Dean Joy “60 Days in Combat”
Gregg Stoerrie shared several stories and photos of his uncle’s time during WWII on his Facebook page.
One image shows a sketch by Dean Joy, a soldier who served with Gregg’s uncle. Dean went on to write a book, 60 Days in Combat, as well as sharing his story on youtube:
Here’s is Dean’s sketch of some jeeps during an ambush by 88mms. Dean wrote:
“Front Jeep took a direct hit, drivers headless torso still behind the wheel and other GI’s on the side. They hit the end Duce and a half. Col Wooten came running along the convoy yelling everybody off the trucks now. A few GI’s worked around to out flank the 88’s. The firing stopped as they captured the first 88 and found it was maned by kids. As they approached the other 88’s they could see the crews were dead and it was clear they were knocked out by their own guys. It was the first 88 who turned the gun on their own guys. We assumed that they knew the war was lost. Had they not it would have been a massacre.”
Gregg also shared this photo taken by his uncle of a plane that was hit by Japanese flak. Greg wrote, “This picture was taken by my uncle joe Stoerrle during the Second World War. This is the tail section of his B25 bomber. He told me a story how they barely made it back after their tail was shot up from Japanese flak. Uncle joe told me how accurate the Japanese flak was. I would like to thank my cousin Shelly (uncle Joe’s daughter) for providing me with these pictures at a family get together on 1/6/18.”
2 Combat Rims Bella Vista, AR **Status Unknown**
UPDATE: **Status Unknown** Were $450
“For Sale: two pristine 16″ two piece combat wheels. Believe these to be original, low mileage rims off of a trailer, no warping or cracks. Were powder coated yellow by previous owner. These are not repop wheels, as evidenced by the pitting normal to WWII era combat rims & the presence of the tags.
Willing to entertain serious offers, or trades for 6 x 16″ NDCC tires or correct military fuel tank for M38A1. Free delivery in the NWA area.”
Combat Rim Republic, WA **Status Unknown**
2 Combat Rims Sandpoint, ID
The headline of the ad shows a price of $100, but the two combat rims (with 2 tires) are priced at $150 and two single piece Combat-like(?) rims are $50. Thus it appears all four tires are $200???

“Wheels and tires came off a cj3a Willys.
Tires are old but hold air and roll.
Two wheels are militarily split rims, for the authentic look. Hard to find. $150 for both.
Two are riveted single piece rims.

16″ rims”
Combat Rim Concord, CA **SOLD**
2 Combat Rims Rockwell, TX $350
Some one could use these.
“A pair of original Willys Jeep 2-piece 16″ combat rims. 5×5.5 hubs (original style)
These are likely WW2 era as they came off an MB-T trailer I recently acquired. All bolts are present. Data plates are also present, but painted over.
The wheels are sound & fully intact. I pulled the trailer 60 miles on a major highway at 65mph with no issue. The rims have been painted some time in the past.
Of note: I have not tried to unbolt or separate these wheels.
The radial tires are mounted & included in the sale. The tires have 75% of tread left.
I do not want to ship these.
$350 cash for the pair of rims & tires.
I can also take Paypal if you cover the 3% fee. Less”

4 Combat Rims Waynesville, OH $400
Top rims pictured need a closer examination.
“I have 4 WWII combat wheels for a Willy MB and Ford GPW. In the first picture, the bottom two rims look goo. The top let rim has a very small amount of metal eroded away around the valve stem hole. The top right rim has holes (you can stick your fingers through) around the valve stem area (shaded area in picture)”
1942 GPW Wheeling, IL eBay
This is a project.
“Up for sale is Ford GPW 75591, DOD October 1942. I hate to sell this but I have other projects that I’d like to tackle. This project is in disassembled condition, as seen in the pictures. Everything (except the combat rims) in the pictures is included*. And there may be more items that if I can dig up I will add in. *If you choose to “buy it now” I will pull the original GPW/F marked radiator from my Slat grill and add it in, along with the 5 brand new reproduction combat rims shown in the last picture.
The original GPW parts include the GPW numbered frame, axles, springs, original tub with original data plate (though difficult to read), original fenders, hood, seats, pedal arms, pedals, and fuel tank straps. The following came with this GPW when I purchased it. I am unsure if they are original to this jeep but they are period correct: steering box and column, transfercase and parking brake. I also have information about from which Ford factory this was produced and a rather accurate original hood number range.
The parts that are not original to this jeep, but original and correct F MARKED PARTS INCLUDE the green spare hood, pintle hook, headlight buckets and arms, bullet marker lights, splash shield, bellhousing, flywheel, large bellhousing cover, T-84 transmission, transfer case arms, grill, correct SG marked radiator fan, and extra Ford Script tub.
WWII jeep correct items include the windshield, reflector bezels, NOS boxed fender blackout bulb, taillight buckets, flat-bottomed oil filter, auto-lite distributor caps, thermostat housing, oil pan, green sheller steering wheel, fuel tank, and rebuilt like-new 1944 dated fuel pump.
