“Totally restored from frame up in 1997-98. All original drivetrain and body. Has all ambulance accessories such as both original stretcher racks, reel light, seats, complete NOS top with original doors, wheel well pads, etc. One of the few complete ambulance version M170’s around.

Drives and stops as it should. 24 volt system. All lights work. The only things wrong are the non-working temp gauge, tranny sometimes jumps out of second gear (a common issue with older Jeeps), and there is a “tick” in the clutch area that has no effect on the clutch or tranny shifting correctly. Just showed up several years ago and hasn’t had any effect on performance. Steering stabilizer added in 1998 to stop shimmy that occurred over hard bumps. No problem since.

Award winner and has been on cover of Military Vehicles Magazine and featured in Antique Truck magazine.

Registered in CT. bill of sale only.

This is a rare jeep model with only approx. 5000 made. This one has all the hard to find M170 parts and accessories. Very hard to find complete.”

January 1950 Popular Mechanics Article on Tinkertown

• CATEGORIES: Features, Fire/Police/Industry Vehicles, Unusual • TAGS: , , .

UPDATE: Jerry contacted me about a locomotive jeep he would like to restored (see near bottom). He noted that it was used at Tinkertown and found this older post while hoping to learn more. So, this post is a complete redo of an early post that focused just on photos in a January 1950 issue of Popular Mechanics.

It is probably no surprise that the Los Angeles metroplitan area was a hotbed of theme parks and carnivals following World War II. In particular, there was Beverly Park, which is claimed to be the park that stimulated Disney’s interests in theme parks.

One of those carnivals was a traveling kiddie carnival called Tinkertown. Articles show it existed at least from 1950 through 1952, operating in Monrovia, Wilmington, Los Angeles, and other LA area towns.

1951-12-06-wilmington-daily-press-tinkertown-carnival-lores

December 06, 1951, Wilmington Daily Press, Wilmington, California. Tinkertown Kiddie Carnival announcement.

Tinkertown appears to have owned, at one time or another, at least four unusual jeeps. One was a fire jeep made from a CJ-2A, shown below in red.

A second jeep appeared to have been a stretched (probably surplus) WWII jeep made into some kind of fire jeep used to tow a small Ferris wheel.

The article above refers to the jeep as a “fire engine”; perhaps it was modified during WWII? Here’s a better image:

1950-01-popular-mechanics-stretched-jeep-lores

A third jeep-related setup was a train possibly made from a jeep (or jeep-engine-powered at the very least). It is pictured here:

The fourth known jeep was a jeep turned into a locomotive. It’s the one Jerry now owns (along with two of the tram cars), one he’d like to restore. It’s in surprisingly complete condition. He’s hoping to learn more about the manufacturer and/or Tinkertown. Here’s a photo of his train:

Here’s how it looked in 1950:

“This Jeep has an engine from a 1953 Jeep, so it is not the original flathead. It runs good but the brakes are not working. The Jeep has spent all but the last few years in north Texas. It has some rust, as you’d expect. I bought it from a friend of mine and he threw in another motor, an engine block, and some other parts. I was planning to work on this, but I’ve not touched it in three years. It needs to go to someone who will give it the attention it needs.
I have the original title and many years of subsequent registration receipts. It’s a great window of history.”

1963 CJ-3B Wheat Ridge, CO $7500

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3B

No pics provided. Pics will require unpacking the jeep from the garage, but, to be fair, I am not sure how a person is supposed to evaluate it without being able to see it?

https://denver.craigslist.org/cto/d/wheat-ridge-sort-of-barn-find-1963/7157764682.html

“Hi, inherited my father’s 1963 CJ3B High Hood Jeep.
It has an honest 70XXX miles on it.
Dad never washed it after taking elk hunting for several years and it was badly rusted.
I got a new body – stamped from the original dies, I think it was made in the Philippines.
I had it professionally mounted and painted in the original baby blue. The shop that did to work did an excellent job of transferring every single little piece over. If you did not know, It looks absolutely original.
I started to fix it up and life changed. It continues to change and I think the smart move is to let it go.
A vehicle is a tough thing to hang onto for sentimental reasons.
It has not been started since about 2004. It’s sitting on flat tires, the seats are totally shot. The top is old but in very good shape.
It is sort of buried in the garage, except I never ever set stuff on it – or even leaned anything against the new ( now well cured from 2004 ish) paint.
If your a serious possible buyer, please let me know. I can help you get it out if we go forward.
Because of how it is in the garage, it would be nearly impossible to get pictures. Don’t ask.
Just reply if you’re seriously interested. Low ball bullshit will be ignored”
