The seller notes this was purchased a few days ago for over $10,000. The grill and bumper aren’t original, but the rest looks solid. The paint on the dash appears a little rough.

“serial #176801 This Jeep was manufactured in by Ford February of 1944 using the Willy’s-Overland design. The vehicle has been nicely restored and wears fresh paint including “USMC / 58282” . The engine runs strong and the electrical system has been converted to 12 volt. The frame shows no evidence of being welded and seems very sound. The headlights along with the fuel, speed, amp and temperature gauges all function properly. The tires are all excellent and the vehicle comes with a spare tire, gas can, GI ammo crate, shovel and axe. It is currently registered as an antique vehicle in the state of Maine. This true classic represents one of the very first Jeeps made in the first three years of production and before a civilian version was even developed. The ultimate addition to your WWII military collection!

I bought this jeep SIGHT UNSEEN yesterday for over $10,000.00 at a gun auction in NH. I know nothing about jeeps. The description aboves comes from the auction catolog as does the pictures. Below is the auction link-PLEASE CHECK IT OUT FOR MORE PICTURES!

1944 GPW LIttle Falls, NY eBay

• CATEGORIES: GPW (Ford MB) • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  I got this confused with a 1942 GPW from Little Falls that was on eBay last week.  My bad.

“For auction is a Willys jeep. This jeep started life as a CJ2A, but was totally redone about 6 years ago to be a WW2 MB. It has the MB2A complete body and grill. This was done over exactly like an MB. It has the Willys 4 cylinder engine, but does retain the T90 CJ transmission. It is currently set up with a 12 volt battery, but does have a 6 volt wiring harness so would be easy to convert back to 6 volt should you choose.  Comes with the SCR-510 radio with antenna, and the gas operated .30 cal machine gun and mount. This gun does not fire real ammunition and cannot be made to fire ammunition. The ammo box in the bustle basket is for carrying the oxygen and propane to operate the gun. This is an older project so it is not in show room condition, but is a great jeep for a re-enactor or for driving in parades. It turns a lot of heads.”

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay

(10/23/2012) This has an unusual story.

“O.K. military personnel, here’s your chance to own an iconic piece of history. This is an authentic 1942 Military Jeep (Ford GPW); matching frame and I.D. Plate. This jeep is probably one of the numerous leftovers from World War 2, Asian theater, as it was rebuilt at the 229TH Ordnance Base Depot, Oppama Ordnance Shop (OOS), located in Japan.

I’ve been told that this was a former Japanese navy aircraft rebuild facility located in Yokohama, Japan and was converted to the 229TH Ordnance Base Depot, after the war; much of what they rebuild went to the Korean conflict. I corresponded with a soldier who was stationed there during that time period and he told me that depot rebuilds were performed at the component level; every piece removed and replaced. That may account for jeeps that we find with a mixture of GPW and MB parts on them. I’m not sure if that is when my jeep was fitted with the body tub and windshield for a recoilless rifle, but it is a recoilless rifle version although it has round buttons on the rear tool boxes which suggest it is a MB tub.

According to Fred W. Crismon’s book U.S. MILITARY WHEELED VEHICLES, recoilless rifles were first tried in April 1945 on flat fendered jeeps. It became more commonplace during the 1950’s on M38 (flat fendered) and M38A1 (curved fender) jeeps although my body tub still has the gas tank filler under the seat suggesting an earlier version. The open back of the body tub suggests to me that this tub may have been designed for use with the latter M79 mount instead of the earlier version M75A1 mount, but I don’t know.

Therefore, I can’t be sure when it was installed unless this information is part of the Ordnance Depot Job Order Number detail, and I’m not sure if that data is still available. I don’t have the recoilless rifle and mount, but they do appear for sale from time to time which would significantly increase the value of the jeep. Included with the jeep is an authentic tow bar and 1951 Dunbar trailer. I’ve been told that the trailer is a typical companion of a recoilless rifle for carrying ammo and ancillary items for operating the rifle.

Somehow the jeep ended up in the Greek Army and was then imported to the USA. This I believe to be true because we found Greek coins inside the tub. The jeep is drivable and I used it mostly for running errands. I’ve taken it to a couple of car shows and it cruises at 60 mph with no shake or shimmy. Every time I drive it people beep their horns, wave, crowd around it, and want to talk about it – really a lot of fun.

(01/08/2012) At least the seller acknowledges it isn’t all original.

“This is rare, most left the USA never to return.
It runs, shifts and stops, I have driven it in parades the last few years. It has been covert-ed to 12 volts and has a few other minor mods but for the most part it is stock and un-restored.
Body and frame numbers are gpw and match, engine is also gpw #’s, ID tag date is January 1944, original and unmodified body (except windshield) with very little rust. also have Pentagon manufacturing hardtop that goes with it. The trans, transfer-case and axles look original for the year.”

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was  on eBay

(05/18/2012) Nice looking jeep though.  There is another rolling chassis behind it, too.

“I have known this jeep since 1971. High school friend of mine drove it when we worked at Kroger’s (1971-1974), he drove it to High School. I rode in this Jeep many times when I was younger. His family owned it from the late 1950’s until my Dad bought it around 1998-2001. Body, motor and all major parts are original to this jeep. My friend’s dad bought it from the WV Dept of Highways Surplus sale in the late 1950’s-early 1960’s and used it on his farm. When he bought it, “Corry Naval Base” was stenciled on the cowl, this is how it was when the State of WV received it after the war. I believe this Naval Base is in Florida(Pensacola I believe). I have receipts of paint and body work alone, that total over $16,000…not counting other work, that was done to the jeep.”

