Beware the “William Cameron” Scam

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: .

Mark alerted me to a scam by a guy named William Cameron. Mark said William called him up claiming he had an FC-150, just what Mark was looking to buy. All Mark had to do was wire him a down payment. Long story short, it was a scam.

It turns out William Cameron is a regular scam artist. He’s even been in jail for it, though no prison time. So, if he calls you, tell him to where he can go ….

Here’s what Mark wrote me:

“He calls, says he has exactly what you need. Sounds very old, but when googling him you find he is only in his 50’s. Same scam always for the most part and he has gone to jail for it. Tells you he can not take any pics. Tells you everything a buyer would ever want to hear. His price is dirt cheap and he says all he needs is a deposit and says you can send the rest later. All the while he is coughing and sounding very old and he says he is retiring to Arizona. Google his name or number along with the words “Craigslist scam” and you would see he has taken advantage of many people.”

A delightful history of the Willys Jeep written in verse. Set in WWII, this is the story of Willis the Jeep and his soldier counterpart Joe as they tend to the chores of freedom. It covers the Willys Jeep’s production history, trials against the horse cavalry at Fort Riley, Kansas and the Jeep’s ultimate replacement of the US horse cavalry as couriers and scouts in wartime. Happy New Year, 2019!!!

• CATEGORIES: Features

Happy New Year everyone!

It was another fun year of travel, jeeps, and interesting posts. Our trip east was a lot of fun and we got to meet a variety of readers along the way. Here’s the final map of our April/May/June trip.

2018-east-coast-trip

Now, anytime we sit at the kitchen table, we can look at the painting Ann bought in Spanish Fork and think fondly of our trip, especially of our flat tire, her lost purse, and that rough first day.

2018-04-30-ann-painting2

HEALTH ISSUES:

Ann’s ongoing ankle and other health problems kept us from traveling much of the rest of the year.  The good news is that we hope that her upcoming surgery in three weeks will fix some female issues that will get he back on track to address her ankle issue.

Dad’s health took a big dip at year’s end. We’ve decided to support him with in-home care, along with family-care, in hopes he doesn’t have to go to a nursing home. His inability to walk at this point (though he can stand) will insure we’ll be around him a lot until his end. Meanwhile, my mother has hip surgery in two days, so the family will have our hands full in January for sure!

I wish I’d had time to get more done on my jeeps in 2018, but time demands and distance kept that from happening. However, rest assured, we do have a plan in place to make that happen.

CHANGES:

The good news is that, eWillys will be around for all of 2019. However, assuming everything happens as we expect, in 2020, probably around April or so, eWillys will transform from a system of daily updates to more of an occasional blog.

In fact, the 2020 FC Roundup will be Jesse’s last one and that will likely be where I will end the daily eWillys reporting as well (at least that’s what I’m telling myself right now). Because of some upcoming, most excellent (stealing Jesse Ybarra’s phrase) changes to our lives, we’ll be moving to a new place where I’ll be able to work on my jeeps and get a couple more.

Even better, our goal is to have the room, facilities, and space to begin hosting an annual vintage jeep event somewhere in the Pacific Northwest (we aren’t sure where exactly we’ll end up). The first year could be in 2020, but more likely in 2021. And, again if everything happens as we expect, that’s just the beginning …. So, stay tuned!

Argentine Monument to Don Carlos Gesell

• CATEGORIES: Features, Monuments/Statues

UPDATE: Thanks to Blaine for locating a video and some pics!! The below video appeared on this website

Below is a brochure for Villa Gesell, a resort city founded by Don Carlos Gesell. The brochure was posted to this page, one that includes many pictures, some with jeeps. That could be Don Carlos himself in the driver’s seat of the jeep, but I can’t possibility say it.

This shows Don Carlo’s former jeep. The buyer of it is seated in the jeep. More information here.

Original Post 12/31/2018: Moncholo Deniz shared these pics of a monument to Don Carlos Gesell, founder of Villa Gesell in Argentina (map & history). The monument includes his dog Fifi. Not sure why the sculpture had to include a shovel in the top bow holders.

I tried to locate pics of Don Carlos in a CJ-2A, but couldn’t find any online.

McCahill’s 1947 Review of the Jeep Station Wagon

• CATEGORIES: Features, Magazine

UPDATE ON ME: Like Lazarus, I have risen once again to rejoin the living! Whoo hoo!

