UPDATE: **SOLD** at auction for $37,440

“Chassis no. 37594

Although forever associated with Willys-Overland, the original Jeep military vehicle was developed by American Bantam, formerly American Austin. Designed to meet the US Army’s requirement for a rugged, go-anywhere, four-wheel-drive vehicle capable of surviving on the barest minimum of unskilled maintenance, Bantam’s prototype Jeep was up and running by 1940, meeting the US Army’s requirements apart from the engine, which was deemed insufficiently powerful. The Pentagon, though, doubted Bantam’s ability to meet the military’s post-Pearl Harbor demands so the major contracts went to Willys – the only other firm that had submitted a tender – and the Ford Motor Company, which would be responsible for the Jeep’s trademark slotted radiator grille.

Willys made various modifications to take advantage of a revised maximum weight requirement, which meant it was able to use its relatively heavy but adequately powerful ‘Go Devil’ engine. It was in this revised form that the Jeep would enter volume production. Willys-Overland’s final production version was the Model MB, Ford’s being designated the Model GPW.

There were subtle differences between the two versions, Ford’s having its components marked with the letter ‘F’. After extensive field testing, the Jeep’s off-road capability was first publicly demonstrated early in 1941 when one was driven up the steps of the United States Capitol by Willys’s test driver, Irving ‘Red’ Haussman. Produced by the million, the ubiquitous Jeep saw service in every theater of the Second World War and continued in military service with armies world-wide for several decades thereafter. Today the Jeep remains highly sought after by discerning military vehicle enthusiasts.

This fully equipped GPW was the recipient of a frame-off restoration and has traveled only 750 miles since. Finished in USMC drab green with Navy/USMC markings, its has everything one could possibly need to storm Omaha, or East Hampton, beach. If the cell service is poor, fear not as a full radio, with microphone, speaker, headphones, antenna, and storage bag is installed on the driver side gunnel. When the going gets rough (or it cools off in the evening and a fire pit is needed), just grab the axe, shovel, rope, and jack stand to get the job done. And should an opposing group require some extra convincing, one need only point out the presence of the M31C machine gun mount with M1919A4 cradle or the M1 Garand (stock only, though) stowed in its leather scabbard along the windscreen.”

Some assembly required.

“Up for sale is my 1943 ford gpw army jeep. I got it from a friend about 3 years ago, but haven’t done anything with it, so it needs to go to a new home. He had started restoration on it, but had stopped due to other interests. It is partially disassembled and would need a full restoration. The body was sandblasted and the metal is nice. You would look for quite some time to find sheetmetal on a gpw as solid as this one is.The engine block and head are marked gpw., and most of the sheetmetal parts are marked “F”. The engine turns over, and before I bought it i pulled the head to see what condition the motor was in. The cylinder walls were good with little wear. Most of the parts are there. The price is $5000 cash, or I would be willing to trade for a 1930-31 model a ford coupe in comparable condition. No lowballers or tire kickers please as I know what the gpw’s are going for right now. If it was an mb it would be worth a third less. If interested call (806)372-9033. And as always local pickup and cash only!”

Lynn’s 1943 GPW

• CATEGORIES: Builds, GPW (Ford MB) This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Paul wrote to say that a friend of his brought this GPW by for a look.

Paul writes, “My friend Lynn stopped by a few days ago to show me his most recently purchased Jeep.  It’s a 1943 Ford, in pretty solid shape considering the fact it’s been parked outside under a spruce tree for many years.  Lots of spruce needles covering the inside of the tub, the usual rust in the floors along with dents and dings but a pretty darn complete 69 year old Jeep.  Also included with this Jeep (but stored in the tow vehicle for the trip home) were both front seats and the folding rear seat.  Numerous parts are stamped with the letter F and all three data plates are still attached to the glove box door.  Not only did the neighbors come over to eyeball the Jeep when it was parked in front of the house but Lynn mentioned on the way home while stopped in traffic and while in a parking lot folks were wanting to look the Jeep over and some even tried to buy it.  Anyway, this old Ford arrived safely at it’s new home where a pressure wash will remove the grime and plant residue and allow a more in depth inspection of this steel soldier.”

• CATEGORIES: Body Parts, GPW (Ford MB) This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  **SOLD** Was $500

This includes a grille and fenders.

