Gone Camping

• CATEGORIES: News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

THURSDAY UPDATE II: Wednesday night we stayed at the Maryhill State Park, which is nestled next to the Columbia River. Unfortunately, it’s also next to a train track; and, across the river from a second train track and I-84; and at the bottom of a long hill down which semi-trucks travel using their air brakes all night. For a pretty spot kind of in the middle of nowhere it was noisy, way too noisy!!

So, we are heading to another campground, this one a primitive place in the middle of Oregon. There are no train tracks, no nearby highways, no power, and no cell service ….

WEDNESDAY NIGHT UPDATE: Good news. We have connectivity at our campground. We’ll be camping for a few days.

Now for a funny story.

We stopped to fill the motorhome with gas this afternoon. Next to the gas station was a McDonalds, so Ann walked over in her baggy camping clothes to get a little food.  As she walked away she laughed and shouted, “I bet these clothes make me look homeless!”

Her knee has been bothering her, so she slowly walked there, just adding to her “look”. On her return trip, she exited McDonalds, again slowly, then paused to let a vehicle leave the drive-thru. At that point, a woman driving slowly past Ann rolled down her window and attempted to give Ann a dollar bill, thinking Ann was homeless. Ann was befuddled. She looked at the woman and shook her head and said, “no thanks.” Puzzled, the woman shrugged, rolled up her window, and drove on….

I think my next book should be titled, Yikes! I Married a Homeless Woman!

A comment on cargurus also mentions the use of jeep parts with Datsuns:

“There were machine shops who did the conversions that individual dealer had contracts with .Datsun were built by spencer low, southbay, quadco, northwest atv. They used early jeep components dana axles and the semi tough dana 300 tease. Early models used Jeep rear end also to keep 5 on 5 1/2 matching wheels but them the datsun rears were retained with a machined front hubs to run the standard datsun 6 lug wheel.. most conversion company’s added a tag under the vin tag on the back of the driver door sil ,quadco had stamped shift knobs I’ve owned 5 datsuns 73-79 converted to 4×4 a 76 courier sasquatch 4×4 conversion.”

1948? CJ-3A? Portland, OR $10,000

No pics provided. Highly modified.

https://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/cto/d/1948-willys-cj3a-with-modern/6442066750.html

“So this is a 1948 CJ3A, titled as such with only two parts on it that are original. Everything else is from a samurai. Basically it’s a fiberglass jeep body, bolted onto a 1994 samurai frame with all samurai running gear. It was built to be ultra light, with the bench mark of below 1800 lbs which meets the legal requirements for a side by side (class IV UTV) to go on side by side only delegated trails. It’s also a fully insured street legal registered 48 cj3a (no DEQ to meet). The fiberglass body is also made to be 8” longer than a stock CJ3A has to accommodate taller drivers. Why a samurai? Everything on a samurai is built to be lightweight. The engine is fuel injected, aluminum block and heads, fully dressed weights 175 lbs…….. If you think bolting a chevy 350 inside a CJ2A is a good idea this rig probably isn’t for you. If you recognize the biggest advantage you can have off road is lightweight, we should talk. It takes the idea of “go anywhere” to a whole new level.

1958 FC-150 body and tub (no drive train). Great shape. Barn kept from southern Colorado in the desert.

Exterior: Minimal rust (mainly in the bed seams), cab corners are great and rust free. Windshield and rear window but no side glass. Spare tire, gas tank and tailgate all present. Front and rear bumpers are original. Tires hold air but are not road worthy. I have a set of 31×10.5R15 that are in good shape that will go with the truck. Great Patina!!

It has an aftermarket 3B tub on a custom frame.

“Willys 3B Jeep with a custom boxed frame. The jeep has a hard top with the hard doors. There is a Chevy 350 mounted on the new custom frame as well. The tub is the remanufactured heavy duty metal tub. New hood, fenders, nice grill, tailgate, custom steel bumpers with heavy duty tongue. This is an unbelievable project, it just needs someone to finish it up. New disk brakes, hubs have been rebuilt, fluids changed in the axles. The pictures in this ad were taken prior to having a custom boxed steel frame made to handle the 350 engine. Too many new parts to mention!!!!! Make me a reasonable offer! Will consider trades such as equipment, tools, tractors, lulls, skid steer, trucks, diesels, trailers, lumber, center console boats, inboard boats. I am open to trade up with cash.”

