Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. The seller says the winch is a PTO, but that looks like a Warn winch to me? Looks like some rust in the steps.

That roll bar just isn’t working for me. I’m a sucker for the old slot aluminum rims, as many of you know.

I suspect this seller won’t get any bids with a starting price of $2900. The jeep appears pretty stock, but pictures reveal this jeep is a bit rough.
“THIS AUCTION IS FOR ONE 1950 WILLYS CJ 3A JEEP. I HAVE OWNED THIS JEEP SINCE 1976 AND AM THE SECOND OWNER. THE MOTOR WAS REBUILT IN 1975 JUST BEFORE I BOUGHT IT. IT HAS A NEW BLOCK. IT HAS THE ORIGINAL FLAT HEAD 4 CYLINDER. EVERYTHING IS ORIGINAL EXCEPT FOR THESE THINGS. I CHANGED OUT THE HUBS WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT IT. THEY ARE WARN TURN IN/OUT TYPE HUBS. “his is a 3-speed manual transmission 4-wheel drive Willys Jeep. It has a 4 cylinder flat head engine. It has power steering with tilt wheel. It has a radio with cassette player. All lights work, including signals. It has seatbelts. Brakes are good. The tires are 31 X 10.50 – 15, all-terrain, with chrome rims. It has a roll bar & the windshield FOLDS DOWN (see photos). There are chrome steps. also a new steel body. Vehicle has been completely restored, & drives good. Jeep has about 1000 miles since restoring. The jeep has a minor oil leak. No warranty or delivery. Vehicle is located in Pineville, Louisiana. “
UPDATE: Price dropped to $2800. This is a pretty good price I think.
There have been a few minor updates, however it sure looks nicely stock. It would probably restore very nicely.
“1951 jeep willys cj-3a, all original except converted to 12 volt(still have 6 volt generator), and tires and rims. Have soft top from kayline, but needs to have a windshield mount made. runs good and 4×4 works good too. new radiator, windshield, and battery(but needs to be mounted). will need new guages, the speedo and oil pressure guage work though.”
It’s only $1500, it runs and sounds pretty stock. Might be a good value.

This might not be a bad price. It’s worth a look if the body is in as good of shape as advertised. For Northern Exposure fans, Roslyn, Wa, was the real setting for the fictional city of Cicely, Alaska. (Here’s some filming locations)
“This jeep has been used summers at our cabin in Roslyn, put in covered storage in winters. Has newer F head 4 cylinder, rebuilt rearend and brakes, rewired, new battery, tow bar, bikini top, original skinny rims and weathered tires. Runs well, easy to drive, 4 wheel drive shifts and works perfect. Over all good shape, but not perfect by any means, no body rust through at all, some minor cosmetic body rust on the side but that is all. Worked perfect for us going to the beach, exploring gravel roads etc, a ton of fun for the money. Jeep is in Roslyn, can be arranged to be seen most weekends, could be brought to the West side for the right buyer and a deposit.”
UPDATE: The price on this was $1500 a few days ago, but now the price has doubled to $3000. More pictures provided as well.

This CJ-3A has a pretty crazy tailpipe. It might have some value, especially if it has an overdrive.
“1949? Jeep Willys overland cj3a, was running and driving last fall, parked for winter and the starter doesn’t engage and the brake pedel froze up. Will need complete restoration but has original seats with covers, a rare aftermarket hardtop from the 50’s, meyer plow blade with western hydraulics( one hydraulic cylinder is bad) and original equipment hydraulic engine driven plow pump. In Muskego Wi 53150 must sell soon–no title it was bought at a government surplus auction many years ago”

“This 3A is almost done. It is not a complete restoration but a nice little Willys for parades or driving around town. I was going to put a set of NDCC tires on it and let it be but I have decided I have to many other projects so this one is going up for sale. I’ve had the Jeep since last August. I’ve put a new battery in it, plugs, wires, cap & rotor button, new front brake lines, new shocks, gas pedal, & headlights. It does still need the exhaust finished, a rear brake line and a wire replaced between the amp gauge and the key switch. I drive it around every once and a while just to keep it in running order. The electrical system is still 6V. Feel free to email me or call me with any questions.”

