These were used only by the USMC. Like a mini-Hummer H1 HMMWV. Aluminum body, 4-wheel independent suspension, inboard brakes, limited slip differentials front and rear. Built by AMC.

Air-cooled V4 engine. 4 speed transmission. 4-wheel-drive. Neat little 4×4.

“For sale. 1984 AMC Jeep CJ8 Alaskan postal version (right hand drive!!!). It has an inline 258 6-cylinder and is an automatic (very rare for older jeeps) 4×4. Floor shift with floor-mounted, hand-operated emergency brake. It fires right up, does run smoothly and drive, but needs some TLC. The left front fender is dented; there is some rust in the right side front rocker; and the driver’s (right side) floor pan will need replacing. It also slips a little in second. No rust in tub, wheel wells or reinforced frame. Still has AMC/Jeep mud flaps attached.

Here in the U.S., the Cj-8 Scrambler was marketed mainly as workman like pickup. The Alaskan postal service ordered 230 Cj-8s equipped with the world cab , side opening “barn door” and insulating foam sprayed in the entire cargo area to ensure the mail indeed did get delivered. This jeep is still 85% USPS complete and would make a great candidate for a full postal restoration. You can see where the old USPS stripes and logos were, as well as the USPS unit number on the front windshield and back door. “Selling a custom built Willys Jeep look a like. Whole body was handmade, narrowed Jeep grille, frame is a 1962 military Mule. 4 wheel steer, hydro stat drive, forward/reverse, 16hp Briggs V twin engine, runs good and fires right up, has a choke ran into the cab, 12v system, working headlights and tail lights and siren. Has misc ammo cans, boxes, shovel, extinguisher, etc. Pretty cool little rig. Add a mirror, blinkers and triangle and drive it around. It’s not fast by any means(around 10mph) but very unique, well built, not a hack job. Perfect for parades, tooling around the campsite, whatever. This does not have a title, it’s a homebuilt unit.
