Here’s a neat photo from the NPS archives which appears to show a GPW (based on the bumper) parked in front of a B-25H. This was possibly taken in the Aleutians somewhere.

Radio Jeep at an Airfield in England Circa 1944

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Leo found this photo in the US National Archives. He writes, “I found this incredible picture of an airfield Jeep somewhere in England in WW2. I don’t see invasion stripes on the planes wings, so it must be while training before the invasion june ’44. The C47 Skytrain has its hook lowered and is about to hook on to the towline of the CG4 Waco glider in the front. The radio equipped Jeep is probably guiding the pilot of the C47. It must have been quite a ride to be snatched by a hurtling C47….”

Last week Troy and some friends were jeeping in the snow at Copper Creek in Washington State. They were kind of looking for Christmas trees, but it was more about playing. Looks like a fun time.

Looking for DJ-3A Fastback Style Top Measurements

• CATEGORIES: DJ-3A, Features • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE II: Charles spotted the 2010 post below that shows a DJ-3A auctioned on eBay from Massachusetts. Anyone recognize it or know the previous or current owner?

====================

UPDATE: Bill tells me they are also looking for pictures of any surviving examples of tops and the bows themselves. The bows are the most important item they need to duplicate. The top is something we can construct but without a correct set of bows we won’t be on the mark.

Bill and Charles are seeking the measurements for the DJ-3A Fastback Style Top like the one shown below. There’s currently a thread about it here http://z4.invisionfree.com/CJ3B_Bulletin_Board/index.php?showtopic=5356, but so far no one has had any luck finding them.

As I look at these two pictures, it appears to me that top folded up like a Jeepster top. I’ve never noticed that before. I’ve never run across one of these tops in the real world, only in brochures or press photos.

Bob spotted this photo of a FC-170 built for airports. It’s caption read “New for 1957”. Like the CJ-5 and Jeep Truck airport vehicles, this likely had dual tanks, possibly for water, de-ice or refuse. Here are more examples at the CJ-3B page: http://cj3b.info/Literature/AircraftSupport.html

Chasing the Uranium Dream in Utah

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3A, Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Blaine spotted this great article on ‘hunting’ uranium in Utah. I’m sure there were many jeep used to explore southern Utah while chasing uranium, but finding pictures hasn’t been easy. This article written by Brett Huelen and published in the Canyon County Zephyr contains several jeep photos, along with some great stories from his time living in Southern Utah.

I didn’t start out to have an ambulance theme today, but here we go. This jeep was part of the New Zealand medical services in the MIddle East during WWII. I can’t remember seeing a rear modified in that manner.

Will Rogers in The Ropin’ Fool

• CATEGORIES: Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This has nothing to do with jeeps, but as the plane landed last night at Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City I thought it was altogether appropriate I was reading a biography about Will by Ben Yodaga. Despite his far reaching fame during the 1930s, most people today don’t remember much about Will and even fewer have seen his movies.

I won’t go into his history here, but for a brief time in the early 1920s Will ran his own studio and made some movie shorts. One of those movies called “The Ropin’ Fool” showed off his roping skills. For the roping scenes, his lariat (or lariets — he using three in one trick) was covered in chalk so the tricks could be seen more easily. The tricks shown in the three minute clip below will amaze you!
