Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. Brett found another interesting deal in Utah. The seller labels this a 1952, but it looks like a VEC CJ-2A to me. It looks like it was also a column shift at some point.

This needs some work, but looks pretty good. It also looks like it has been stretched a bit in the front of the body and the front axles looks forward a bit too, suggesting this isn’t a standard frame. Maybe it’s a truck or CJ-7 frame?

It has a chevy 4.3 v6, power steering, duel exhaust, 31×10.50 mud tires with 95% tread, trailer hitch, 3 speed manual trans, and 2 stick transfer case. This Jeep has been put up for several years and could use some work. Here’s what I know it needs: The front diff needs new spider gears ($100.00 from 4wd.com), could use the right rear brake drum replaced, and needs a tune-up. “CJ2 jeep 1946, this is a builder the engine is in the back, see photo. I think the engine has been rebuilt. I took off the valve or tappet cover and it is clean inside. The outside of the block is also clean.”
UPDATE: Mike notes the general consensus on this VEC is that maybe only the frame and running gear is from the ’45.
With a serial number of 10,077, this is an early CJ-2A. Unfortunately, it appears someone spray painted this wildly. Interestingly, it is missing the tool indents.
“This Jeep is the 77th Civilian Jeep manufactured by Willy’s and includes a ” 3 Point Hitch ” for the Farmers of America. The engine is a “Flat Head 4 cylinder that runs good ….no smoke”. The shift for this jeep is a 3 speed on the column. The tires are new and are mounted on original solid Jeep rims. The brakes have been worked on. There has been some body work and the Jeep was painted recently. Mechanically the Jeep is in good condition but will require some tinkering (TLC)….”

The good news is it runs. No title.
“Bought as a project last year, but don’t have the time for it. It was running, but the battery is weak, pushed it to start it. It is all original, but missing the windshield, oil bath air cleaner and gas tank. The body is in fair condition for the age. The floor pan either needs to be replaced or extensive work on the drivers side. I do not have the title, this jeep sat on a deer lease for a number of years. I paid $800 for the jeep last year, but am open to offers including possible trades for ???? Must get rid of soon.”

(01/12/10) This CJ-2A has a few interesting features. One is the spare tire holder, which uses a strategy I’m considering for my build. Also, this jeep runs the treadwright retread tires.
“1949 CJ2A – Excellent (not perfect) condition. Has been redone from the ground up. A must see. Starts, runs, steers, brakes. Many features including a Warn overdrive, Tulsa Ramsey winch (electric), Saginaw steering, 12 volt electric system with alternator and modern lights. I have used it – it is not a garage decoration. Engine was torn down, did not need rebuilt/bored…and was filled with new parts. Transmission and Transfer case have been rebuilt. Has a dual master cylinder. Parking brake works.”

(10/06/09) I don’t anything to indicate this is a ’45 or a VEC. It appears the body is a replacement body. It appears in good shape.

This looks like a good price on a nicely updated CJ-2A.
“47 Jeep Flat Fender with 350 fuel injected chev with T465 4sp and 205 transfer case. Detroit lockers front nd rear, marlin crawler alloy front axles, 35X12.5 tires (50%), power steering and brakes, Chev tilt wheel w/working turn sigs, amfmcd, tow bar, Best top & bimini top, 8000# Warn winch, aluminum radiator, heater & more. (05/10/09) This jeep looks good. It appears to have an updated motor of some type as I think I see a header coming down on the passenger side. It doesn’t look like there’s a muffler attached to the header.
“I have been storing my fathers 1946 Willys hoping to one day restore it in his memory. Unfortunately, with the present economy I am not working and can’t afford the extra storage fee. It was last restored in 1989 so is in need of a facelift. It has a 350 small block with headers and custom built roll bar. If your a jeep lover you will be familiar with the Armstrong tires that it rolls on and the Warn wench that it has up front. Currentley, it is non-op and needs alittle TLC. It is very hard part with this vehicle so serious inquires only.”

It’s not clean, but appears solid.
“1946 Willys. #47677. Mechanically original. Very straight & solid body. Adjustable seats in good condition. Original L head motor. Ran when parked quite a while ago. Always stored in doors. Excellent for restoration or building a classic rock crawler. ”
Here’s an early CJ-2A.
“1945 CJ2A – Only 1800 CJ2A’s were made in 1945. Has tool indent on driver side. Has tube front cross member. Serial # 11495. Runs and drives. All lights work. Transmission has been rebuilt. Brakes have been converted to 11″. Original 134 Flathead – smokes. Floor has been replaced with new metal in rear. Includes hand wench with crank.
