1957 Shenco Full Cab Enclosure Brochure

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features

UPDATE: Better quality scans have replaced the poorer images.

This rare 1-page Shenco sales brochure demonstrates that the Cab Enclosure Hardtop was available outside the military, which I hadn’t known. This does explain why we’ve seen this version of a top on some non-military vehicles.

Body Extensions For Early 1/4 Ton Jeeps

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features • TAGS: .

UPDATE: Someone in Georgia is selling newly built beds (see post below). So, I thought it would be a good time to rerun this post.

========================

Originally published in 2016: This may come as a surprise (not) that early jeeps weren’t known for their vast amounts of space. We’ve all seen military photos showing jeeps packed full of stuff, like this SAS desert fighter:

sas-jeep

When the war ended and CJ-2As were introduced, a couple companies recognized the need for more room and solved the problem by creating add-on bed extensions (also known as bed extenders and body extensions). These bolted to the back and, usually, had supports that dropped to the PTO bar to help support the extra weight. Then, the tailgate was fixed to the very rear of the extension. The goal of this post is an effort to identify the different companies and their products.

As early as August and September of 1946, two different patents were filed, both by the same people.I have been unable to discover if that first patent model was ever built, but the second one has two sides that fold down similar to the Newgren (shown in #2).

Various Bed Extensions identified so far:

  1. Porter Reed Bed Extension: One of the earliest known bed extensions was produced by Porter & Reed. It was marked along with a half top, creating a truck out of a jeep.
    porter-reed-hardtop-closeup-bed-extension
    porter-reed-hardtop-extendedbed-1 porter-reed-hardtop-extendedbed-2
  2. Newgren Bed Extensions: The Newgren Company also entered the bed extension field in the later 1940s with two different versions. The first was their standard bed extension:1947-special-equipment-newgren-body-extension2
    The second model Newgren offered was a collapsable version.
    1947-special-equipment-bed-extension-newgren-collapsible
  3. S & B Corporation’s Jeep Panel Body: About the same time Newgren and Porter & Reed introduced their extensions, the S & B Corporation made their own spin on adding more room by selling a kit that converted the jeep into a panel van.

  4. Koenig Bed Extensions: By 1955, Koenig had entered the market. Whether the company designed their own or bought out one of their competitors isn’t know (to me), but Koenig sold the extensions for at least a decade. This first ad is from 1955, the second from 1960, and the third from the mid-1960s.

    koenig-bed-extender-cs-co3
  5. Wall & Borg Bed Extender: In the 1960s, a Lake Tahoe, California, company called Wahl & Borg introduced a unique bed extension. Rather than bolt on to the rear of the jeep, theirs slid out.
    wahl-borg-slide-out-bed-extender

There have been a number of bed extensions that have resold over the last ten years on Craigslist and eBay, some attached to jeeps and some by themselves. I have found it difficult to distinguish between them, never having owned or seen that many up close. You can see all the ones documents thus far on eWillys: http://www.ewillys.com/tag/bed-extension/

Derek Redmond also has some excellent information on extensions over at the CJ-3B Page. https://cj3b.info/Tech/BodyExtension.html

WANTED: Photo of an Early Monroe 3-Point Lift Tag

• CATEGORIES: Features, wanted

Ted Jordan is hoping to find a good photo of a data tag from an early Monroe 3-Point Lift. Apparently, the early lifts did not have stampings; instead they had a tag attached as shown in the poor photo below. Ted would like to get a good photo of one so he can have the tag recreated. If you have something, either comment below, email me d @ deilers.com or email Ted direction willysted @ charter.net.

Willys-Overland Tire Sidewall and Radiator Flush on eBay

Maury spotted these items. The 1/4 jeep looks almost like a high-hood, but given a Jeepster is shown, I’m guess it is actually a 2A or 3A. I would guess these are 1949 or 1950 containers.

“J” Cap Hubcaps Spokane, WA $120

• CATEGORIES: Features

Did we ever determine the origin of these hubcaps? A similar use of the “J” logo was used on Cutlas hubcaps, but the hubcap was much more plain and the lettering was black, not red. A similar set was for sale in Florida back in 2017. I checked the Brian Chuchua and Conferr catalogs, but there’s sign of them in there.

Sta-Bar Kit Brochures

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features

UPDATE:  This 2012 post has been updated to reflect the existence of two different Sta-Bar Kits.

Two different manufactures (were there any others?) offered stabilizing kits that were meant to reduce some of the horizontal shifting that can occur when using a rear lift.

Here’s a detail look at a Monroe 3pt Hitch without a stabilizer hit.

monore-lift-part-by-part-lores

The Roper Manufacturing Company out of Zanesville, Ohio, manufactured a set of bars that pivoted on special vertical plates attached to the ends of the PTO bar and attached to the lower links as highlighted below:

monroe-3pt-hitch-w-roper-stabalizer

Here’s the Roper Sta-Bar Kit brochure:

1955-roper-sta-bar-kit-brochure1-lores 1955-roper-sta-bar-kit-brochure2-lores

The Green Manufacturing Company’s Green Star-Bar Kit has bars that appear to attach to the outside of the lower links in a similar manner to the Roper kit. I can’t tell how the kit attaches to the PTO bar or how that might differ from the Roper setup. The pricing shows it was slightly less expensive than the Roper Sta-Bar Kit.

Just a Few Posts for Wednesday

• CATEGORIES: Features

Only a few posts for Wednesday. I’ve begun re-organizing some of our older trips (Southwest Spring FC Roundup 2013 trip for example) to make navigating the pages easier. It turned out to be much more work than I’d planned, as I hadn’t gotten the hang yet of traveling and documenting a trip. My goal is to get them all organized in one section of the site … So, just a few updates for today.

If you want to see (or re-see) our 2013 Southwest trip, here it is:

Circus Themed Dealer Contest plus Record on eBay

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features

“A splendid advertising promotion for a Factory-funded contest between dealers to sell Kaiser Jeep products. 7 1/4″ x 7 1/2″, slick illustrated paper with a very thin record of the same size, typical of a 45-RPM record – but in this case meant to be played at 33 1/3-RPM.

Jeep Sales Circus contest – undated;
Prepared under the Kaiser Jeep name – inaugurated 1963;
Kaiser Jeep address uses the Postal Code (Toledo 1, Ohio) which was discontinued in 1963 with the inauguration of Zip Codes;
Dealers could win points with each Jeep sale or with Jeep parts, Accessories sales;
No discussion about what you’d win;
Kaiser sponsorship of The Greatest Show on Earth” TV program – ABC-TV – the series ran for one year, 1963-1964.
A splendid and very uncommon sales promotion. Note – a glued strip attached the record to the brochure – directions called for the cover to be folded under the record and the back cover, and played on your record player in that format – the brochure and the record all show the center hole drill. This record was detached from the glued strip.”
