Peace Corps Jeeps

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images

in 1961, President Kennedy signed the Peace Corps Executive Order. Since then, over 1/4 million volunteers have served around the world. Given the rough conditions, especially in the early days, jeeps were a natural fit for the volunteers heading to remote areas. Folks were even trained on how to used jeeps as a part of their introduction to the Peace Corps.

There seems to have been a wide variety of jeeps used by the Peace Corps. How the jeeps were obtained isn’t clear, but at least some in 1965 were donated by Oakland Motor Sales. I imagine the military versions, like the M-170 seen below, could have been transferred to the Corps. After a few years of service, some areas of the world abandoned jeeps. For example, a deteriorating jeep fleet in Sierra Leone led to the abandonment of jeeps, at least according to this article. In another example, according to Ron Horton, who wrote a somewhat risqué look at his time in the Peace Corps, jeeps were quickly phased out in favor of bicycles, because the bikes were considered more friendly by the person who oversaw the Brazilian Peace Corps units.

Here are a few photos related to the Peace Corps and Jeeps:

This photo of a CJ-3B with a Koenig hardtop in Chile was taken around 1965:

“For your consideration a nice condition and very rare Willys m170 USMC radio truck.
This is very similar to the more common M170 ambulance but instead of outfitted with stretchers, Was used to carry radio gear. This is a particularly rare bird because it is a later production model from 1963 ….basically almost 6 years later than standard production of the m170 was stopped

I don’t know much about the history of this vehicle in the service but there are a few sources online where one could study about them and the rarity of it.

This particular unit is in nice shape and has been mildly restored from an original unrusted example.

“Very cool Willy’s Jeep all original drivetrain does not run. It looks like the cowl and windshield were grafted from a Willy’s wagon, and the steel cab is all one piece. Probably not a prototype vehicle or a relative to the CJ4, but a cool “missing link” CJ2a built with awesome craftsmanship 40+ years ago. Possibly a non-US made Jeep wagonette. Suicide doors latch. Great patina. This will be the coolest Jeep at Easter Jeep safari.”

“1970 Hurst Jeepster #1
This could be the rarest production Jeep in the world
It is not known exactly how many of these were built. Some say 100 but I think more have come out of the woodwork.
From research done, there’s no solid record of the Hurst build numbers. There is a registry and this one is the earliest number out there. This may be the one pictured in the showroom photo. I have only seen 2 Hurst Jeepsters with the blue stripe that runs side to side in front of the red stripe. Only the really early ones.
Has the luggage rack
Has the rare Hurst badges (not aftermarket). I tried to have a company rechrome all the original emblems, but they were too pitted. The hurst badges are not pot metal, so they chromed up real nice.
The hood scoop had been stolen years before I got this vehicle. The one on there currently is a reproduction and made to look old. The tach was stollen with the scoop, but the Dixco hood tach is what is put in there now.
The wheels and tires are brand new. Have about 5 miles on the tires. I drove it to a car show and back.

“I am selling my 1948 Willys CJ2A. I bought it a couple years ago as a fun toy. It was beautifully restored by the previous owner. It is definitely a great little vehicle and it gets lots of looks, thumbs up and honks (the good kind). I truly just don’t have time to drive it and can use the extra space. It’s time to move it along to someone that will actually have time to enjoy it. Everything is mechanically sound. It starts up right away and runs better than most of my other classic cars. Truly a great car to just get in and drive. I typically ran most of my local errands in it because it’s fun to tool around in and a cake walk to park. Please let me know if you have any questions, I’m definitely not an expert on these but I will help in any way I can. I’m also happy to send any specific pictures you might want. Thanks for looking!

Just paid the registration, good through October 2020
Title in hand and in my name

P.S. I will not respond to low ball offers. I’m in no rush to sell. I’m happy to continue running errands in it =)”

Longtime public servant and former WWII veteran Ken Hechler served President Harry S. Truman, held the position as West Virginia’s Secretary of State, and represented West Virginia in Congress for several terms. Early in his Secretary of State run he began using a red CJ-5 as his office. Over the years he went through 6 jeeps.

Over the years Ken wrote multiple books. His earliest was Bridge at Remagen: A Story of World War II. He went on to write additional books, articles and other works. Eventually, Carter Taylor Seaton wrote a book about him called The Rebel in the Red Jeep: Ken Hechler’s Life in West Virginia Politics. Here are a few pics:

“This jeep is a real original 1942 gpw ford military tub hood and fenders On real original civilian cj3a frame and running gear.

I just regd it. It is fully street legal but just like the original its not a freeway veh.

It has a brand new ELECTRIC Motor.
And brand new duracel batterys.

The motor puts out 77hs power.
The Orig motor only had 60hs power.

It Runs great. It’ll do about 35 And it doesnt like hills but It can be tweaked to do higher rpms or have higher torque. I just started messing with that but im slow at it because of a condition with my hands. I will change this paragraph when i have it dialed in right.

It Wheels good and does great on flat ground. I have a wheelin test hill here i can show u on. extreme hills use lower gears and it does good . It’ll do it but u have to Know your gears to get the most out of it. It takes a little getting used to.
