1959 Article on Ted Bullimer’s Jeep Movie

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images

This article from the April 15, 1959, issue of The Sun (out of Stark County, Ohio) highlights Ted Bullimer’s a second film, “The Four Seasons of Scandinavia”, an exploration of the four seasons in Scandinavian countries. As far as I can tell, it doesn’t have anything to do with jeeps. His first film, a travel-adventure movie “By Jeep Around the World”, shared his world trip in a Wiillys Wagon. Thanks to Merlin for spotting this article.

1959-04-15-the-sun-ohio-ted-bumiller-traveler

Ted’s daughter Elizabeth wrote a book and included an acknowledgement to Ted and his wife Ruth Ann for teaching her how to travel and for inspiring her to explore the world. In it she mentions a third film by Ted, “Eternal India”.

June-July 1956 Willys News

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features • TAGS: .

This issue of Willys News highlighted a new advertising campaign, the “Gets there . . . works there . . .  anywhere!” magazine ads (will highlight those on Thursday). Page 3 has some advertising reprints (lower left pic), showing the diversity of ‘Jeep’ ads (I hope to find examples of all of these for a future post). Also on page three appears to be “NEW LIFE” ads that include concentric circles. Maybe that was a local parts dealer campaign. I’ll have to see if I can find newspaper examples of that campaign from DC newspapers of the time. On Page 2, there’s an image of the Light Rescue Truck, featured in yesterday’s post about the Light Rescue Truck brochure.

Ted Bumiller’s trip around the world was highlighted in this issue as well. More information this trip, including reference to a film about it, can be found in this 2016 film and lecture post.

The Investigators: A Watercolor Illustration

• CATEGORIES: Artists/Drawings, Features

Blaine spotted this watercolor illustration, titled The Investigators, that shows some sailors in a jeep ogling two women standing next to the Greenpernt Grocery. The watercolor sold for $287 at auction in April of 2019. It’s larger than I initially thought at almost 3 feet wide (35.75 inches) and 28.75 inches tall. I could find nothing about an artist named “Sweet”.

The name “Greenpernt” might be a reference Greenpoint in Brooklyn, New York. Apparently, Greenpernt was how Brooklyners referred to the area at one time. As one person wrote on a remembrances page, “My Brooklyn was High School days riding the GG train to Brooklyn Automotive in Greenpoint (Greenpernt to my dad)”.

There’s also a corner of Noble St and West St (note the signs in the illustration) in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, that suggest this corner might have inspired the artist.

Light Duty Rescue Truck Brochure Form W-F56-1

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features

UPDATE: Dan’s got a good thread related these trucks at the Old Willys Forum. The 1956 June-July issue of Willys News included a reference to this vehicle.

I suspect this brochure, Form W-F56-1, was published in 1956, so I’ll republish it here as we are attempting to move through the 1956 brochure year. My guess is that this eight page brochure was a lunch brochure for the light duty rescue truck.

One great thing is that it has a list of all the equipment that is supposed to come with truck, plus a picture showing how it was organized in the back.

1962 Photo of Bob Pearsall Motors Promoting Hatari

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images

UPDATE: Just for kicks, here is a CJ-5 pic from Allpar taken at about the same angle. To me, the CJ-6 seat looks farther away from the spare tire than the Pearsall Motors jeep. The step is also farther away from the rear tire on the blue jeep vs. the Pearsall Motors.

Original Post: Since I posted this, Barney has determined that this is likely a 1963 Tux Park III CJ-5. He reports the following:

“I went to my library and W-1155 particulars for the Mk III show it CJ5 only. The one for the Mk IV printed in 1964 W-1175 show availability as a 5a and 6a.”

“Here’s a classic & very scarce 8″ tall by 10” wide B&W glossy photo from a Chattanooga, Tennessee Jeep dealer advertising the John Wayne movie “Hatari” back in 1962 -Photo features a real photo image of a man (presumably a local radio DJ from WKDA radio named Eddie Kilroy) dressed in safari gear with a pith helmet and rifle seated in an open jeep with signs all over the outside of the vehicle reading: “See and Drive the new Jeep Tornado OHC Powered Bob Pearsall Motors”… “Kilroy is Here! to see Hatari! Starring John Wayne NOW Tennessee Theatre.”… “See and Drive the new Tornado OHC Powered Jeep at Bob Pearsall Motors”… “I’m Eddie Kilroy the great game player from WKDA 1240 on the dial. Follow me to Hatari! at the beautiful Tennessee Theatre”… “See Hatari! Tennessee Theatre. See Jeep Vehicles in Action! Bob Pearsall Motors”

The vehicle is parked in a downtown lot with other billboard signs all around too-The photo has some wear with a minor center crease, but still a neat dual collectible item that will display nicely! How many of these throwaway items survived? This is an ORIGINAL item, NOT A REPRODUCTION item!

April 1956 Willys News

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features • TAGS: .

Regarding the back page article, it’s a bit hard for me to believe that the motorhome the Murray’s built on a truck chassis (with an inline 6?) was capable of sustained cruising of 70 MPH, especially given that modern interstates had yet to be built (the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956––aka Interstate Highway construction bill––hadn’t yet been passed when this issue of Willys News was published).

Overground Railroad Book

• CATEGORIES: Books, Features

A reader (and my pea-sized brain can’t remember who) noticed that the front of the Overground Railroad, a book by Candace Taylor, had a Jeep Wagon on its cover. It looks to be a 1950-1951 wagon to me.

I haven’t read the book just yet, but look forward to it. The book is about 300 pages, but has at least 100 pages of photos. The reviews for it have been very good. Here’s a review from a Route 66 website.

Jeep-shaped Lighters

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: .

UPDATE: Dennis noted that the was a CJ-5-shaped lighter. I was able to find a picture of one, but it is unclear to me how it works.

japanese-cj5-jeep-lighter

======================

Original Post: I just returned from a quick trip to Seattle, so limited updates today.

While there, I picked up three different sizes of Jeep lighters (thanks to Dan)! I plan to keep one of each and will sell some of the others. I tried to price these on eBay, but none of these are currently on eBay.

The largest one is particularly cool (far right). To ignite it, you collapse the steering wheel; the fire shoots out the hood. I’ll get a video of it tomorrow. The smaller ones are surprisingly heavy.

jeep-lighters1 jeep-lighters2 jeep-lighters3

There’s another, similar version of the smaller jeep lighters above that’s an LRDG jeep model. You can see one pic below and more pics of that jeep here: http://www.ewillys.com/2020/01/08/jeep-cigarette-lighter-on-ebay/

jeep-lighter-4

The jeep-shaped lighter (and ashtray) I run cross most often for sale is the German Walter Baier type, which apparently was only sold on US Bases in Germany after the war (I have no documentation of that, other than this info was part of an eBay ad). Here’s a good example of the lighter:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Walter-Baier-Aluminum-Willy-Jeep-Lighter-Holder-Ashtray-West-German/293491239068?

1948 Article on Elk Hunting with a CJ-2A

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images

I wish the pic and caption were better reproduced in this scanned newspaper, but the December 02, 1948, article in Montana’s Choteau Acantha newspaper demonstrates how surprised some civilians were by the jeep’s capabilities. The writer mentions Black Leaf Canyon, which is south of Glacier National Park.