“I have a WW2 1942 Ford GPW for sale. The overall condition is good but this is a restoration vehicle not a turn key. The engine and most other components were rebuilt last year and it was running until recently when the distributor failed. There is a new distributor include with the vehicle and all that remains is for the timing to be set. The vehicle comes with 2 combat rims, a brand new grill, original gauges, and several other restorable parts. There are small spots of rust but nothing that compromises the integrity of the vehicle.

This has a MB block with a GPW head.  It has no title.

“Take a look at this beautiful 1945 Ford GPW, serial number 247613, date of delivery January 1945. This jeep has undergone a frame off restoration and is perfect for parades, re-inactors, and collectors. This started out as a hunting camp jeep rescued from a camp in Gettysburg Pennsylvania two years ago.

It underwent a frame off restoration done by me over the past several months. I have owned over 24 jeeps and have restored about 17 of them, several MB’s, GPW’s and CJ’s have sold successfully on e-Bay.

The frame was in good shape but needed new front frame horns. It had the wrong body on it and the previous owner put in a civilian flat head L-head engine. The body and that engine were removed and a professionally rebuilt MB engine with a GPW head was put into this jeep as well as a new reproduction DL Bensinger Body.

Everything has been gone through on this jeep and everything has been cleaned, repainted, or replaced with new, NOS, or repro parts.

Chassis and Drive Train: All original GPW drive train except the engine block. Tranny, transfer case, axles, leaf springs front and rear – original F-marked GPW. New/rebuilt shackles, new shocks, new axle bumpers, frame stripped and sand blasted repaired front frame horns including gussets, and bumper – the frame horns repaired/welded to repair some 60 years of wear and tear.

Drive train has new u-joints, new clutch, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing, new seals and bearings on tranny and transfer case which were drained and cleaned repainted, and all fluids and gaskets replaced, rebuilt band type e-brake new hardware and band, and cable, new engine/tranny mounts, new brakes including all lines and hoses, new master cylinder, four new wheel cylinders. Rebuilt steering box and drag link with original re-painted steering wheel. New rear bumperettes, original F-marked pintle hook. 4 new 6×16 6 Ply NDT tires on excellent blasted and repainted combat rims. Spare is a few years older NDT on excellent combat rim.

Engine: An original MB engine that was rebuilt by PROMAR engine rebuilders was put into this jeep. Professionally rebuilt W-O carburetor, new fuel pump, rebuilt manifolds and new gaskets, new 12 volt alternator, new coil, new wiring, new battery, new hoses, new belts, new 180 degree t-stat, new temp. gauge, new ammeter, new fuel gauge and sender, new fuel lines, new plugs and wires. Professionally repaired radiator and new cap.

Body: Bensinger MD Juan GPW body kit; new tub, fenders, grille, windshield including new glass, hood, seats, new fuel tank, new top bows, brackets and hardware, new canvas seats and top (Canvas is Beachwood Canvas), repro. shovel and axe, original 1945 dated gas can, repro. water bucket, rebuilt authentic blackout lights, new headlights and tail-lights, repro data plates.

Misc: All new modern electric, all cloth covered wires, all new gauges, all lights, all new switches work properly. Wiring harness and switches modified to work for regular driving and parades and re-inacting – not for 1940’s war conditions.

Vehicle does not have a title. Mileage is not accurate, new speedometer.”

1942 GPW **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: GPW (Ford MB) • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** at auction for $37,440

“Chassis no. 37594

Although forever associated with Willys-Overland, the original Jeep military vehicle was developed by American Bantam, formerly American Austin. Designed to meet the US Army’s requirement for a rugged, go-anywhere, four-wheel-drive vehicle capable of surviving on the barest minimum of unskilled maintenance, Bantam’s prototype Jeep was up and running by 1940, meeting the US Army’s requirements apart from the engine, which was deemed insufficiently powerful. The Pentagon, though, doubted Bantam’s ability to meet the military’s post-Pearl Harbor demands so the major contracts went to Willys – the only other firm that had submitted a tender – and the Ford Motor Company, which would be responsible for the Jeep’s trademark slotted radiator grille.

Willys made various modifications to take advantage of a revised maximum weight requirement, which meant it was able to use its relatively heavy but adequately powerful ‘Go Devil’ engine. It was in this revised form that the Jeep would enter volume production. Willys-Overland’s final production version was the Model MB, Ford’s being designated the Model GPW.

There were subtle differences between the two versions, Ford’s having its components marked with the letter ‘F’. After extensive field testing, the Jeep’s off-road capability was first publicly demonstrated early in 1941 when one was driven up the steps of the United States Capitol by Willys’s test driver, Irving ‘Red’ Haussman. Produced by the million, the ubiquitous Jeep saw service in every theater of the Second World War and continued in military service with armies world-wide for several decades thereafter. Today the Jeep remains highly sought after by discerning military vehicle enthusiasts.

This fully equipped GPW was the recipient of a frame-off restoration and has traveled only 750 miles since. Finished in USMC drab green with Navy/USMC markings, its has everything one could possibly need to storm Omaha, or East Hampton, beach. If the cell service is poor, fear not as a full radio, with microphone, speaker, headphones, antenna, and storage bag is installed on the driver side gunnel. When the going gets rough (or it cools off in the evening and a fire pit is needed), just grab the axe, shovel, rope, and jack stand to get the job done. And should an opposing group require some extra convincing, one need only point out the presence of the M31C machine gun mount with M1919A4 cradle or the M1 Garand (stock only, though) stowed in its leather scabbard along the windscreen.”
