Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. (02/25/2014) The dogs look in surprisingly good shape. The tires on the trailer aren’t so good. This may include an overdrive, based on the ‘4 levers’ comment.

Cort wondered if anyone knows the manufacturer of this trailer. It appears to be a cross between a Ben Hur (the sides are Ben Hur-esque) and a Sterling Machine & Mfg trailer (note how the interior of the top rim slopes into the trailer).
From 1941-1945, the Ben Hur (G-518) trailer was built by numerous companies (according to this page), including American Bantam, Ben Hur, Century Boat Works, Checker, Dorsey, Gertenslager, Henney, Hercules Body, Highland Body & Trailer, Hobbs, Hyde, Mifflinburg Body, Naburs, Nash Kelvinator, Omaha Standard Body, Pke, Queen City, Redman, Steel Products, Strick, Transportation Equipment Corp, Truck Engineering Corporation, Willys Overland, Winter Weiss, Baker, Covered Wagon Co., Keystone, And Streich. When the war ended, some of the companies must have had extra trailer parts. My theory is that this could be an early prototype of the Sterling Machine trailer, but build from left over Ben Hur parts. After fiddling with designs and/or using up the leftover Ben Hur parts, maybe Sterling decided to make the trailer smaller (see the green example below).
UPDATE: The XM-384 seems to be both a Mutt variant prototype along with the trailer. Leo found these photos that include the Mutt variant with its trailer. He found the photos on G503.
Steve spotted this unique trailer. According to the seller, this is a one-of-a-kind trailer. It was manufactured by Detroit Arsenal and built from aluminum.

“The floor has some rusts along the front, but overall the trailer is solid and useable. It needs fenders, and a hitch and new tires. But it has its original Bantam tag, which looks to be SERIAL 2xx6. According to the owner I bought it from, it hasnt been registered in decades. No title. Bill of Sale only. Sold as-is. You’ll need to pick up with a truck (full-size bed) or a utility trailer.”

“Up for auction, 1946 Willys CJ2A Jeep with a Bantam Trailer BARN FIND. This little Willys is in good shape with some rust, she does run but a little rich, she will need the carb tuned up. The battery is no good, she drives, shifts in high low and all of the gears and stops. She needs a new home, you see I’m in the National Guard and will be attending a lengthy resident course, so she doesn’t need to be sitting in the Barn for another year. Someone needs to restore her and enjoy taking weekend rides in the summer. She is civilian, but has some military items that come with her, such as a Jerry can with spout, extra (3) non directional tires, shovel, fuel can mount, spare tire mount, machine gun mount, two military tool boxes and I will even throw in an old army field desk. I have an old school bus seat that I was going to cut down and use as a back seat that comes with her. All the tires are holding air and in decent shape. The Bantam trailer is also a restoration project, does have a new tail light and the tongue stand is with her. I always wanted to get this project going and put these two items together, I think it would be pretty fun, but out of time and my military career and retirement take priority.”

“This was the first year of the Jeep .Only 1,550 made in 1941 . This jeep served in WWII in the European theater. This jeep was restored and some parts have been updated..The motor ,trans,transfer case and Axles have been rebuilt in the last 3 years .Trailer is missing the landing leg.”
We are hoping someone recognizes the type of camper on this Willys Truck. It looks like it was built for Willys trucks it fits so well. Below the color photos are a couple of black and white photos showing a similar but slightly different example.

“1953 Willys Military M38A1 Jeep, comes with a trailer and a 53-55 CJ with good drivetrain for parts.
The M38 has new brakes, tires, fuel tank, floor, and a lot more.

“This is a 1962 Willys Jeep and trailer. The Jeep is in good condition and has a 4 cylinder engine. The Jeep has been mostly used in parades. The top and heater are included, but not installed. “I have decided to sell my 1953 M38A1 Military Jeep and M416 Trailer. Jeep runs and drives fine…. It has new Batteries, New Canvas Top, New Seats, The front brakes have been converted to 9″ drums and it will stop on a dime…The front tie rods have been replaced… It has a tow bar that goes with it….. Lights work… It still has the 24 volt system, but has a 12 volt ignition system.. It has had some rust issues in the past and the floor has been patched over, and there are some places that still need repaired…. “I have for sale a 49 Willys Jeep that I found rotting in a field in the country and a Bantam trailer from the same era. I have a clear title for the Willys but do not have a title for the trailer. The price is for the Jeep and the trailer, for additional money($500) I have an aluminum cab enclosure with doors(rare option)
The floor pan need to be replaced as well as other issues(I have some really nice pans to go with it we ordered for another project that didn’t fit so this is some nice metal you can cut to fit-see pic)

If you are a Willys Purest come save this old girl before I put the tub on another frame and make a rat rod out of it with a black smoke puffing diesel motor hanging out of the front of it! “Great little trailer to pull behind a jeep cj, wrangler, or other small 4×4. High clearance great for carrying firewood or camping gear.
Works great. New tires, wheel bearings, taillight, etc.
Only surface rust, it has spent its life in the desert and is easily restorable.
1946 Bantam T3-C, this is a civilian trailer (came with tailgate and ball hitch). Still has original id tag and trailer number.”

A rough and ready elk-pulling-capable jeep. Includes trailer.
“1947 Willys for sale with registered homemade trailer. Replaced orig Flathead 4 engine with 1973 Ford Pinto 2.0 (L) engine. Has the original 3 spd transmission and 2 spd transfer case. Has a 1500 LBS wench on the front bumper, and a full canvas top. The trailer is used for towing the Jeep or, with the stake sides installed, hauling whatever will fit. Used as a hunting rig (IS NOT registered) until replaced with quads. Now it is used to move toys around.”

“Selling my beloved 1947 Willys CJ2A. I’ve been plowing my driveways with this for almost ten years, before that it sat abandoned in the woods for about 35 years. It looks the same now as it did then, I have the pics to prove it! Always starts even in sub zero weather. Plow and four wheel drive work good. Clutch is good, lights work. Nothing made in China here folks, just old American iron made when men were men and women loved them! Charging system works, beacon works. No brakes or paperwork. Use it or restore it. The ultimate 1950’s adventure package with all the vintage aftermarket additions; Sears aluminum cab, Braden power take-off winch with half inch cable, Warren hubs, 2nd gas tank under the passengers seat, and block heater. Includes a Bantam Trailer Corp. munitions type trailer, originally designed with the same wheels and rims to pair with the CJ. This trailer has a fabricated aluminum covered top. There are a total of 8 original rims with vintage bias-ply tube tires in great condition. Other additions include removable rear seat, handy man jack, CB radio set (with 12 to 6 volt converter), spotlight, conventional AM radio, vintage metal ice chest, and 7 vintage metal jerry cans. The vehicle spent more than fifty of it’s years living in the comfort of a garage. The upholstery is in great shape but the foam liner on the inside of cab has deteriorated.
The engine was rebuilt in 1963 by a precision motor shop in Denver where it had the crankshaft plated in hard chrome, all the moving parts were matched and balanced. In 1979 both the front and rear axles were fitted with positraction differentials. The original spider gear parts are still in good shape and included with jeep. A full set of chains is also included. The performance of The Little Red Jeep with positraction and chains in difficult situations is very impressive.”
