This needs some work.

“Here we have a Structo Jeep ride on fire truck. There is a dent in the back on the right side (see pics). The steering wheel may not be original. It has great patina! See pictures for condition. What you see is what you get. Selling as is. Please ask questions if you have them. Thanks for looking! Check out my other auctions for more great old stuff.”

I thought the hoses on this fire jeep were unusual.  I would think they would flap around in the wind when driving?

Norb’s unusual Grille on his ’53 Wagon

• CATEGORIES: Features, wanted This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Norb purchased this basketcase and is working to transform it into a custom wagon.  However, he is puzzled about the grille.

Norb writes, “I own a 1953 wagon that was a plow truck out in Wyoming for most of it’s life. It came to me with a Ford Y-block motor. The frame and suspension were shot, but the body is pretty good. I chopped the top and put it on a shortened Dodge Dakota chassis with a 318 V8 and 5spd. trans. Should make a nice little hotrod.  I know it was a “Jeep salad” when I got it. It had been hit in the front and repaired many years ago. I cannot ID the grill though. The side aprons have parking lights on them. The air intake hole in mine looks factory, but they are usually below the parking lights.”

I asked Dan for his input.  He wrote, “It looks like someone added a heater inlet hole to an early wagon grill (which were solid and didn’t have a hole) and then added extra marker lights also in a different position than factory. The heater inlet hole looks both larger and higher than what the factory added to the later wagons. I’m not sure when the factory added the heater inlet hole, but my beat guess is late 1950s.”

So, has anyone seen a factory wagon grille with the intake hole where Norb’s is?

For comparison, here is an image search for 1953 Wagon grilles

Vintage Comic w/o cover on eBay

• CATEGORIES: Comics, Features, Jeep Planes and Pilots This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I have posted this comic as a reminder that the term Jeep is found in conjunction with planes during world war two.  I suppose I need to track that a little better, because there are a variety of literary references to “Jeep Planes”.  There is no information about the comic in the description.

Zack’s DJ-5: His Daily Driver

• CATEGORIES: Builds, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Zack has been a regular reader of eWillys for a while now.  Though he comments occasionally, I never got around to asking what kind of jeep he has.  So, I asked.  Turns out he has two:  One a DJ-5 that he uses as a daily driver and the other a nice looking GPW that he hopes to restore to military spec. Here are some photos he sent for us.  All in all, it is a good looking DJ-5 that is a very practical vehicle, inexpensive to maintain, cheap on gas, and posi in the rear for bad weather.  Thanks for sharing Zack!

Paul unpacks 60 Year-Old Parts

• CATEGORIES: Builds, Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Paul wrote to share his experience unwrapping some old parts as he continues his M-38 rebuild.

Paul wrote, “One of the first jobs on my Willys rebuild list from many years ago was to overhaul the axles. Naturally all bearings and races were replaced with new, new ring and pinion gears with 4.27 ratios were installed along with a complete set of 11 inch backing plates and brake drums. Well, sometime during the past 25 or so years the new steering knuckle seals failed due to old age. Geeze, I haven’t even driven this thing yet and now I’m having to replace the replacement parts which are still new but old.

Oh well, it was time to go shopping once again. I was able to purchase a set of heavy duty steering knuckle seals from the local parts store (that can even be rebuilt when necessary) in addition to an extra set of replacement rubber seals for future use. Today I installed one seal kit on the left front knuckle with no problems, everything fit like factory, nothing was missing and the quality was perfect but that’s just what I’d expected. You should understand that these steering knuckle seal kits were packed by Willys Overland Motors for military use in May of 1952. The package had never been opened and all the parts were still coated with a preservative grease like coating, which required lots of paper towels to remove.

I can’t imagine whoever packed these parts so long ago had any idea that 60 years into the future some guy in Alaska would need these parts for his M-38 but I’m sure pleased the packer did such a good job protecting these seal kits. I took pictures of each step as I opened the package and the final photo shows the clean, new parts visible for the first time in over 60 years.”

