Fire Jeep Tanker Instructions and Specs

Mark found this jewel of a PDF at Roscommonequipment.com. We’ve seen a few of these fire jeeps for sale over the years. This document provides some insights into how the pumps work and the type of modifications that were added. The document contains instructions, specifications and detailed drawings.

1944 “Back the Attack” Envelope by Goff SOLD

UPDATE: I just picked this one up for $12.95 on eBay tonight. This is part of a series of “Back The Attack” Envelopes with different images. I’m still trying to determine what Goff’s full name was.

During WWII there were 8 different Public War Loan Drives. For the third War Loan Drive, or War Bond Drive, the Treasury department selected the theme “Back the Attack — Buy War Bonds.” The goal of the bond drive was to raise fifteen billion dollars.

This sold on eBay in January 2014 for $50.

1946 Guide Map to Tokyo

Sales Aides from the Product Merchandising Manual

A seller on eBay broke up a Product Merchandising Manual and sold it in pieces. I bought this section (Sales Aides), and several others. Unfortunately, I don’t have the resources to buy all of them (and some of them are overpriced in my opinion).

These three pages demonstrate items used by the sales team to sell Willys Vehicles. One of these aides I’ve never run across is the “Civil Defense Brochure” shown on Page 2 under Selective Marketing Booklets.

Market Research from the Product Merchandising Manual

This Market Research section of the Product Merchandising Manual is very interesting, particularly since it covers Washington State (where I live). Because some of the information is broken down by county, and because varies quite a bit, especially east and west of the Cascade Mountains, it’s likely possible to draw some national conclusions about vehicle ownership percentages, etc.

Container of 1940s Letters on eBay

“Interesting Lot of WWII era LETTERS –

some might be considered somewhat rare and/or unusual.

Lot of WWII letters that had belonged to my father-in-law, who served in the Army Air Force from 1943-1946.
He was trained as a photographer, trained at several bases and also stationed at the Stars and Stripes office in Erlangen, Germany.

I believe I counted over 240 letters in this lot.
There could be more than one letter in one envelope I noticed…
The bulk of the letters are from my father-in-law to his girlfriend, who later became his wife. Some are from her to him, a few are to and from their parents, one or two from her siblings to Ed when he was stationed away.

Brian forwarded an ad for a Supercharger. It is $900. I don’t if it is a VS-57 or not though.

1945/1946 Willys CJ-2A Booklet

I got a chance to scan “The Universal Jeep”, a thirty-two page booklet published by Willys Overland. It was published by Willys-Overland to educate consumers (and dealers?) about the differences between the ‘war’ jeep and the CJ-2A. One of the sections provides some interesting details about the testing done with the CJ-2s. I’ve included that section below.

1946 How Light is Light Pamphlet on eBay

Steve pointed out this engineering report from Willys Overland.

“original SAE engineering report , 8.5 x 11 , 12 pages , last two pages are torn with small piece of paper missing at edge , this report was presented by Willys Overland in January 1946 and describes light cars in the US and compares various light cars . The Jeep was not mentioned but it was the only “light car” being produced by Willys Overland at this time .”

1948 Letter Indicating Metal Shortages

1961 Auto Show — A Black & Gold Willys Showcase

Originally published December 25, 2009: Bruce provided me with these fascinating documents regarding the October 15-23, 1960, auto show. There are two interesting aspects to this press release:

1. Eight Jeep vehicles were to be specially painted gold with black trim and upholstery and would be displayed in a Chinese waterfront setting;
2. The vehicles were part of the advertising program of a new fall television series called “Hong Kong“.

Bantam Testimony about the Jeep Origin

Gerad found this fascinating bit of testimony from Bantam about how the company and the Army worked together. This seems particularly appropriate given the upcoming Bantam Festival.

Gerald writes,”A few years back I went to the Henry Ford Archives Library in Detroit to research the Jeep. I found this document. It is cool. It was hand typed and the original, Henry read it himself. The research librarian shook me down, I showed him I knew my shit, then he showed me the good stuff. The Le Croix collection. I used white gloves and all. Anyways. Good Bantam history for the record. This is Bantam’s testimony of what went down.”

Service Bulletin: Serial Numbers from 1951-1956

I feel very fortunate to have received a variety of old documents, newspaper clippings, and images from the 40s and 50s courtesy of a reader named Bruce. I’ve been digging through and organizing the information. Hopefully, readers will find them useful and interesting!

For example, here’s a electronic version of a 1956 Service Bulletin that explains how the serial numbering system works on vehicles built from Willys built between 1951-1954. I’ve got roughly 30 or more old service bulletin’s I’ll be sharing for the next few months. In this case, I have posted an image of the first page below. MB & GPW Standard Nomenclature List from Archive.org

I have no idea if this is of any use to anyone, but I thought it was interesting. Here’s a the link to download a 200+ government document that lists THE STANDARD NOMENCLATURE LIST of Spare Parts and Equipment as of January 1944 for GPW & MBs. Sections of the document include: Maintenance Parts Procurement List (Section 2); Vehicular Spare Parts and Equipment List (Section 3); Organizational Spare Parts and Equipment List (Section 4); Ordnance Maintenance Unit Stockage List (Section 5); Depot Stockage List (Section 6); Geographical or Seasonal Maintenance Parts List (Section 7); and Indexes (Seciion 8).

Another document highlights the OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF GPWS & MBs from 1944.

I found this and some other documents related to GPWs, MBs, M-38s and M-38A1s at Archive.org, a website that stores all kinds of information as a digital library and public resource (the site has movies, images, books, and more).
