• CATEGORIES: Event, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Bill, from Lime Street Carriages, posted some pics of last weekend’s 2o12 Willys Picnic on his Face book page.  He wrote, “I think there were 76-77 Jeeps there this year and the weather was great (hot).  My group took 6 Jeeps up from Lancaster (68 mi each way) and next year we’ll have more!

46 VECJ-2A
46 CJ-2A unrestored
46 CJ-2A newly restored
54 CJ-3B
64 CJ-3B
85 CJ-8 Chase Jeep
We all made the whole trip without mechanical issues…. of course we also spent all day Saturday getting them all ready.  Generators, fuel lines, carb fixes, + painting a windshield on the yellow ’46.    We made it with the windshields down the whole way too….  looked pretty cool coming down the road!”
Here are a couple pics.  You can see all the pics on FaceBook:  http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.466258433386204.107776.338546552824060&type=1

The Great Willys Picnic Show and Swap Meet:  learn more here http://www.cj3a.info/picnic/

June 10, 2012 from 9 am – 4 pm at the Wanamaker, Kempton & Southern Railroad, located in Kempton, Pennsylvania

It’s time to plan for the 13th annual Great Willys Picnic, Car Show and Swap Meet. All vehicles are welcome: stock, modified, projects, CJs, Wagons, Trucks, Jeepsters, Military, Cars and even GPWs! Every pre-1970 Willys vehicle is eligible to win door prizes. This show has grown into the largest Northeast Willys event. Over 45 vehicles and hundreds of enthusiasts were present at last year’s picnic. There is plenty of space for selling your spare parts in the swap meet area. Bring your Willys memorabilia and interesting parts for show and tell. Be sure to arrive early because at 3:00 PM the door prize winners are announced and awarded. Bring your own picnic lunch or purchase food at the refreshment stand.

The Picnic will be held on the grounds of the Wanamaker, Kempton & Southern Railroad located in the scenic village of Kempton, Pennsylvania. This is a great setting to display our classic Willys vehicles, as well as entertainment for the entire family. Also on-site is the Schuykill & Lehigh Model Railroad Club’s HO model train display.

As always the Willys Picnic, Show and Swap is free. Plan to take the optional train ride for a very reasonable fee.

His Bucket List Checked, Kevin Heads Back to Georgia

• CATEGORIES: Event, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Kevin filed this report  from Moab at the end of the Willys Overland Rally, Moab 2012.  Thanks Kevin!  Don’t forget to visit the oldwillysforum.com to prepare for next year’s rally.

Kevin writes, “We made it to Moab from Georgia, what an experience! I traveled 1,750 miles @ 25 cents per mile.

I had my share of adventure — Tranny coolant line breaks, gas gauge peg’s at fuel, lost a gas cap and bought a non-vent cap, which caused every hose connected to the tank leak like the Titanic of gas, loose distributor, two plug wires not doing their job, busted motor mouint, spring perches broke (spot welded).   All the particapants made it up the Pucker Hill, but me … oh what fun it is  to get stuck and broke down. Despite all of this, I had a Great Time!!!  These people know how to party and have an honest good time!

All too quickly MOAB 3 – 2012 has come to an end.  So, I’m on my way back to Georgia, carrying plenty of red sand for the ride home.

One more item off the Bucket List.”

These first two pictures are of Kevin’s wagon:

Pics from the WAAAM

• CATEGORIES: Event, Features, Museums This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Ralph’s CJ-2A.  More on his Jeep later.

It was a gorgeous day at the WAAAM military day.  Ann and I are both sun burnt and relaxing to a couple bloody marys to help us cool down.  We met a lot of nice folks, sold books and t-shirts, and got to check out a variety of jeeps.

Brian, who is the resident jeep guy at the WAAAM has about eight jeeps (I lost count, so I could be wrong on the exact number) just at the museum.  Some have been restored and some are hidden away in one of the ancillary hangers, which Ann and I got to see.  Brian’s jeep of choice is the M-38A1, but he has a variety of them at various places he owns.  After talking with Brian a bit, he offered to show us his dad’s 1976 CJ-5 that he bought new.  He said it only has 5000 miles on it and sports the original LEVI package.  I have never seen an original LEVI package like he showed us.  Even Brian doesn’t get to drive his dad’s jeep … (see the pic at the bottom of the post – everything is original).

