Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. UPDATE: Thanks to Roger Martin for taking some pics at this auction. It looks like there were plenty of bidders on the jeeps. Roger reports there were nine jeeps auctioned. The prices varied from $380 to $2000. The green jeep below was won with a $2000 bid (which included an extra running engine!). 3 of the Jeeps had PTOs.

“Willys Jeep, first year for the CJ-5. Needs some work, but runs and drives. The body is pretty beat up, but the drivetrain is solid. All stock drivetrain, 4 cylinder "Hurricane" F-head and 3 speed transmission. I bought it as a project, but haven’t had much time to work on it. Now I’m moving in a few months and don’t want to take it with me. Since I’ve had it, I’ve installed Warn locking hubs, replaced the rear springs, a couple of U-joints, the fuel tank, and gauge cluster. The rear seat isn’t currently bolted down, but all the hardware is there. I believe it was restored at some point in the past, but the guy I bought it from beat the body up pretty bad off-roading it. Come take it for a test drive and make an offer”

The stripes are consistent with a 71/72, but an original 73 ought to have a different stripe style, shouldn’t it? Maybe it is a 72 titled as a 73? “This 1978 Jeep CJ-5 was acquired by the seller in 2014 and subsequently fitted with a 258ci inline-six and refinished in red. Additional work is said to have included a rebuild of the three-speed manual transmission, an overhaul of the axle and transfer case components, and a refresh of the braking components. Additional equipment includes 15” wheels, 31” tires, front disc brakes, Bilstein shocks, front bucket seats trimmed in black cloth upholstery, three-point front seatbelts, and rear lap belts. This CJ-5 is now offered with parts receipts, an owner’s manual, and a clean Michigan title in the seller’s name.”
Bill spotted this one. It appears to have a 1955 or 1956 CJ-5 chassis (reversed front springs and has a PTO bar setup in the back), but with an M-38A1 body (though the grille is CJ).

It is equipped with a black soft top and doors, along with a roll bar, a Badlands winch, a spare tire carrier, a Hi-Lift jack, 16″ steel wheels, Warn manually locking front hubs, and a K&N air filter. The truck was acquired by the seller in November 2021, and subsequent work reportedly included rebuilding the cylinders heads and a valve job in addition to a refresh of the steering system and replacement of the water pump, fuel pump, and carburetor. “This is a 1956 willys Jeep. Civilian variant of the M38A1 military Jeep. It’s a southern Jeep with a TN title. No mileage on the title because it’s exempt. The cluster has 8k on it. Car starts up runs and drives. Just tuned up with a new carburetor. Tub is steel and is mint with no rust. Frame is also immaculate and had been completely under coated. We have been using it as a beach cruiser. Car has a little Bimini top for the summer. Powered by the original 4cyl. 134cid/70hp 1bbl. Front axle is a Dana 25 and the rear axle is a Dana 44. Tranny is a T90 3 speed. Not trying to field a million questions come look at it. Cash in hand for a ride. Needs some love but not much”

“Not a wrangler but I had to pick something Two(2) Willys 1st is a 1956 with title. Runs and drives 4×4 works. I bought it with a 1952 motor in it. Put a new clutch in it and have drove it around the farm. Have the motor that came out of it on an engine stand just the way I bought it. He said it ran but was making noise so he swapped it for the 52. 2nd Willys I believe is a 1953. Motor was set up . I tore it apart to rebuild but the block had been cracked so I did not bother. Body is poor. No title. $4000 Take it all. I lost interest .”

“This is an original 1971 CJ5 jeep with a solid, no rust steel body. It has the rare dauntless oddfire V6 engine that runs great. Pictures with a storage box but it comes with the back seat. Started adding some things but we just don’t have the time to enjoy it. Replaced the headlights and taillights with led, but I still have the originals. Added nerf bars for easier in and out. This jeep is in excellent shape and solid. A great classic to have. You don’t see them like this anymore. Asking 8,000”