For my first post back, I doubt Willys Overland could have paid a reviewer for a better review of their wagon. This review was featured in the February, 1947 issue of Mechanix Illustrated that I bought off of eBay.

Also, thanks go to several readers who donated funds prior to Christmas. This allowed me to purchase multiple items, including all the brochures/articles featured since Christmas Eve.

Post Alaska Or Rust Item: FCA Brazil’s Video of Hugo Vidal

• CATEGORIES: Alaska Or Rust Trip, Features, videos

<– Day 21 – Saturday May 19th: Mr. Infamous (Alaska Or Rust Presentation)

UPDATE: I’m still sick so no updates. We made it back to Pasco, where we will stay a few days before heading back to Seattle to help with Dad. In the meantime, Luciano updated the video of Hugo below by adding English subtitles for the Portuguese. Enjoy!

Original post November 14, 2018: On Sunday this video debuted at the Premiere Auto Show in Brazil at the Auto Show’s Jeep Booth. It features our good friend and co-Alaska participant Hugo Vidal. It’s mostly in Portuguese, but some is in English. You’ll see both my wife and I appearing in several clips. The title refers to Hugo as the First Citizen of Jeep Nation. Kudos to Luciano Falconi for his great videography.

Hugo also recently published a book on his trip, written in both English and Portuguese. http://www.ewillys.com/…/26/hugo-vidal-has-published-his-b…/

Product Merchandising Manual Circa 1955

• CATEGORIES: Documents, Features

Several months ago a reader purchased a product merchandising manual with over four hundred pages, used by the Willys Motors marketing department. Over the succeeding months, we scanned and assembled this into a PDF. I’m dating it at 1955 because it introduces the new CJ-5. It’s not entirely complete, but there’s lots in it.

I’d like to thank the generous reader for making this available to everyone! I wish everyone the best for 2019!!

More Progress on Paul’s Trailer

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: .
snow-fall-alaska

Photo taken at 9am in Anchorage. Still dark out (sunrise was supposed to occur at 10:12 am, but the clouds kept it dark)

As we begin counting longer days, Paul’s toiling away in his warm and cozy garage as the snow falls, the sun hides, and aftershocks rattle Anchorage.

Paul writes, “Since the earthquake November 30th we’ve had almost 5,000 aftershocks in less than three weeks.  Many of the tremors are too light to feel but we’ve had a few strong shakers that concerned me enough to make a trip to the local hardware store necessary where I purchased additional tie down straps.  The trailer and box assembly is still sitting on two work tables and will remain that way until I finish rolling the upper edge of the trailer box.  I’ll rest easier when I get the trailer frame finished, the axle attached and the box lifted off the work tables and bolted to the frame.”

“The trailer box is riveted together so the next step (after the taillights) is to weld the tubing into a big rectangle to match the upper edge of the side panels and then roll the metal over the tubing and weld as necessary.  I’m not quite sure how I’ll accomplish this task but I expect it’s going to cost more than I planned and take longer to accomplish than I’d intended but that’s normal for this project.”

12-20-2018-tail-light-placement-trailer1

I’ve made 6 or 7 different designs for the taillight/turn signal layout on the M100 trailer but none of them are without problems. Here’s my mockup of the lights mounted to the rear of the trailer. To me they are too close together and would look awkward sticking out from the box.

It would be much easier to position these lights if I went to a smaller size LED light but I want the trailer lights to match the ones I installed on the little Willys so I’m running into location/space issues.

I’ll try again.

12-20-2018-tail-light-placement-trailer4

Here the taillight brackets would be mounted to the trailer sides just forward of the rear corner sections.  They’d be close to but not interfering with the use of the grab handles bolted to the corners.  The housing for the lights would be stainless steel sheet fabricated into a one inch thick box with a removable access panel on the front side.

12-20-2018-tail-light-placement-trailer3

Here are some of the poster board mockups of the tail light housings I’ve made while attempting to achieve a reasonable balance of visibility, secure installation and ease of fabrication.  The first mockups were made from white poster board with line drawings to indicate the light assemblies.

As I refined my design I began coloring in the tail/brake light lens (red) and the turn signal lens (orange) with felt markers to give me a better idea of how these lights would look on the trailer.  I’m pretty sure I’ll use the mockups number 5 and 6 (starting from the first mockup on the left as #1) as the final design so tomorrow I expect to begin cutting sheet metal.
