Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. This MB is located at the Cole Land Transporation Museum in Bangor, Maine, and has an interesting history. According to the museum’s website, “his 1945 jeep served with the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe. After the war, it was given to the French government (French nomenclature in still on the dashboard). It was rebuilt by the French, declared surplus, and shipped to Duryea Motors, Brockport, New York in 1982. Galen Cole purchased it for display in the Museum.
Perhaps its greatest claim to fame is that the mold for the Maine World War II Veterans Memorial, located on the Museum’s grounds, was formed around this jeep; therefore, the jeep that is the focus of the Memorial is an exact replica of this jeep. It was chosen as the symbol of WWII because personnel of all branches of the service during that war used jeeps-whether generals, admirals, or privates.”

“I have a late production MB for sale… July 10th delivery date on dash plate with matching frame tag serial number. Still has T-84 military tranny….postwar civilian replacement engine. Has not run in two years. Engine will roll over. not siezed up…may be the original horn still mounted under hood….No gas tank…someone had cut out a hole on drivers side panel to fit a CJ gas tank fill neck.. Did not come with original front seats…Back panel uncut. there is some extra holes in body and holes that have been filled in some places.The body looks to be in fairly good shape as well as the frame…..This would be a good jeep for restoration. $4500.00 with the military tires on civilian rims and MB rear seat, or $4000.00 without seat and will put back on the wheels and tires that it came with.”

“1942 Willy’s MB Serial# 125537 directly from The Pacific theater. This is an older restoration showing wonderful patina on the paint with that “been there look”. No rust or holes in the usual places.. Engine block# is 220099 and has been previously rebuilt. 12 Volt system (alternator). Additionally, equipped with lifting rings front and rear. Perfect running condition. Vehicle has been fitted with a new carburetor, intake/exhaust manifolds, (NOS) complete exhaust, flywheel, Pressure plate, Clutch, throw out bearing, fork/linkage, new Transmission (Including Case) Rebuilt Transfer case, new Temp, oil pressure and ammeter gauges. (03/05/2009) “1942 jeep universal with original 4 cylinder engine and 3 speed 4×4. New steel body and engine overhaul in 1980’s. Used very little and garaged since the 1980’s. It could just be my imagination, but that body looks like it could has more of a swoop for the passenger entrance similar to a pre-MB. This is worth a closer look.

Here’s a slatgrille that could stand to be dropped down. The body and grille appear in good condition. This might be salvageable.

(08/30/09) This looks like an old school flattie with the aluminum cast slot rims. The cage looks solid and the updates sound perfect for an offroad, onroad jeep.
