Farm Jeep Bio on Me

• CATEGORIES: Features, Website

Barry Thomas and his son Evan have been working hard to expand Farmjeep.com, a resource for early farm implements and other jeep information. As they note in the “about us” section, they are a “father and son documenting that we don’t know what we are doing since 2002” … I can relate to that as well.

If you haven’t been there in a while (or never), check it out, as the father and son duo have rebuilt the earlier site into a larger one with lots of information. The jeep lift research area is especially valuable. You can even learn a little bit about me, as Barry generously asked me to contribute a short bio for the site.

Bernd’s Bad Day at the Gas Pump

• CATEGORIES: Features

Some days you wish you could do over. Bernd had one of those days recently. His goal was to transport a ride-on lawyer mower to the Austrian workshop to repair an oil leak.  After loading the lawnmower, he discovered his CJ-5 needed gas, so he drove to the local gas station and put in about a half tank, then proceeded on his way.

Soon, his jeep wasn’t quite running correctly. Remembering he still had his receipt from the gas station, he pulled it out only to discover that he filled up with diesel instead of standard gas.

So, Bernd sent the CJ-5 to a ‘spa’ for some cleaning and reinvigorating. We hope it recovers soon!

Early Newgren/Love Lift on eBay

• CATEGORIES: Features, Parts

Maury shared this rare lift for auction on eBay.

View all the information on eBay

“You are bidding on a vintage NEWGREN (LOVE) under body rear hitch for Willys Jeep CJ Models. It was removed from a 1946 cj2a with column shift, so I know it is an early version of this lift. A little rusty and crusty, but still there for restoration or duplication. These are very rare to find so this may be once in a lifetime find for the avid collector. Listing is for local pickup, but I will aid in shipping and banding to pallet if you are handling a truck freight option. Feel free to email any questions. Watch my other auctions for some other vintage accessories”

Year? Jeepney Salem, OH $32,500

• CATEGORIES: Features, Other 4x4s

UPDATE: Rudy noted that this was sold at auction in 2014.

(07/05/2019) Craig shared this nice looking Jeepney. It’s got a number of cool details, including a map of the midwest painted on the ceiling. Listed as a 1946, I couldn’t say for sure if that year is accurate or not.

“1946 F-134, T-90 3 speed, if you want a vehicle to take to the car and Jeep shows that will always bring a smile and draw a crowd this is it!! Super rare to find in this country, Jeepneys were made after WWII when we left our Jeeps in the Philippines, the people there were very crafty and creative, they turned the WWII Army Jeeps into colorful people haulers, there are only a few in this country, here is your chance for a cool vehicle for your collection that is guaranteed to stand out.”

Ed Pranger’s Artworks

• CATEGORIES: Artists/Drawings, Features

Jeff Pranger shared the following two wonderful paintings by his father, Ed. Ed Pranger was a WWII US Navy artist and cartoonist for The Hoist in San Diego. According to Jeff, after the war, when surplus Jeeps were plentiful (and Ed was single), his father and his buddies would go hunting and drinking in their Jeeps in the Yakima, Washington, area. Ed produced many paintings and some had Jeeps.

Both of these paintings appeared to have been painted in Anacortes, Washington, one year a part (each has Ed’s name, the year, and the location it was painted on it). The first was completed in 1988 and the second in 1989.

It being a small world, I traveled through Anacortes (to catch the ferry) both of those years, as I was working in the San Juans in 1988 and then got married in the San Juans in 1989.

Willys MB/GPW From Transformers “Bumblebee” Movie @ Auction

• CATEGORIES: Features, videos

UPDATE: Tim discovered that this is back up for sale. The auction is set for August 31, 2019. Starting price is $20,000.

https://www.auctionzip.com/auction-lot/Bumblebee-2018-Screen-Used-Hero-Willys-Jeep-W-L_A3540B7B53

======================

Previous post from August 2018 with updates:

On August 25th, the jeep (GPW frame with MB body?) used in the upcoming Transformers was up for auction. It’s unclear whether it sold or not (I suspect not). The starting bid at that time was $19,000.

As you can see in the pics, this MB isn’t all stock. It appears to have a GPW front crossmember. Another pic, from the top rear, suggests it has MB toolboxes.

In the movie, the Bumblebee character starts off as a jeep, but soon becomes a VW, remaining a VW for the remainder of the movie.

Empi Dune Buggy

• CATEGORIES: Features, Unusual

UPDATE: David Crawford reports that his father built 36 different Empi’s that ended up all over the western US. In the comments below, he wrote,

“My dad, Bill Crawford, of Tuolumne, CA, “sparkplugged” the build, on those 2’VW based cars. He bought a set of plans for the EMPI Sportster, and made a whole bunch of mods. He planned to build one article, and 20 years later, there were @ 36 of them built, and running around.
Three of them went to South Dakota. A friend in the Phoenix area, over the years, took 3 of the cars from Norcal, and sold them in the Phoenix area.

Most of the cars were built in his home shop, and about 10 of the cars were assembled by students in a high school auto shop survey class that he taught. There are still several of them floating around Norcal.

=====================================

Original Post June 2012:

The Empi Dune Buggy was an early metal kit for VWs. There were several styles.  According to tunacan.net, “The EMPI Sportster was a sheet metal buggy built on a modified VW Beetle floorpan. It was available in a two passenger model or a four passenger model. All Sportsters featured a “Deluxe Folding Windshield” and were constructed of 20-, 18-, and 12- guage steel.

Jim, who pics are shown below, wrote:

“We got the Empi running and driving the night before the Durango car show. I washed, scrubbed and entered this quality piece of early 1960s dune buggy Americana and am shocked that I didn’t win a trophy! Crazy huh? All sarcasm aside, little kids loved it, old men remembered it from “back in the day”, rat rod guys thought it cool, I was really surprised at how much attention and photos it created. Still though, no trophy? People just don’t appreciate a good old fashioned, fugly, all metal dune buggy these days, sigh…”

Jim notes that he strategically positioned himself near the only flat fenders at the show.  You can see some of his older flatties here.

Day 15 Aug 16: The Sun Has Set On Newfoundland 2019

<–  Day 14 Aug 15: Beach Bums | The Sun Has Set on Newfoundland 2019

2019-08-16-leaving-pei2

Early Friday morning, the Newfoundland 2019 crew disbanded. I believe Joe left first; he’s headed back to Maryland to reunite with Emily and their son. The Ogles and Ingrums departed soon after Joe; they are headed back to the Paris of Illinois. Jim, Kevin and Bill left a little later.

2019-08-16-leaving-pei4 2019-08-16-leaving-pei3

Exiting the island didn’t quite go smoothly for Jim and Kevin, as they succumbed to a clogged fuel filter. But, forty-five minutes later, they were back on the road.

IMG_0173 IMG_0174

I’d guess everyone is still a couple days from arriving at home. If there are any additional reports, I’ll share them. Otherwise, Newfoundland 2019 is a wrap.

Thanks to everyone who met up with the Newfoundland crew, provided local advice, and followed along the journey. I know the crew really enjoyed meeting you all and, as Cowboy said in one of his Facebook comments, it renews faith in people as you meet folks from all walks of life. From my perspective, being able to meet people on our trips always makes traveling so much more satisfying.

Finally, many thanks to Bill for spearheading this trip. I wish more of his fellow Alaska Or Rusters could have joined, but if not in body and jeep, we were there in spirit, following along with each photo you sent and each tale you spun. I believe we all agree that there will be another grand journey together at some point and we have a couple ideas percolating.