1973 4 Door CJ-5 Custom Jeep Sunnyvale, TX **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ5, Features, Other 4x4s, Unusual This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.

This was made from 2 CJ-5s.  The seller provides a variety links and pictures for this neat project.

“This auction is for a custom four door CJ.  The Jeep was built using all CJ5 parts.  The front door is modeled off of a CJ7.  The rear door is modeled off of a CJ5.  The bed is extended to the length of a CJ6 or CJ8 Scrambler.  The frame is stretched 36 inches in the middle and 14 inches behind the rear axle.  The frame was boxed from the front to to the rear spring perches.  It has Dana 30 and Dana 40 axles both are open diffs.  The transfer case is a Dana 20.  The transmission is a 3 speed.  I believe it is a T150.  The engine is an AMC 360 from a 1972 Wagoneer.  It was rebuilt about 15,000 miles ago.  It was bored over.  The crank was turned.  It got all new bearings, new pistons, new valve guides, and hardened seats.  It has an RV cam, an Edelbrock SP2P low rise dual plane intake, and a Holley Street Avenger 570cfm carb.  The motor has more than enough power for a vehicle this size.  I drove it about a month on the new motor when I broke the input shaft on the old transmission.  I then put the heaviest spring in the secondaries of the carb and backed up the timing a little bit to take some of the grunt out of the motor.  The Jeep was built in 2009.  It got all new floors.  There is no rust in the body or frame.  The color is Rescue Green from a 2008-2009 Wrangler.  The seats are new from Bestop.  The seat belts were new in 2009.  It has a super thick aluminum radiator, power steering, and front disk brakes.  It has a 20 gallon gas tank from an 86 CJ7.  The tires are 33 10.50 15 BFG Mud T/A KM2.  The fronts have about 5k miles on them and the rears are new.  I have no idea how many miles are on the Jeep.  It has about 15k since built.  Almost everything was replaced at that time.  The tub and bed have bedliner throughout.  It looks funny in the pictures, because it is a little wet from washing the Jeep.  The leaf springs were upgraded to the wider springs from a 76 model CJ7.  It has front sway bar mounts on the frame, and I have a sway bar for it.  It will need new rod ends and bushings if you plan to install it.  I will also include the stock front bumper if you want it.  You can see pictures of it on the link below.

This Jeep was my daily driver for almost 3 years.  It draws a crowd everywhere you go.  You can’t buy gas or go into Home Depot without someone stopping you to talk about it.  Since it was my daily driver, it has all of the scratches and dings you would expect of a truck used for that period of time.  It runs and drives good.  The four wheel drive works fine.  Since I had to rely on this as my driver, It hasn’t been thrashed off road since built.  The four wheel drive has been used in the snow, pulling trailers out of the muddy pasture, and around the deer lease.

Negative issues:  This is no trailer queen, so it has normal dings and rock chips and scratches that you would expect from a driver.  There is one good dent in the left rear fender well.  I included a picture of it.  The speedometer doesn’t work.  The gas gauge half ass works half the time.  The gauge is new, it needs a sender.  While you are replacing the sender, you could replace the oring on it that leaks gas if you overfill it.  The oil gauge works, but is falling apart.  It needs a new horn switch.  You have to hit just the right spot to make it honk.  If you romp on it in reverse, it will pop out of gear.  Driving sensibly prevents it from happening.  The transfer case shifter needs new bushings, but it shifts fine for me, so I don’t worry about it.  It has a top and doors that need recovering.  I don’t have any pictures of it, but you can see it in the snow video below.

See it run and drive on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5oef9OP4lE

See it play in the snow in four wheel drive http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-P8n3qoWf8

Jeep from Amusement Park Ride on eBay

• CATEGORIES: Features, toys This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  this is back on eBay

This amusement ride jeep weights sixty pounds.

