Crowd Sourcing Special Equipment Dash Stickers

• CATEGORIES: Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Maury sent me this link to the earlyCJ5.com page showing several different Warn hub dash stickers. Here are the three shown from that page:

warn-hub-dash-stickers

That got me thinking that a post Special Equipment and other standard vintage dash stickers might be useful (such as hub, transfer-case, transmission, snow plow, overdrive, etc). By far, Warn seems to have been the most prolific producer of dash stickers, followed by Dualmatic.

However, during my searches, I ran into two issues. One is that I have no idea if or when transfer case stickers appeared on dashes (did the factory apply them ever or were they from dealers or from a third party)?

Secondly, I am sure I have seen stickers that I can no longer find, such a dash sticker for a Husky Overdrive. There are likely some I haven’t seen. So, I figured I’d ask readers if they have anything interesting.

So, if you have unusual stickers or decals on your jeep’s dash (or have pics to that effect), please send them to me at d@deilers.com. I’ll put together some kind of post based on them.

I’ll likely do something similar later on with data plates (rather than club or event related plates), as there are a range of them (gov plates, original data plates, remanufactured plates, etc).

Willys-Overland Equipment Book

• CATEGORIES: Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

special-equipment-book-willys-overland1

On Friday I received a Willys-Overland Equipment Book binder that I won on eBay. The book contained a few surprises, such as a 4-page Monroe brochure and a number of early Newgren brochures that rarely hit eBay. The main part of the binder, a collection of 1947 equipment brochures, appears to be as complete as I’ve seen. In addition, at the back of the book, are second-supplement 10-1-1949 brochures that are either updated versions or new brochures. It is so packed with brochures that I will need to remove some to make sure none get damaged. I ended up pay $128.50 and that proved to be a good value.

The biggest surprise was the inclusion of a note from the seller, Nancy, mentioning how this booklet came from her father. The note was thoughtful enough that I reached out to learn more about him.

special-equipment-book-willys-overland-note

I learned that Richard H. Malone was from Westport Island, Maine. He received his bachelors at the University of Pennsylvania, then served in Vietnam. After the war, he raced cars and motorcycles. He and his wife were so passionate about motorcycles that they owned Honda dealerships in Brunswick and in Portland, Maine. They were also both passionate about jeeps, owning jeeps from Willys to modern jeeps and all models in-between. Before her death, Nancy’s mother sold a “panel-sided” jeep, which I’d guess was a Willys Delivery Sedan, under the condition that the new owner had to have a garage for it! Nancy still has her mother’s 2001 Grand Cherokee.

So, as the temporary custodian for this binder, I’ll add a note to it about it belonging to Richard H. Malone, as he deserves credit for preserving this history for us.

UPDATE: Matt shared this awesome pic of a Stork FC with a plow taken at the 2019 Great Willys Picnic.

storks-blue-plow-fc

I happened upon the Stork’s Plows website the other day. The company operates out of Bernsville, Pennsylvania. It looks like they carry a wide range of replacement parts for plows and other equipment, though how many vintage parts they have for those items isn’t clear. According to the website’s history page, the company started fixing plows and has a history of jeep support. They also sell some jeep parts on eBay.

Anyone familiar with the company?

1945 Photo of MB Pulling Farm Equipment **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on ebay.

This May 1945 photo appears to show an MB (rather than a CJ-2) pulling hay rake. It’s curious that the jeep has “WILLYS” written over the rear wheel well.

“1945 Press Photo Farmer Uses A Jeep As A Tractor To Rake Hay. This is an original press photo. Jeep has a future in postwar America The versatile jeep, which has become known as the “Sweetheart of the Army,” has a future in postwar America, both as an agricultural and industrial machine. All kinds of special bodies, air compressors, and pulley attachments for postwar units can be used with the jeep. Here a farmer uses the jeep to rake hay. This in only one of the farm chores a jeep will do. Others are plowing, harrowing, disking, rolling, drilling, cultivating, reaping and binding. Photo measures 8 x 6.25 inches. Photo is dated 05-26-1945.”

Viking Hub From Viking Automotive Equipment

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

One hub I’ve never seen in the wild is the Viking Hub, a 1968 product developed by Don Chapman at the Viking Automotive Equipment in Gardena, California. Before he moved to California, Chapman was active in Colorado’s offroad community and was involved in an offroad accessories in Colorado as well, most likely Dualmatic or Husky (anyone know the relationship between the two?), which were both based in Longmont.

Here’s an ad for it. Looks like a nice hub:

Four Wheeler Magazine did an article on the product and included this exploded view: 1969-01-fourwheeler-viking-hub-exploded
