Let’s Try the Book Launch Next Week

• CATEGORIES: News

Ann re-proofed the book over the last couple days and found a handful of minor errors. Rather than push the book with those errors, I’m uploading the new version, which will delay the launch. So, I will formally announce it next week once Createspace approves the PDF file. Thanks for your patience1

Bickleton, Trout Lake, and Beyond to Seattle

• CATEGORIES: Features, News

UPDATE: Steve noted that we passed Trout Lake, not Troutdale. Given our successful drive, I can verify his correction 🙂

Ann and I are traveling to Seattle today, but instead of taking our usual route over Snoqualmie Pass, we decided to do some exploring while the weather is nice.

So, we plan to go along the southern area of the state through some towns (Bickleton, Glenwood, and Troutdale) where neither of us has explored. From Troutdale we plan take forest road 23, which winds through the Cascade Mountains, to Randle. We thought this would be a good opportunity to explore the area for future camping trips.

To give some perspective, normally it is a three hour, 173 mile, trip from Pasco to Randle. Given we’ll be stopping, driving slowly, etc, we be much longer.

Here’s our expected path. The dotted lines from Bickleton, where there is a carousel museum of some kind, indicates a cutoff we hope to make to Highway 97 and Satus Pass. There we want to have lunch at St. Johns Bakery. It’s a well regarded food stop in the middle of nowhere that’s part of the St. John Monastery.

I’ll report on Saturday night if we made it (or not report if we didn’t make it out . . . lol)

Worst Car in the History of the World Contest

• CATEGORIES: News

Anybody catch the latest episode of Top Gear called Worst Car in the History of the World? (Well, at least the latest one in the States). It was put out in the UK sometime in late 2012 I believe. Anyway, they entered a Mahindra CJ-5-40 into their ‘worst car in the history of the world’ contest. Of course, they tested it on pavement and in a drag race, but neglected to remind readers it was built as an Offroad vehicle. Now, I know the producers were probably just having some fun, but, still . . .

Here is a brief clip (only a preview — can’t find the full video on the net yet).

Thanks to Dennis Decklever for locating a much, much nice picture from a CJ-3B Page article about John Carroll’s ‘Beer Truck’. The folks at Top Gear called it a CJ-540 (which, to be frank, I thought they’d made up as I’d never heard of that model). Sure enough, the body and chassis is from that vehicle.  The remainder is a mix of parts.

The CJ3B Page photo was shot on the beach at Weston Super Mare in England by Derek Goard. Ros Woodham was driving.

A Couple Days Near Mt. Rainier

• CATEGORIES: News

I’ve caught up on a few things, but am still behind on eWillys. So, just a few posts tonight. More tomorrow. Also, I ordered the book proofs AND purchased www.amberpanels.com (not sure why I didn’t think to purchase that domain name sooner).

We had two blue-sky days of camping at Ohanapecosh and ZERO cell reception! The second night was a little noisy, thanks to a visit by the local Boys and Girls Club at two nearby camping spots. Oh well, at least it was pretty! Here are a few photos.

2013-08-12-mtrainier-trip1

This photo op was taken on the west side of White Pass heading toward Rainier. That’s Zollie (aka Mr. Personality) in my arms. He’s 1/2 dog and 1/2 . . . cat?

2013-08-12-mtrainier-trip2

Here’s our campsite with all of the National Park behind us (plus a few bears, too). I married into that bed . . . yes, we may camp, but we sleep comfortably!

2013-08-12-mtrainier-trip6

I was having some fun taking pictures. No shortage of trees to shoot. I liked the way this tree fell perfectly straight, but bent with the uneven ground.

2013-08-12-mtrainier-trip4

I was looking up from my camp chair and thought this would be a great shot. 30 photos later and I think I got it :-)

2013-08-12-mtrainier-trip7

Zollie is pretending to be a dog, but that didn’t last long. He got to the beach and warmed himself. He didn’t like the idea of swimming. The river is crystal clear at this point . . . beautiful!

2013-08-12-mtrainier-trip8

There used to be a bridge that spanned from the top of the bare spot on the right to an unseen spot to my left. It was washed out in 2006 and never replaced. It used to be a great trout spot, but they don’t stock it any more I was told.

2013-08-12-mtrainier-trip3

Here I am strumming my six string . . . my attempt to keep the bears away . . . and drown out the noise from the G&B Club kids.

No Updates Sunday

• CATEGORIES: News

Well, I’d planned to do updates for Sunday, but an unexpected dinner of Thai food with Ann’s grandfather put me into a food coma, which led to some sound sleeping.

Today I expect to complete the last full edit review of the new book. Forty pages have been slashed, some logic improved, a little back history added, errors corrected, and explanations clarified. I expect to order a proof version monday morning and, if all is correct, announce it is ready for sale by mid-next week.

Updates Mid Wednesday

• CATEGORIES: News

Ann and I had a ‘date night’ Tuesday night, so I didn’t get anything done.

Early Friday morning I plan to head for Portland where I’ll drop by the MVPA convention. I’ll spend a few hours there and then head north (via Herm’s place if he’s around — still have to call him). I’ll be in Seattle for at least a week. During the first week of August I’ll be dropping by the FC Event in Tacoma.

I’m half done tightening up the book (have dropped about twenty pages) and cleaned up bad transitions, dealt with a few logic problems, and fixed a variety of errors.

No Updates Tonight

• CATEGORIES: News

No updates tonight.

I will be in Seattle for a week or more at the end of July, beginning of August. I’m pulling Biscuit’s engine and replacing the TH350 tranny for a T-18 (still have to locate that). I’ll also be dropping by the Northwest FC Get Together in Tacoma in early August.

On my way to Seattle, I was hoping to drop by the MVPA’s international convention in Portland (July 25-27th), but now am not sure whether I’ll have the time or not. Anyone going to that?