“Jeep Lovers, this is a fantastic find from the early 1950’s. This red Jeep measures 4 ft long and 2 ft wide and easily accomodates a child up to 10 years of age. All original condition, tires, axles, steering, body, even the chain they used to use to strap us in! The Jeep when it was in use, was connected to a center motor by an arm that moved a gang of 6 different Jeeps in a circle with some steering allowed. This is not a peddle car and doesn’t have any power feature of it’s own. Heavy metal construction. A wonderful piece of childhood nostalgia! Very sturdy, steers straight, (no brakes). Very, very rare! Bid with confidence, you’ll be the only ‘kid’ on your block (or state) with one. Research shows they were made from 1950-1952. See you tube video regarding the Kiddie Jeep ride some guy was rebuilding if you’re interested. Available for inspection at Red Rooster, New Braunfels, TX M-Sat 10-6 while auction is open. Available locally so auction could end early to cash-in-hand buyer. Weighs about 60 lbs.”

Rubber Stamp Inkpad with “Jeep” **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Features, Unusual This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on ebay

This seems like an oddity. A rubber stamp inkpad with a Jeep logo added.  Maybe this should have a “Jeep” Stamp, too?

“Vintage Jeep Tampon Pour Timbres Caoutchouc Inkpad, With Tin
Tampon Pour Timbres Caoutchouc translates as “Buffer for rubber stamps,” pour encrer du reencrer votre tampon as “to ink your stamp of reencrer” and l’encre ideale dans le flacon parfait as “the ink bottle in the ideal perfect.”

J. Herbin was established in 1670, when Louis XIV, the Sun King, was 32 years old. M. Herbin was a sailor, and from his many journeys to India he brought back to Paris formulas for manufacturing sealing wax.

His special lacquer formula improved the quality of the seals in adhesion and neatness, helping him to become famous throughout the kingdom.

J. Herbin is also the oldest name in ink production in the world. By 1700, the company was producing “l’Encre de la Tete Noire,” followed by “Perle des Encres,” (The Jewel of Inks) and “l’Encre des Vaisseaux” (The Ink of Ships).

J. Herbin made ink for Louis XIV, and a black ink for the sole use of Victor Hugo, author of the Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Miserables. these formulas still reside in their company headquarters in Paris.”

In good condition with some wear {tattered edges} and soiling. Measures 4 1/2 by 3 inches. Weighs 3 ozs.”

Roof Palomino “mini jeep” Lawn Mower White Plains, NY **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Features, Fire/Police/Industry Vehicles • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.

“Rare ROOF Palomino “mini Jeep” Lawnmower. Good overall condition and very original. Serial #1505 as per tag on hood. These were built from approx 1969 to the early 70’s and were very expensive in their day, hence not too many were sold and not too many left.

This one has been in barn storage for the past 10+ years. It was parked due to no spark; the coil is suspected too be bad, but I haven’t tested it yet. It ran and drove fine before that and was great for putting around the property and moving stuff (beer, parts, people and tools) around the property. It is 40 years old, so despite its good preserved shape, it will need a good service before getting it going.

-Original Kohler k482 motor, seats (with cushioning springs), air cleaner, rims, grille, tailgate, etc, etc..
-Very little rust ( just a little on the outside edges where the floor meets the body in the footwells),
-All mechanical pieces are intact. Rear tires are pretty dry rotted, but I have a nice set of 2 used tires that match the front that come with it. There is some kind of small patch on the right rear corner. Front bumper has had a small hitch added. Motor has good compression and oil pressure; turns right over.
-This originally had a 60″ belt driven mower deck. This one has been stripped of its PTO, engagement and lift levers, as well as the mower deck and its attachment points. NO MOWER OR PARTS for the mower. I have read that the Roof 60 mowers used many of the same parts, but can not confirm that.
– It will need a complete service before being taken out to have fun with! Should be easy to get going again!”