“I’m selling a 1942 Willys Jeep tub with title. Tub is a GPW which is very similar to an MB. This was a trail Jeep that I dismantled in order to use most of the parts on a different Jeep. Being a trail Jeep it has more than it’s fair share of bumps, bruises and modifications. Use your own drivetrain and axles and make a cool rock crawler or sand Jeep. If you’re looking for a Jeep to restore to original condition, I’m sure you can find a better candidate than this one.
Provide your name and phone number in your e-mail or I will not respond.
This is what is included:
Tub, fenders, hood, grill, headlights, 12 gallon RCI fuel cell, frame, title with registration good until September. After September it will be on non-op status.
Here are some of the things that are not included:
Engine, tranny, transfer case, axles, windshield. I do have a few miscellaneous items I could throw in depending on what you need for whatever you’re going to make of it.
The title stays with the tub and frame. I’m not selling any of the parts separately at this time. And just to save us all some time, the no haggle price is $500. No trades or other offers will be considered.
Provide your name and phone number in your e-mail or I will not respond.
More pictures available.”

UPDATE:  **SOLD** Was on eBay.

The seller also has a few more things, such as 5 combat rims for $500, that he will sell to the winner of this auction.

“Offered to the highest bidder, this WWII-era Ford manufacturered GPW 1/4t Utility Vehicle (JEEP) serial number 125,686 with a build date of 7 June 1943.  Perfectly restorable tub and frame with the complete running gear from the transmission back along with plenty of “F” marked parts.  The serial numbers of the tub and frame match along with the title so all that’s missing is the original motor.  The front floor and lower firewall to include the axe patch , radio junction box and the radiator crossmember need replacement but from the machine gun mount back it’s sold including the hatchannels, tool box wells and back bumper.  I have not inspected the transmission, transfercase or drive lines and pumpkins for functionality but I assume they will clean up nicely once all the road debris and accumulation of grease and dirt has been wire-wheeled off.”

UPDATE:  **SOLD** Was $5000

Looks like some rust on the driver’s side, but otherwise appears pretty solid.

“This is a 1943 Ford GPW I picked up in 2008 with intentions to restore. I don’t have the time it needs and need to clear up a little space. The pictures show it needs some body work. We have a new fuel pump for the Jeep that goes with it. It comes with the windshield, a rare back seat. The fuel tank leaks and we tried getting it fixed. The engine is free and the seller put fuel in the carburetor to fire it up and it turned over in 2008. Buyer will have to apply for a lost title on this vehicle. I do have the bill of sale around from the auction it was purchased”

1942 GPW Crawford, CO **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: GPW (Ford MB) • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  **SOLD** Winning bid was $4000.

This no reserve auction has already reached a bid price of $3500.  It has no motor.

You are bidding on a rare 1You are bidding on a rare 1942 ford script gpw jeep. This ford jeep has the willys frame with gpw serial number stamped on it which to my understanding is rare as ford used willys frames only in February and March of 1942. The serial number is ( gpw 5204 ) the frame, data plate and title all match, Date of delivery is 3-10-42 . I have a clear Colorado title for the jeep.

Unfortunately the engine was removed so the jeep does not come with a motor. I do however have a completely rebuilt civilian flat head 4 cylinder that the winning bidder can purchase if they so choose.

The transmission is an original T-84, I have taken it apart cleaned, sandblasted and primed it. I bought some new bearings, seals, small parts kit and a few other things to rebuild the transmission, its ready to put back together.

The transfer case I took apart and cleaned, It still has the original OD on it so I decided not to sand blast it. The emergency brake pad is in great shape. I bought seals and bearings for it and its also ready to be put back together.

Seat frames, front fenders, head lights, marker lights, radiator, body handles, ax bracket, leaf springs, axles, U bolts, and a lot of bolts are stamped F along with much much more.

The steering wheel is original and in great condition with no cracks.
Speedometer looks really nice
Comes with 3 combat wheels
has original exhaust pipe and muffler
original drive shafts

very nice windshield frame with the hardware to mount the canvas top, no cracks in the glass ether.

the frame is in great shape but does need a new rear bumper as part of it was cut off.

The body is in good shape with a very nice Ford script on the back. The brace under the passenger seat has some rust coming through on top of the floor but under neath is almost perfect, in front of that is very nice and solid with no rust. The rear floor does have some gone through rust in it so will probably need replaced or patched up. tool boxes are in good shape, there is a little gone through rust where the ax handle goes and the fuel tank sump should probably be replaced. Other than that the body is very nice and has the patina look to it….”
