The NEW Early Ford V-8 Museum, Auburn, IN

In 2018, the Early Ford V-8 Museum tripled its size. Housed in an original deco-style dealership in Auburn, Indiana, it looks worth a stop on our next trip. We didn’t have time to stop at the old museum when we visited Auburn in 2013, but it sure looks worth a stop now. Anyone been there?

The NF Trip 2019 (Or Rust) | Day 2 Aug 3rd: Newfoundland Found, First Group Camp –>

2019-newfoundland-trip1

Russ (at the wagon) and Joe Bee’s CJ-3B are filling up for their meeting with the group.

Over the last couple of days a group of intrepid explorers–tough, thoughtful, highly trained, without fear, able to withstand the worst summer conditions–have set out for the wilds of Newfoundland, Canada. Many of these brave souls participated in the 2017 Alaska Or Rust trip.

Having survived western Canada two years ago, they are ready to join forces once again to explore the wilds of eastern Canada. They are equipped only with the latest techo gadgets, GPS locators, and A/C units in their trailers, along with healthy doses of humor,  Some are in classic jeeps and others in modern ones, but all have joined to share in the goal of adventure, friendship, and camaraderie.

2019-newfoundland-trip10-tentative-map

This is a rough estimate of the Newfoundland trip. I don’t know what the final route will be.

Together, they’ll be exploring the other worldly area of Newfoundland, places with strange names, such as the unique town of Dildo, where they might just get a photo with Captain Dildo … yes, I kid you not.

captain-dildo2

Ann and I will not be joining them on this trip, so I’ll do my best to keep folks up-to-date on their travels. In fact, I haven’t been involved in the planning process, so I’ll only be learning where they are going as they travel. I also don’t know who all the participants will be.

Naturally, a trip like this can’t begin without some last minute heroics. This year’s award goes to Joe Bee, who worked his butt off to finish up engine and brake upgrades to Russ Lawton’s Wagon.

Bill Reiss also spent time checking over his Dually CJ-5, which turned out to be a good idea, as he discovered a tire-popper in one of his tires.

Baron Rudolph Von Ripper

• CATEGORIES: Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I was reading one of Ernie Pyle’s books and ran across his description of Baron Rudolph Von Ripper, a man who probably would have fit in with Taratino’s Inglorious Bastards. I did a little research on him. He was a well regarded artist who developed a taste for warfare.

Read about Von Ripper here: https://www.historynet.com/von-ripper-painter-gun.htm (It’s worth a read … he had a fascinating life)

Here’s one of his works that include a jeep:

When Time Magazine named Hitler Man of the Year, the magazine used Von Ripper’s gruesome illustration; Von Ripper had some up-close experience with the SS and was as anti-Nazi as anyone.

Given these brochures show a CJ-3A, but only early trucks and wagons, I’d say these brochures are from 1949 or early 1950.

1970 Con-Ferr Catalog Pages 1-19 plus Covers

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Catalogs, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:

View pages 1-20 plus Covers and History:
View pages 20-42:
View pages 42-96:

Below is the Initial post of Con-Ferr Catalog, pages 1-19 plus covers.
This post contains 24 pages from an undated Con-Ferr 100-page catalog, one that I’d guess is from 1970.

The Southern California company of Con-Ferr was founded in 1961 by Pete Condos & Frank Ferro (hence the Con-Ferr), though eventually Pete bought out Frank to become sole owner.

Pete had a background in Scouts, while Frank had a background in Jeeps. Their goal was to provide speciality off-road products for both types of vehicles. To that end, not only did they run their parts shop in Burbank, California, they also built custom jeeps like the Convert Cougar and the Super Jeep. Pete’s driver, Bill Haddad, drove Condo’s race jeeps to 18 victories in the 21 races in which he entered.

Pete would go on to co-found the National Off-Road Racing Association (NORRA) in 1966, which produced races like the Baja 1000 and Mint 500. During that time, Condos also produced racing vehicles for other folks, such as  off-road racers for Steve McQueen and James Garner.

At the time the catalog was published, Con-Ferr billed itself as America’s largest Off-Road vehicle accessory provider and had more than 44,000 square feet of storage, work, and retail space. It was an authorized dealer of Kaiser Jeep, Toyota Land Cruiser, and Manx.

Year? Perfect Jeep and Parts Catalog on eBay

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This is my first time seeing a Perfect Jeep and Parts Company catalog. As best as I can uncover, the company was owned by Bernard S. Forman, who, as owner, copyrighted the name and catalog in 1956. It may have been this Bernie who used to live in Chicago and died last year.

This brochure and the company’s location seems to have been pretty close to Berg’s, so they must have been direct competitors. This brochure has 23 pages and is not in good shape.

These are the final scans from Brian Chucha’s catalog (see the earlier scans here). I’ll eventually combine these altogether.

Thanks to Maury, I’ve recently purchased a Con-Ferr catalog from the early 1970s which ought to have a whole lot of interesting content, too. I should have some scans of that in early August.

Handy Table for Sleeping/Eating

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images, Old News Articles • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This article comes from the 1963 issue of Four Wheeler Magazine. Perhaps more interesting to me than the table, which is utilized for sleeping or as a table is the top. The top was modified to accommodate the table, but I’ve not seen a top that also had the rhombus-shaped rear windows. I believe the bumpers may be from Con-Ferr (or were later sold by Con-Ferr).

Charles shared these photos from Belgium’s 2019 National Day Celebration parade. I’ve also added a Belgium fun-facts video; did you know that 80% of billiard balls come from Belgium?

Below are the pics from Charles. The whole royal family was present for the parade, as this year is the 75th year of Belgium’s liberation. Some thirty old-aged belgian veterans were present (aged between 90 -98 ), each personally greeted by the king. The parade included sherman tanks and about 20 Willys jeeps.

9th Annual King Family Jeep Weekend

• CATEGORIES: Event, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

IMG_6707Jason reports that his family continued their annual jeep weekend.

“The King family of Parke County, Indiana held their 9th annual Sweetwater Run Jeep Rally over the 4th of July weekend, 2019.  Family members, and extended family members came from six states. Those traveling the farthest came from Oregon. Several events were held…… Favorite Jeep contest, A nine-mile timed route with each leg a different speed, to name a couple.

IMG_6710

After a pitch-in Bar-B-Que dinner we followed the trail of the Wabash and Erie Canal. We ended our afternoon Jeep Tour by driving up the world-famous Newport Hill…. where the Newport Hill Climb (newporthillclimb.com) is held annually during the first weekend of October.

IMG_6712

We ended the day with music. Singer/songwriter Jack Shannon performed an hour of original songs. His singing and guitar playing was enjoyed by everyone.”

Willys jeep Dealer Service Card Reminder **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Features, Postcards This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Using the Stradivarius as an example seems an odd choice to me given the Jeep’s demographic. Seems like they could have picked something a little less aloof. Maybe something like, “even a race car needs tune ups” or “even John Wayne has to go to the doctor for checkups”?

“Dealer sales service advertising of Willys. Measures approximately 5″ by 8″ Good condition.”
