So, if you sent me an email, please resend (and if you are sending large files, please send to Thanks.

1947 CJ-2A Eatontown, NJ $18,000

Listed as a 2A, but basically a custom built jeep.

year-cj2a-nj41 year-cj2a-nj42 year-cj2a-nj43 year-cj2a-nj4

“You are looking at a Custom Jeep Willys. This Jeep has been built from the Ground up. Frame is a 1950’s cj5 willys that was stripped down and painted with all new springs, and hardware. Only thing that’s original Willys is the Frame, Hood, Fenders, and Grill. It Has a fiberglass body which has been bed lined inside and out and reinforced. This is a show stopper that gets a lot of attention! The drivetrain is a 1990 302 Mustang motor that had 90k on it before being installed. The following is all brand new when its was built: alternator, water pump, edelbrock intake, timing chain, edelbrock 650 carb, new ignition, headers, x pipe, magnaflow exhaust, radiator, starter, and much more.

Transmission is a rebuilt Ford C4 3spd with a 4500 stall converter, shift kit, and B&M hammer shifter. Jeep has manual brakes with disc in the front and drum on the rear. Steering is also manual but has brand new steering box (very easy to steer). Rear end is a Chevy 10 bolt. Jeep is Rear wheel drive only, no room for the 4wd. Fun to drive to shows and parades. Has a hidden stereo with kicker speakers front and back. Runs and drives great but could use just some tuning to make it perfect and little odds and ends. I have been driving it to shows and parades and it has been running perfect. Jeep is registered as a 1981 CJ7”

Chevy II 153 Asheville, NC $500

No pics, but this sounds like a good price if you want an upgrade over your existing engine. I’d put this in Biscuit if it weren’t so far away.

“Chevy II 153 4 cylinder from 1962/63(?). The motor has been built as a high performance engine…has a 4 bbl intake, dual point distributor, header and (I think) the big valve head. Runs great and had it in an old Jeepster but replaced it with a V6. Seem to be hard to find as a lot were scooped up and built for dirt track racing. Ran fine in the Jeepster with good oil pressure and no over heating (has new water pump).”

1951 CJ-3A Valdese, NC $3500

It’s a project.

“I have owned this 1951 Willys CJ3A since 1979. So many great memories made with this jeep and with a little TLC another generation can experience the Willys vibe. I took it apart for a frame up restore in 1981 but never got around to putting it back together (military, marriage, kids). It has the original T90 transmission with a Novak adapter bolted to a Buick Dauntless 225 V-6 (has about 60K miles on engine). Frame is solid with new leaf hangers and bushings. The tub, fenders, hood, tailgate, grill and windshield frame are in excellent shape and were sand blasted and coated with a heavy 3M primer before it was stored. This jeep has been barn stored for the past 36 years. Just needs to be reassembled and painted. Includes original backseat and added roll bar.”

Empi Dune Buggy

• CATEGORIES: Features, Unusual

UPDATE: David Crawford reports that his father built 36 different Empi’s that ended up all over the western US. In the comments below, he wrote,

“My dad, Bill Crawford, of Tuolumne, CA, “sparkplugged” the build, on those 2’VW based cars. He bought a set of plans for the EMPI Sportster, and made a whole bunch of mods. He planned to build one article, and 20 years later, there were @ 36 of them built, and running around.
Three of them went to South Dakota. A friend in the Phoenix area, over the years, took 3 of the cars from Norcal, and sold them in the Phoenix area.

Most of the cars were built in his home shop, and about 10 of the cars were assembled by students in a high school auto shop survey class that he taught. There are still several of them floating around Norcal.

Original Post June 2012:

The Empi Dune Buggy was an early metal kit for VWs. There were several styles.  According to, “The EMPI Sportster was a sheet metal buggy built on a modified VW Beetle floorpan. It was available in a two passenger model or a four passenger model. All Sportsters featured a “Deluxe Folding Windshield” and were constructed of 20-, 18-, and 12- guage steel.

Jim, who pics are shown below, wrote:

“We got the Empi running and driving the night before the Durango car show. I washed, scrubbed and entered this quality piece of early 1960s dune buggy Americana and am shocked that I didn’t win a trophy! Crazy huh? All sarcasm aside, little kids loved it, old men remembered it from “back in the day”, rat rod guys thought it cool, I was really surprised at how much attention and photos it created. Still though, no trophy? People just don’t appreciate a good old fashioned, fugly, all metal dune buggy these days, sigh…”

Jim notes that he strategically positioned himself near the only flat fenders at the show.  You can see some of his older flatties here.
