1947 & 1948 Articles about Sam and Julian Kipnis

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images, Old News Articles

This short article in the January 02, 1948, issue of the Arizona Post featured a photo of this father and son team to “prove” they were in WWII together. There time in WWII did not quite go as planned, but you can read that in the article at the bottom. There’s more on Sam’s life, including his time as South Tucson’s mayor, in the book: What They Saved: Pieces of a Jewish Past.

Here’s the October 03, 1947, story that led to the photo published above …. (note the next to the last paragraph is cutoff in the original article for some reason; only one line shows “Kipnis are trying to forget … “).

Kelly All-Steel Jeep Cab Brochure

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features

So … this was on eBay yesterday. I’d patiently waited to purchase it, even setting my alarm clock. However, when the day and time arrived, my phone was away from me charging. Meanwhile, I was distracted researching this book 1000page-plus cook book from 100 years ago (1920 in fact), which I found while doing some ewillys posts yesterday (I was killing time awaiting the eBay auction end).

My supportive wife was very excited when I showed her the book images, as she knows I like a good old cookbook. She started chanting, “buy it, just buy it, buy it” … but no, I couldn’t at that price. After some research, I found a free copy on the Internet Archive, but looking through 1000 pages on the IA just isn’t the same as having the real thing in my hands. Eventually, I found a MUCH less expensive copy through Amazon, which Ann purchased for me as a gift (she’s hoping I’ll cook some food from it).

By the time I returned to this eBay auction, it was exactly 2:15pm, the same time that the auction ended. My timing couldn’t have been any worse.

Oh well, at least I got a cookbook out of the deal! Here are the two images from brochure that were posted to eBay.

1955 M-38A1 Yucaipa, CA eBay

• CATEGORIES: M-38A1 • TAGS: , .

Bill shared this nice looking M-38A1. The jeep’s supposed to have only 4850 miles on it, but given the engine was likely pulled and painted (and rebuilt?) at some point, I find that claim hard to believe. Perhaps they are miles after engine rebuild? There are a few other clues that body parts were repainted as well at some point.

“1954 Jeep CJ3B. Has rebuilt F-head 4cyl. engine,(Jeep used this engine from 53′-65′), T90 3 spd. trans. Has been a restoration project that I never seem to find the time to finish,(summers are too short in Vt.!)Have replaced brake lines, shoes, wheel cylinders, also have replaced fuel tank, fuel pump, radiator, and waterpump. Rebuilt the carb, but, probably needs to be gone through again. Haven’t had running in over a year. Electrical system was converted from 6volt to 12 volt before I got it. Top is in bad shape but,new ones are still available.

Frame and body look to be original.Body is rusty, but, I’ve seen worse, many replacement body panels are available from various vendors. Needs body work to make roadworthy, but you could use it as it is in the woods. Don’t have to worry about denting a fender or scraping branches or brush like you would on a new Roxxor that you paid $18k for. Look at the patina on this ol-girl! These old Jeeps are geared so low that they are best suited for back country roads, off roading or as a utility vehicle. Simple to work on compared to newer Jeeps or SXS. No title as Vt. doesn’t title vehicles over 15 yrs. old.”

(04/27/2017) Blaine spotted this ex-fire jeep. Engine is stuck at this time.

“Clear SD title. Tires are 90% and jeep is pretty complete. Front bumper and some other odds and ends missing. The engine was stuck when I bought it so I pulled the spark plugs and put some PB blaster in the cylinders to work on freeing them up. Jeep has matching body number to vehicle data plate. Has correct military motor. Some rust in the usual places and a few small spots were cut out in the bed where a fire dept had a water tank mounted. Also have roll cage included, but not pictured. I was going to restore this back to military appearance, but honestly have too many projects so I’m selling it for what I have into it. Here is your chance to own a genuine military army jeep!”

“One day in 2013, I was talking with a buddy and he asked if I was interested in a Willys Jeep and since I was thinking about a “project” car, I said yes. Well, I got this little gem on a farm in the Hood River Valley! I call it Taz Willy and he has won several trophies at car shows! But, as happens with time, I have purchased a travel trailer and will be doing more traveling so I decided to give someone else the opportunity to have fun with Taz.

Even though he was used in the orchard as a spraying machine, and stored for quite a while, he was in good shape and all the dried mud on his underside protected him from rusting! I stripped him down to his frame and painted it with frame paint to continue his protection.

The engine has been rebuilt by Portland Engine Rebuild using the original f-head engine block. It is the 4 cylinder stock engine. Engine has 925 miles – all road miles.

The transmission is the original– 3-speed with compound low. This required only replacement of fluid. I works good.

Will Parish & Perk Perkins: Around the World in a Jeep Book

• CATEGORIES: Books, Features

Will Parish & Perk Perkins authored a book about their trip around the world in a CJ-5. Anyone familiar with it? The cheapest price I could find was priced at $49.

Abstract: Around the World in a Jeep recounts the 1975 grand plan of Orvis CEO Perk Perkins and his then college roommate, Will Parish, to drive around the world in Will’s beloved red Jeep. Over the next 20 months, Perk, Will, and their trusty Jeep crossed five oceans and seas, exploring 35 countries and covering enough road-miles to circumnavigate the earth twice. In addition to cementing their relationship as lifelong best friends, the trip also generated some 2,000 pages of journal entries, which make up the text of this remarkable volume. Illustrated by stunning full-color photographs taken by Perk, Will, and the people they encountered, this beautifully printed and bound adventure book belongs in the collection of everyone who has a yearning to explore, travel, and discover the richness our world has to offer. 12″ x 9″ hardcover

There are at least two book covers:

Willys Jeep Newspaper Ad During 1944

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features

Here’s an unusually small and succinct ad that appeared seven times in the Midland Journal out of Rising Sun, Maryland, from June 30, 1944, through October 6, 1944. I’ve yet to run across this specific ad elsewhere. I can’t tell if it’s a corporate ad or a locale, hopeful, dealer ad.

One thing to note is that in July of 1944, Willys-Overland began using apostrophes around the word Jeep like this ‘Jeep’ major magazine ads (see the 1944 Saturday Eve. Post Ads here for comparison), yet that was not done in any of the newspaper ads in the Midland Journal, as shown below. (Ed note …. Yeah, I know, not earth shattering news, but I never know when little details like this will add up to some insight).

The one shown below was in the August 11, 1944, issue of the Midland Journal:

1944-08-11-midlandjournal-willys-jeep-small-ad-lores2

This shows how small the ad was within the newspaper page.