This CJ-3A looks in decent condition. Strangely, it’s got both passenger and driver side spare tire holders.
“Lost my deer lease, selling my 49 Willys Jeep CJ3A, only 235 miles on new (not rebuilt) transmission/transfer case, new drive shafts, new front axle, new fuel tank, steering parts, Solex carburetor, OEM Jeep seat frames/cushions, 12 volt system, professionally rebuilt rear axle, tow bar, bikini top, rebuildable transmission/transfer case included. Excellent deer lease jeep, starts and runs good, very dependable.”

It’s a nice looking jeep. Note that it has a M-38 body, so maybe this is a M-38 or maybe it’s just a M-38 on a CJ-3A drive train.

Despite the seller’s assurances, I’m quite sure this isn’t a CJ-3B, lol. It appears in good shape though.
“1951 Willys model CJ3B odometer says 55566 it is probably correct, but we could not verify the actual mileage. Runs great looks great… a real head turner, Military look, could use minor interior detailing and reconditioning but is a complete working CJ3B and fine example for a vehicle of this age. This jeep sports a fiberglass body.
“Had Frame Off Resto in 2006. Nice fiberglass tub painted with bed liner. Ford 302, runs great! Has power steering. Led tail lights. Drives well and more importantly has brakes! Newer 31 pro comps. Update: Well, not so fast. I thought this was sold on eBay, but the deal must have fallen through. Now it’s back on eBay.
This appeared to sell on ebay for $9100 last month. The seller was asking $7500 on craigslist.
Restored CJ-3A with a few upgrades plus a Bantam trailer.
“1952 CJ2A & bantam jeep trailer. completly gone thru in 2004 jeep & trailer/new paint/new seats/new aluminum rims&tires/12 volts/also has back seat & 10″ x 2″ brakes. jeep & trailer both match in color/tires & rims.”
This is an interesting jeep with a variety of upgrades, including a ’45 (MB?) body on a 70’s CJ frame and running gear. Someone knew what they were doing. Given the upgrades, this price would be hard to beat if you had to built it yourself. I hadn’t heard of the Hyrdrovac brake system.

One of the more interesting early modifications for water fording is visible in the picture below. Note how the jeep facing the reader has the exhaust vented out the front of the grill with the muffler laying parrallel to the grille. I can’t say I’d ever seen that before.
The CJ-3A.info page notes: “The recommended maximum fording depth of an unmodified jeep was 21 inches. That is about the height of the fuel pump and transfer case vents. Any deeper and things would start to fill up with water. Even at this relatively shallow depth the Technical Manual (2) advised that the generator brace should be “pulled up to release tension on the fan belt and stop the fan from throwing water over the engine”. That would be important in order to keep water off the ignition system. During a combat landing the 21″ maximum fording depth was not adequate.”

The body looks like it’s seen some good work. The grille lights are unique.

“PROJECT JEEP : This 51 Willy’s jeep has a great running chasis and lots of new parts in boxes, including a new wiring harness. The motor is a 283 built .030 over and will start with a battery and some gas. Has power steering box already hooked up and 2 steering columns . All running gear has been gone through including axels and tranfercase and ROCK CRUSHERS TRANS .LOTS OF PARTS NEED to sell ASAP moving . This jeep looks rough. The front clip appears to be tilting down a bit. The wheels looks good.

Yeah, the body isn’t a pretty picture. But, the drive train sounds like it might have potential.
“A 1951 Willys jeep no title runs like a champ comes with 3 sets of tires and wheels all kinds of spare parts including heads axle shafts axle housings engine block… actualy 1 or 2 enginges that were stripped down the frame is straight and it is solid!! the body on the other hand has seen better days as far as i know it was last on the road in 1972 and been sitting behind a barn until a few years ago when the guy i bought it from got it running and used it to plow his driveway…the jeep came with the house he bought”
