New to eWillys? Here is a very brief synopsis of this website: You can Contact Me with questions, comments or concerns. The image to the right is of my Jeep - Lost Biscuit. Learn more about eWillys, about Me or read the FAQs.

1. This website is dedicated to pre-1980s Jeeps &/or Willys, though it mostly focuses on flat-fenders (MBs, GPWs, CJ-2As, CJ-3As, CJ-3Bs, M-38s, DJ-3as). If you want to post something (your build, your jeep or sale, etc), you will need to contact me.

2. Most of the content on this site relates to flatties that ARE or WERE for sale on craigslist and ebay. My interest here is to help people buy & sell Jeeps & parts; to educate about 'old school' modifications and available parts; to make connections with other Willys Enthusiasts; and to entertain.

Nice DJ-3As

These are nice DJ-3As; some are modded and some are not. DJ-3A Gala Surreys are included here as well.

UPDATE:  Price dropped to $9000.

I used the IMCDb.org site to attempt to locate an image of the jeep to the right from a shot in the movies.  You can see a DJ-3A from Blue Hawaii (not a very good shot). Or the same shot enhanced and cropped to the left.  Here’s a link to a shot of the Nutty Professor’s DJ-3A.

This flat fender (the one on the right) falls into the ‘unusual jeep’ category.  Apparently, it’s a movie star!

For the condition, this looks like a good price.  There just aren’t that many DJ-3As in good condition for sale out there.

“Pretty clean 1962 Jeep flat fender, 2 wheel drive, has top, runs and is driveable. This is NOT your normal rust bucket, 99% rust free!! Please call my brother, he is the owner. Lee @ 913-915-7570

UPDATE:  Still Available

(07/26/2010) This looks in good shape.

“I have a Flat Fender Willys Jeep but registered as a 1966. It has a rebuilt Buick V6 with only about 500-600 miles on the engine. The transmission is a Chevy truck 4-speed with a granny-low and Jeep transfer case. The tires are fairly new with about 250 miles on them…all in the sand at Pismo. The top is in like new condition with no hazing on the plastic “windows” or any tears in the canvas. The front seats are in like new condition, as well. It has been kept in the garage as long as I have had it, about 4 years. The carb. has been rebuilt and the battery is new. Tags are up-to-date and good until June of 2011. I have about $5500 in it, it can be yours for only $4500 or best offer. You will turly love this off-road vehicle. If interested, call 209.823.6063.”

This looks like a solid back consistent with some DJ-3As.  I’m assuming this has been modified with 4wd?

UPDATE: Bill reports that this sold.  He believes the top may still available.

(04/29/2009) This is a very nice Dj-3A and one of only a handful made in 1961 as noted by the seller.

“1961 WILLYS DJ3A DISPATCHER JEEP, Serial Number 56337 20287, I removed the hard top with plans to paint it black and get a black vinyl bikini top made, but as you can see in some of the photos, it had original military OD paint. So I thought I would offer it just as it is in case someone wanted to go back to original OD military style with stars and numbers. ….”

UPDATE:  Colin notes below that this is probably not a DJ-3A body like I thought, due to the fuel inlet.  I have to agree, as it looks like a stock inlet.  So, someone likely filled in the back of the body.

“garage kept, restored, runs good. No need to do any work this this vintage classic, just turn the key and drive! Call 540-525-7197.”

I don’t see too many DJ-3As that still have their tops.  Someone converted this to 4wd.

“Unique Willys Jeep with a fiberglass roof and steel doors and sides.  This jeep is in good shape for the age. Willys flathead 4 cylinder runs fine, transmission and 4 wheel drive work fine. Cooper military type lug tires.  Has new front springs, new brake shoes on all 4 wheels.Fun jeep to drive.  This jeep needs a new master cylinder or rebuild.  Gas tank has seap leak if filled full.  Has some rust in the bottom of the doors. Floor pan appears pretty solid.  As you can see in the pictures there are some surface rust spots on the body.  Drivers door window is cracked. Other glass is good.  Seats from a new jeep are installed. The jeep comes with the original split bench front seat, original locking hubs, has Warne hubs installed, extra transmission and transfer case parts.  It has a tow bar installed with a 2″ hitch so you can tow it home.”

I believe this is a DJ-3A has been changed to four wheel drive, though it’s listed as a ’56 on the Ad title and a ’65 within the text of the Ad.