I wanted to thank Ralph for dropping by in his CJ-2A.  He has read eWillys for a few years now and lives in Hood River.  He came by to enjoy the planes, meet me and purchase a book.  Later in the day we walked out to check out his jeep.   Thanks for coming by Ralph!

Thanks to Blaine for dropping by as well.  I’ll see you again at the FC Get Together!

Here are a few pics:

My gal just loves a big gun.  We learned from one of the visitors that the reason these jeeps don’t tip over when the 106mm cannon fires is that it actually fires in two directions, backwards and forwards.  She was very happy to explain this to me!

2012 FC Roundup Report

• CATEGORIES: Event, FC150-FC170-M677, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I wanted to extend our thanks to everyone who made our visit at this year’s Roundup memorable and fun.  And a special thanks to Jesse for inviting me to attend, despite the lack of my own FC.  Also, I really appreciated everyone who told me how much they enjoyed reading this website.  Your feedback makes my efforts worthwhile!

On Saturday I was able to win a raffle price, 2 headlight gaskets (courtesy of Roy).  After winning them,  I announced my grand plan to build an FC around the gaskets.  Yes, we’ll build from the front of the FC (fc-150? fc-170? something else) to its rear.  I expect this is going to be a slooowwww project.

I even found the perfect FC project in Tucson as we drove out of town on Sunday morning; well, drove is a stretch.  More like, plodded along due to an overturned semi in Black Canyon whose delivery of vegetables will likely be delayed (though the local rabbits should have some good forage for a while).  Unfortunately, Tucson was in the opposite direction from where we were going and I suspect this incredible deal will be gone by the time I could ever make it back down there.

1961 FC-170 $450: (SOLD quickly after I posted it; it was in Tucson).  Check out the early hubs on this, too.

So, until our FC is complete, I will just have to enjoy looking at and riding in other people’s FCs. Here’s some random pictures from the event.  Thanks again to everyone and I look forward to the FC Get Together in Washington.  If you don’t have an FC, find one and join the fun next year!

Here are a few last minute details:
We will be driving as a group in FCs to breakfast every morning and also to Dinner some of the nights.
Parking on my property is for FCs / FleetVans only, no exceptions.
Absolutely no smoking near the vehicles, the vehicles on display have vented gas caps.
A smoking area will be provided away from Vehicles.
I love all Children and Dogs, but this event is about FCs, at my house, I will (I have had to) ask people to leave, if you come here with any animal that is not on a leash at your side, Small Children must also be near there parents at all times.
All vehicles on display have owners, please have respect of other peoples property, do not open any doors or sit in anyone’s vehicle, without the owner being present.
It is unfortunate that the fuel prices continue to increase and causing some grief to all of us. I am very grateful to all of you, that are bringing vehicles from far away. I am also grateful to know about all the continued efforts, that some of you have done, that will be bringing new vehicles this year.

Thank You

Moonshiner’s Swapmeet Pics

• CATEGORIES: Event, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I was a little delayed in posting these pics from the swapmeet a week and a half ago, so I will push the pics of the WAAAM visit off until tomorrow.  At the swapmeet there were a few pics of jeeps and racers I wanted to include in this post.  But, I couldn’t leave the booth because the two times I did leave readers dropped by to say “hi”.  My faithful photographer did make it out to snap some pictures, getting wet in the process, but couldn’t quite read my mind as to which pictures I wanted;  Of course, my mind, like the rest of me, was cold that day, so I doubt there was much going on inside my mind for Ann to read.

As you can see, the booth design was compact, but efficient.  Herm was nice enough to give me some front space.  In exchange I even managed to sell something for him while he and his kids were off purchasing all kinds of deals (and he found a couple of astonishing deals on parts).  I have books, tshirts, signage and, most importantly, warm liquids.

In this picture you can see Herm wheeling and dealing on the phone, with his son Richard to his right, and their friend Dan to Richard’s right.

Here is a good example of the type of trailers that are brought in by sellers.  Trailers are piled with as many parts and pieces as they can put on them.  The building in the background is full of sellers and is only one of several buildings.  Many more sellers were outside.

Moonshiner’s 2012 Swapmeet Report

• CATEGORIES: Event, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Thanks to Herm, Richard, Don and Marty for sharing their space with us!

It was a wet and cold morning when Ann and I arrived at the Puyallup Fair Grounds for the 2012 Swap Meet.  Because we dropped our stuff off on Saturday, there was very little for us to bring in, so we arrived at 7:30AM, pulled out some books, tshirts and business cards and began our wait for the gates to open at 9AM.

