Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. Even contacted me from Norway with a nice bit of history about the Jeepy Pedal Car. Thanks Even!
He writes, “As world war 2 came to a close a Norwegian engineer name Sigurd W. Ødegaard was looking for products he could produce in his mecanical workshop. One day during the summer of 1945 he was watching a military parade with a lot of jeeps when he got the idea to produce a small version of a jeep as a pedal car. A year later he produced his first pedal car, manufacturing them from 1946 until 1952. During this time his company made about 3000 units of this popular car . I was told they cost almost 100$ back then.
These small Jeeps are popular among collectors here in Norway and since Sigurd made them very solid there are still some around. The car is 1/3 scale from the GPW and are all steel with air filled wheels.
I have also heard that Sigurd W. Ødegaard was educated in the US and worked for Mack International Motor Company. At some point he travelled to the US to start production of this pedalcar over there, but returned to Norway after failing to get production going because the Korean War made it complicated to get enough steel for the pedal cars.”

If you visit the Illinois State Museum in Springfield, Illinois, and have kids, make sure to stop by the Mary Ann MacLean Play Museum in the basement of the building. Here’s a pic of it form the State Journal-Register and a story, too.
Not a perfect replica, but looks solid.

“For sale is a one of a kind “Willys high hood” replica Jeep go cart. I custom built the body out of 20 gauge sheet metal with an inner steel support frame. It’s based on a riding lawn tractor frame and running gear, with hydrostatic forward and reverse drive. I changed out the drive pulleys so it goes plenty fast now. The motor is a 16 horsepower 2 cylinder that runs great. Comes complete with functional head and running lights. It’s all around a fun go kart. Perfect for your kids, grandkids, parades or to cruise around hunting camp. You could even put the mower deck back on it and be the envy of your neighborhood!! I never thought of an Autoshow as a good place for kids, but apparently in 2006 DaimlerChrysler was all prepared for them.

I had one of these that towed with a string all over the place.

I ran across this pedal jeep today. I looked through some of the pedal cars at the CJ-3B Page, but didn’t see anything similar. Anyone know what kind it is?

Friction powered Jeep, front wheel drive, runs smooth and strong. Red, white and blue body color. 16” long (408 mm). c. mid to late 1950’s. Marked made in Japan. Missing nothing. Great vintage American Airline logo and graphics lithographed throughout indicating “AIRPORT SERVICE CAR”.”
I have never seen one of these.
“You are bidding on a 1950’s soft rubber Willys-Jeep utility truck made by the Auburn Rubber company in the U.S.A. It measures 5″ long and is about 2″ wide. It has black wheels and is a light red in color. There are different men’s faces in both the driver’s and passenger windows. It is in good, used vintage condition with a little rust on the wheels.”

” have for sale an old windup toy called the Jumpin Jeep by Marx.. It is tin and from the late 1940’s after the war. It has been well played with and does have quite a bit of rust. The jeep, the front tires and one large tire isn’t that bad and the lithograph design is in good condition with minor rust. There is one large tire that needs to be replaced or repainted. The toy looks as though it was left outside laying on its side with one back tire perhaps in the dirt for some time. The bottom of the toy also shows signs of rust. The key is still present but it has been overwound. It moves a little but I can’t wind it. Overall I would rate it good simply because the lithos are still in pretty decent shape. The size of the toy is 5 1/2″ long about 4 1/2″ tall and 4″ wide from back tire to back tire”

This gas powered replica is made by Junior Replicas (A branch of the FAO Schwartz) and features a fold flat windshield, full suspension, brakes, electric start, working headlights, strobe lights, mini NDT tires (just like the real thing!) 5hp Honda engine, and a forward / reverse transmission. This sweet little Jeep even has a variable speed limiter to keep the top speed of the vehicle contained for younger drivers and adjust it as they grow. The safety shift lever prevents breakage of the gears and keyways so inexperienced drivers do not damage the engine or transmission components. Speaking of unique Surreys, Mike wrote the following Comment:
“Back in 1962, One of my dad’s favorite hangouts, Lee’s tavern on Crooks Ave. in Clifton, NJ bought a special order CJ5 with a pink surrey fringe top and matching upholstery. It was the talk of the town. This Jeep was a double twist on the phrase “special order”. It was a first generation Tuxedo Park model with the featured color scheme of white body with red grille and red wheels, along with the surrey top and seat covers which were installed over stock upholstery at the factory. The local legend story at the time was; He had to wait 6 months for delivery.”
So, I spent some time searching for a CJ-5 Surrey picture. I didn’t find any real ones, but I did find one toy: A CJ-5 toy from 1960.
