Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. (08/05/2011) “I have a 1953 Jeep Willys CJ3B. This vehicle has many new parts and could be a great cruiser. I am either going to part this vehicle out or sell it. I would obviously prefer to sell it. This jeep has a 305 sbc with a fresh rebuilt turbo 400 with a brand new Locar shifter. the jeep also has a Brand new painless wiring harness, front and rear oem style seats, Flaming river tilt steering column and other parts I am sure I am forgetting. Jeep also has a rebuilt amc 20 rear axel. The jeep has been floating around my family for the last 10 years or so. I am just getting tired of the project so it is time to go. I have a clear title. The jeep needs a little attention to drive it. First serious person will have big impact over whether I part or sell this jeep. (03/19/2011) This looks like a real nice Mitsubishi, but the description had me scratching my head Now, I’m no expert on Mitsubishi jeeps, but I’m pretty sure there are some inaccuracies in the description. As a side note, here are a variety of Mitsubishi Jeep brochures that I found.
For example, ‘Diesel engine means long life, biofuel or runs on French fry oil’ — sure, a diesel ‘can’ run on vegetable oil, but it does require some non-trivial modifications.
Or ‘This is an Mitsubishi produced M38A1’ — this is not an exact version of the M-38a1 (not even close). Instead, this appears to be a J-54.
Or even ‘It has High/Low 4×4 & 4×2 Tranny & Transfer case. (3 levers)’ — unclear how it has a 3rd, separate lever for the transfercase when the first two levers represent the entirety of the transfer case. Below is the description:

Mitsubishi bought the rights to produce the exact Military version M38A1 Jeeps back post WW II They continued production until 1990
There are identical other than some major improvements.
Differences are Mitsubishi installed there 2760cc 4 cylinder Diesel Engine & put in a 4 speed transmission.
It has High/Low 4×4 & 4×2 Tranny & Transfer case. (3 levers)
Has a posi-trac rear end.
Fuel economy is exceptional. (Approx. 25-30 MPG 2×2) (In 4×4 & extreme conditions less)
Pre-Heat standard , WE were starting it this winter during the ice & snow when it was 0’ outside & the windchills at 15 below.
24v system. Dual batteries
They are right hand drive. (Can be converted) Other than engine, tranny & related most other parts interchange. Tops & other accessories are available new today. We carry a full line of service & replacement parts in our inventory.
This Jeep is equipped with a 3″ lift, free flow exhaust, 32″ tires, aluminum mag wheels, bucket wrap around contour seats,
Chrome Bull Bar,. Bikini Top, Roll bar .
We have been completely thru this Jeep & found it to be in excellent mechanical condition. With No Rust.
The engine will out perform even a 6 cylinder & even V-8’s in most any terrain, …. “well other than flat out”
It has a throttle set for climbing the steepest grades with ease & no bouncing accelerator pedal.
Diesel engine means long life, biofuel or runs on French fry oil dependability & less braking desending the steepest of grades.
Willys required there Logo to be on all of them. Other than the Engine & Tranny you cannot tell them apart.
These will last past your Grandchildren.
They will simply out perform any Jeep you are currently familiar with Off-Road. I have had 24 of these over the years & everyone that got one of them just loves them you will to I am sure.
I sold most of them between $8000 & $10000.

Is that a stock drain coming out of the gas cap? I’ve never notice that on any other jeep.
“For your consideration, a Nice Willys 1953 CJ-3B, registered, in great running condition. Recently outside was painted up in Korean war military olive green. The Four cylinder F-head engine with 3 speed transmission has recently been Rebuilt with new pistons, rings, bearings, head milled,etc..(have reciepts). Original Carter Carburetor has been rebuilt too. Steering is tight, brakes work fine…Warn locking hubs installed.
Has original factory Jeep metal cab with fiberglass roof, and sliding doors installed. (all removable)..
Tires are excellent condition mud snow type.. All head and signal lights work…Overall a good jeep to restore to perfection, or just use as is for driving, plowing..etc. Please note, there are a couple sheet metal repairs in the front floor, and body rear, but nothing structural. Shows 48k miles on working speedo..”

At the Bantam Festival Gerald took a picture of a CJ-3A(?) with an unusual Bezel. Steve contacted me today with a similar Bezel on his CJ-3B. So far, no one has produced any history regarding these. Anyone know anything about them?

“Here is a 1954 CJ3B in running condition . All original with 134 F-Head. Full aluminum cab and doors, complete snow plow assembly included. Jeep starts and drives,and has good oil pressure but will need brake work to make it road worthy. Frame is very solid with very minor surface rust, even the rear crossmember is solid. Grill, hood, windshield frame, fenders, and tailgate are all solid and in good shape. Body tub has been patched with metal and some bondo, here and there. Clear title and current registration.
