and are on 70s vintage
chrome wheels but are quite old and should be replaced.

It has a single speed electric windshield wiper that works
slowly, so I don’t drive it in the rain.

I re-painted it a couple years ago and it looked pretty nice
but the hood and front fenders faded so I gave the whole
outside a quick re-paint. Definitely an amateur job
but it is nice and red and shiny.

So, that’s about it.
It has been sitting a lot with only an occasional
short drive, so could use a good deal of TLC.

I do have a few extra parts, but most everything
you would need is still available.

Scottsdale Rd and Camelback area.”

Another nice Willys, and a very well written ad, you have to admire this guy, parting with an old friend is not easy, but he has the courage to do what must be done. What caught my eye was the vintage Whitco top, they were always my favorite style soft top. This one mounts around the windshield frame on top, without looping over to fit in a grooved channel, new to me, but gives it a nice vintage look. Still some old guys around that apricate these old junkyard builds, count me in with the old guys who value work as enjoyment and not as material wealth.