It’s not totally stock, but it sure looks nice for the price.

“Titled as a 1947 CJ. Ford 4cyl motor and 4 speed manual transmission. Full aluminum Meyers top and doors. Bucket seats in front, rear jumpseat, rollbar, heater. Runs great, crack in windshield glass. Fuel pump is a little weak as it loses prime if not started for a few weeks. Fun vehicle. Take the top off and flip the windshield down in the summer. 2500.00 Or best offer”

This has been available for a few weeks, but I somehow missed it.

“1962 Willys Jeep DJ-3A. This is a Dispatcher Jeep which was the same as the CJ-3A except for being two-wheel drive. Currently registered and operating. Has a Willys flathead four cylinder engine and three speed transmission. This is a good restoration project, or an excellent candidate for a Buick or Chevy V-6. Comes with a later model Dana postal Jeep rear axle (new 4.56:1 gears / center pumpkin), and postal Jeep front axle if you want to use with modern wheels and brakes. Clear Nevada title. Call Don at 775-742-5089.”

Speaking of Surreys, here’s one for sale.

“This example in the rare colors of Cerulean Blue and Glacier White is probably the best completely restored example in the world. Everything has been done to the highest standards from the paint and chrome to the bright waterproof fabric upholstery and surrey top. The underhood presentation is exceptional and no detail has been ignored. Much more practical than a Moke or Jolly with legendary Jeep reliability this is a superb and entirely practical vehicle for bright summer days at the shore lake or ranch and will vie with Bentleys and Ferraris for pride of place in valet parking lots in Hollywood the Hamptons or South Beach. $42,500″

It’s not perfect, but I haven’t seen very many Stock DJs in this condition.

“Up for auction is one of the rarest of all Jeeps.  The DJ-3A Dispatcher was made from 1955 to 1964.    Willys marketed the Dispatcher as a “Sport” vehicle and an inexpensive commercial delivery car.  They used existing tooling and in-stock CJ parts to keep the cost low.  That meant that they were trying to market a car with technology fresh from 1940!  Keep in mind this car was built just months before Ford introduced the Mustang. No wonder this is a rare Jeep!

The example being auctioned is a 1963.  The paint is original and shows only a few scratches and a few discolored spots.  There are two small rust-through spots on the rear of the body at the rear body mounting brackets. The upholstery is original and is in excellent condition.  The odometer reads a very believable 27,990 miles.  DJ-3As are two-wheel-drive with three speed transmissions and column shift.  This car has a limited slip differential!   Comfortable cruising speed is around 40 mph….”

UPDATE:  Colin reports that he purchased this Jeep and is enjoying it a lot!  Congrats! He also reports below that the original date listed by the seller as 1956 was incorrect and that it was actually a 1960 Surrey.

“Production of the 2-wheel drive Willys DJ3A model began in 1956 and continued until 1964.  The DJ3A utilized the 4 cylinder “Go Devil” engine, T90 side-shift transmission, and a Dana 23 rear end. The DJ3A surrey was marketed to resorts and as a fun beach buggy. This dj-3a gala surrey was Owned by 20th Century Fox where it was used in a few beach movies.  Annette Funicello, Frank Sanatra etc.. Sold to Pioneer Garage in 1982 where it was totally redone. down to the frame and sat on display in the pioneer jeep showroom on Washington St. in Peabody Ma. Until purchased in 5/09 to me when the dealership closed its doors forever. It runs and drives awesome, 3 speed on the column, a true collectible. I have pictures and documentation from 20th century fox showing the vehicles history there.  Also I have pictures of the jeep with Annette and Frank in the vehicle.  Mileage is around 2000 miles, although California determined it as a undetermined value amount because the gauge glass was sun faded and not readable. When you see this vehicle you will know the mileage to be true.”

On first glance this looks almost brand new.  But, on a closer look I realized someone couldn’t resist modifying it by changing the windshield.  At first, I thought the windshield was raised and attached to an added bracket; however, after looking at more pictures,  I’d say someone tried to make a CJ-3B windshield fit on it. On such a rare and good looking jeep, I can only wonder why??

“This ultra rare 5000-mile documented original 1963 Willys spent the majority of it`s life on a golf course in Florida. It is believed to be one of the few Surrey Gala models. At some point in it’s life it has had a color change and top upgrade. For the last 15 years it has been part of a private collection. It has never been offered for sale before. It is in excellent mechanical condition and presents beautifully.”
