The General Purpose Car?

• CATEGORIES: Features, Magazine This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I received the June 19, 1943, issue of Liberty Magazine today.  I bought it because it has an article titled “The Amazing Blitz Buggy”.  I don’t have time to scan it tonight, but should have it read, scanned and posted in the next couple of days.  But, I did want to make a quick comment about it.

Having glanced at the article, two things surprised me.  One, it was written by the President of Willys Overland Joseph W. Frazer. Two, he claims the official name of the vehicle was “General Purpose Car”.  You can see that claim in the highlighted portion of the article.  That could be the reason the term “General Purpose” vehicle has been appeared numerous times.

Not mint, but good condition given their age.  They measure about 10 inches long by 8 inches wide.  All the tires spin freely and have their nut caps on the wheels.  All have their stickers.  All have their steering wheels.  One is missing a headlight and that one has some paint wear and sticker/label peeling”

Veteran’s Day Weekend in Shasta Lake City, CA

• CATEGORIES: Event, Features, Reader Stories This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Steve snapped some photos of the Veteran’s Day Events on Saturday and Sunday.  He also added some information, too!

Steve writes, “Sunday I photographed Jack and his restored MB and M-100 trailer at the ceremony on Veteran’s Day,at the new Veteran’s Cemetery 10 miles West of town. Jack restored this Jeep exactly like the one he drove in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. It’s complete with machine gun mounted on the passenger’s side. I asked, and he said that most of their Jeeps were beat up MB’s left over from WWII. They didn’t see many “new” M38A-1 Jeeps during his tour.

Jack is a great man because he goes around to the local schools teaching kids how war is not a good thing, but it is necessary to protect our freedom from those who want to change us. He saw heavy action. Now he see that we are gradually losing our freedom as time goes on. He is now growing frail, and cannot go to as many schools as before. I told him I know someone who can make a professional video tape of him to preserve his presentation. He would like to do that.

He has a Korean friend who was 8 years old living through the Korean War. She accompanies Jack to the schools and shares her story of what their civilian family endured throughout the war in Korea. I don’t know her name, but she was the lady in the back of his Jeep in Korean attire during the Saturday’s Shasta City parade shown below.

The medallion Jack holds was from the Mayor of Seoul, South Korea marking the 50th anniversary of the war. The Mayor visited all the Korean Veteran’s groups and awarded that medallion to those who fought for his country. His gratitude meant a lot to that soldier, who never went back to that forsaken land, until much later in life. The City of Seoul was devastated during the war, and is now one of the most modern cities in the world. He didn’t recognize the airport when he landed several years ago. The old airport he remembered was a swampy land that was weathered by war.

Refurbished Former Fire Jeep by Edmund Angelus

• CATEGORIES: Builds, Features, Fire/Police/Industry Vehicles This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Matt, the owner of Edmund Angelus, forwarded me a couple sets of pictures this weekend. You might remember the  builds he shared with us a few years ago.  Since then Matt moved his automotive company to Roanoke, VA.  He not only knows his way around jeeps, but he also does complete collision repair on cars as well, along with fiberglass & gelcoat repairs to boats & personal water craft.

His new address is  3239 orange Ave, Roanoke,  Virginia.
His phone number is 540-354-4321.

One of his recent projects was a former Fire Jeep with the data plate BJ-102, indicating at one point it was a Boyer Fire Jeep.  Unfortunately, the fire equipment was long gone.  Matt writes, “The jeep was purchased by a friend of mine from a car dealer in West Virginia. Commissioned to an individual for a off frame restoration, the Jeep was dismantled way beyond what was really needed. Motor, transmission transfer case were in pieces. Every piece of sheet metal was soda blasted to bare metal. When I came a crossed it the rebuild was going nowhere and the body tub was on a trailer, outside with water standing in it. I contacted the owner and negotiated to take on the restoration. The rest is history as they say. Another proud customer.”

2nd Annual Kiss a Veteran Day

• CATEGORIES: Features, MB This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: With all the talk of parades on Saturday, I thought Veteran’s Day was Saturday and not Sunday.  Fear not, for I kissed my Veteran on Sunday, too.

This year’s Veteran’s Day was much more quiet and uneventful for us than last year’s. None-the-less, I performed my civic and patriotic duty by kissing a veteran, my wife (several times I might add).

We spent Veteran’s day at my parents, as we are up to do a some things for them over the next few days.  Mom was gone today to judge a gymnastic’s meet, which is what she does for most of the winter.  With her away we took over dinner chores for dad and asked him what he wanted.  He couldn’t decide, so I suggested something mom would never cook for him:  brats and sauerkraut cooked in a red wine and beef broth.  Mom doesn’t like anything with sauerkraut, so dad never gets to eat it.

For Ann and I, this was just the excuse we needed to head to Bellevue to visit Whole Foods. After all, Dad deserves the best sauerkraut I can find, right?  That’s exactly what I thought, too!

It takes about fifteen minutes on a good day to reach Whole Foods, though the only good time is around 2am in the morning.  Otherwise, it seems the drive along I-405 from Renton to Bellevue is an unpredictable series of stop-and-gos or just stops, but rarely just gos.  It’s often advisable to pack several ready-to-eat meals, a change of underwear, and notify next of kin before leaving for the trip, because you just never know.

On this day, which is Saturday, the northbound lanes were surprising go-ish and not stop-ish, while the southbound lanes were stop-ish.  We were traveling northbound, so we were happy, despite the busy traffic [editors note . . . I have just been informed that you should imagine Ann with combed hair and makeup — but that is the fictional part of this story, for the hair on both of our heads is best described as frightful].

A couple minutes into our trip, I asked Ann to hit me on the head, because I was clearly delirious. She asked why and I said, “because I think I see a MB jeep just ahead of us on the highway. Am I crazy?”  She chose not to hit me nor call me crazy, but instead looked ahead.  She didn’t see anything.  Then, I saw it again.

“There it is.  It’s on a trailer. I’m gonna get it!” I said.
“Go get it honey,” She replied. I started bobbing and weaving through traffic, employing all the skills I learned watching Canadian Dave when he drove an FC through an airport terminal, It took a mile or so, but I finally caught up to what turned out to be a good little jeep.  I’m assure the driver of the truck pulling the trailer and jeep though he was being stalked, because Ann was asking me to speed up, then slow down, speed up, then slow down, until she finally got some good shots of the vehicle.  As I was doing this, it suddenly dawned on me that the jeep had probably been at the Veteran’s Parade in Auburn earlier in the day, which is why it was looking extra special today.  Once we got our pics, we raced ahead, just in case the driver had called 911 to report a pair of crazy stalkers in a black car . . .

So, that was the second best thing that happened to us today. (The kiss of course being the best thing, right honey?)