It was a cold wait as I was under the impression that they would close the large doors to the build where the space was located, so neither Ann nor I were dressed especially warm,  but the windy cold weather blew in all day.  We did our best to keep warm.

I really didn’t know what to expect when the crowds arrived, but eventually we were selling both books and tshirts, so by day’s end I was pleased by the results.  Even better, there were a surprising number of people who hadn’t heard of eWillys, so many business cards were passed out.  Ann also went around letting people with older jeeps know that I would list their jeeps for free if they didn’t sell.  More than a few wondered what the ‘catch’ was.  She tried to explain that there was no catch, but I don’t think everyone was sold on that.

A number of readers stopped by, some to just say hi and that they loved the site, others stayed longer and talked.  Even my cousin came by, though I’d forgotten to text him I was there.  A few of the guys from the space next to us came over.  It turns out they were from the Misfits Jeep Club, which was a club based partly in Renton, so I was familiar with the club (truth be told, I had a crush on one of the female members of the club in high school, but that’s another long story).  Anyway, Bob Miles and Bob Moran were members of the Seattle Jeep Club, so they knew many of the older PNW4WDA and Wandering Willys Jeep Club Member folks that I knew.

So, despite the cold weather, the swap meet was bigger than ever and people found treasures in other peoples junk.  Ann did takes some pics, but I will download and publish them tomorrow.  I’m wiped today.

Looks like snow in Snoqualmie Pass tomorrow (pass is currently closed as of Sunday Evening) so we will be taking the longer way back to Pasco.  We are hoping to have time to drop by the WAAAM to take pictures of the jeeps on our way through The Dalles, Oregon.

Jeep Trip this weekend to Idaho City, Id (near Boise)

• CATEGORIES: Event, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Doug contacted me tonight.  He and some friends will be making a trip up to Idaho City to do some Jeeping.  I drove above Idaho City last year in Biscuit and there are some fun places to explore.  I only got lost once.  Below are the details.  Btw, take the bear and mountain lion and heard wolf warnings serious!

Idaho city

“There are a few Willys owners here in the Boise area who are taking a trip this next Saturday, Oct 15. Several of us met up about a month ago and made the trip to Idaho City. We had 2 CJ3Bs, a M38A1, M37 and M35A3, it was really cool. This will be our second trip and the last one for the year.

If there is anyone interested but cannot make this trip, they can contact me at: willysjeepcj3b@gmail.com and we will get them added to our email list.

Old Jeeps and military vehicles: join us for a drive on the Boise National Forest, Saturday, October 15. Travel will be on public roads in and around Boise N.F. Family and friends welcome.

Trip plan: Depart from Reserve St. alongside Fort Boise City Park in downtown Boise at 9:00 a.m. sharp. Travel up Shaw Mtn/Rocky Canyon Road #260 through the foothills to Robie Creek/Clear Creek Road #261, then Grimes Creek Road #364 to #307 and take 307 into Idaho City. Todd lives on the Hwy. 21 side and will be meeting us at the jct. of #260 and #261, so anyone coming from that side can do the same. Idaho City has a long and interesting history.

Here’s a link to the C of C website. http://www.idahocitychamber.com/ Gas and grub at Idaho City, then backtrack to Pine Creek Road #366 .

If time and weather permits, we’ll go up Pine Creek Road to Shafer Butte, circle Bogus Basin Ski Area, get on #275 below Bogus and take it back to Rocky Canyon Road. Total distance, including the Shafer Butte section, will be approx. 100 – 120 miles. Elevations will be between 2500’ and 7500’. Highway 21 is nearby in case you need to leave early.

Maps? There are many roads in this area, some public, some private, some with travel restrictions. The Forest Service office on Overland in Boise (next to Walmart) has two types. There are black and white “Motor Vehicle Use Maps”, one for each of the 5 ranger districts on the forest. They’re free, get all 5. They contain info on this year’s travel restrictions. You’ll need the Mtn. Home and Idaho City maps for this trip. They also have a large, color “Travel Map” for $9. It’s over 10 years old but gives a good overview of the entire forest. Todd, who lives in the area and travels it often in his 3B, has noticed that the forest maps aren’t always complete, so he uses topos too.

A final note: Todd also reminded us that he’s seen bear and mountain lion and heard wolves while travelling in this area. There was a mountain lion attack near his house last week.