1958 NPS Truck … Needs Parts

• CATEGORIES: Fire/Police/Industry Vehicles, Willys Trucks This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: Unclear if Rudy still needs parts or not.

Rudy recently purchased this National Park Service fire truck out of Fort Collins, Colorado. He wants to restore it, but needs some help locating parts and information about it. If anyone knows anything or has some parts, please contact him at rudyskfparts @ sbcglobal.net (remove spaces around the @).

“Looking for the needle in a hay stack but it’s worth a shot as not many Willys fire trucks out there. Looking for the pump, tank, hose reel and any other items that may have come off this truck over the years. Has a great history serving in the National Park Service and want to bring it back to it’s former glory but will need some help.

This was purchased in 1993 at a Government surplus auction by Mr. Bender of Fort Collins at which time it was a functioning fire truck but soon sold it to a Mr. Kleeberg who at the time owned a wrecking yard for years in Fort Collins. Not much is known after this point as Mr. Kleeberg passed away and little is known what happened to the missing parts. If anyone knows any history and /or what happened to any of the parts specific to this truck I would be interested in purchasing any parts to help restore the truck. Will gladly pay a finders fee that leads to the purchase of any parts as well.
First two pictures are of the truck needing the parts and the last four are of a similar trucks and what the parts would look like. The truck was built by Bay City Fire Trucks in Bay City Michigan.”

I feel like I have seen these two jeeps somewhere recently ….

Thanks to Gray and Dave for sharing photos form the 2017 Mason-Dixon Willys Jeep Gathering on Sunday. The weather was perfect and both reported they had a good time.

Dave noted, “Great show on a beautiful day, though a bit warm for the end of October in these parts. I didn’t do any counting but, I’m estimating around 10-12 used parts vendors with everything imaginable related to cjs, trucks, and wagons, and around 40-50 jeep vehicles including civilian cjs, the trucks, wagons, FC, Jeepster guys and, the military vehicle group that included a military wrecker, a WWII deuce and several jeeps. All in all, this is a great show that gets better each year. Thanks to the Union Mills Homestead site for having us and to Mike for organizing it.”

Gray added, “Such a great show . Lots of parts for sale and everybody was so nice!”

Below are a mix of Dave and Gray’s photos. The first one shows this year’s award winners:

1947 Truck Medford, OR **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Willys Trucks This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $3400.

This is a project, but the body appears in good shape. Seller provides lots of details.

1947-truck-medford-or7 1947-truck-medford-or8 1947-truck-medford-or9

“Read description carefully, most of the info you need is there- I am busy and don’t have time for emails from people who are too lazy to read.

This truck has great potential, I’ve had it for years but I don’t have the time to give it the attention it deserves. Unlike 90% of the Willys trucks out there, this is one of the few that I would restore as it is fairly rare. Beaten, and abused Willys trucks are a dime a dozen, but this one has more potential than most, as is an early “flatnose” 1947, and may be one of the earliest surviving 4×4 civilian pickup trucks in the United States (excluding the Power Wagon truck, which was the same as the military version).

The truck looks much better in pics than in person. I did a quick paint job of the original Michigan Yellow as when I got this truck the PO had sanded the body to bare metal, then abandoned the project. I didn’t do any body work, nothing hidden or bad surprises. With the exception of the bed floor (rust) tranny tunnel (cut to fit PTO) and grill (backside cut to fit motor) the body is pretty good. The doors are the straightest I have ever seen, the cab is very good, the fenders good except a few holes where turn signals were mounted (these trucks did not come with turn signals). Other than a small bolt hole on door (for a mirror), no bondo or bodywork was seen. What you see is what you get. Solid metal.

The motor is a 1965 5-bolt 289. It runs, drives and doesn’t smoke, but I don’t think the motor is that tight as the oil pressure drops pretty low on longer drives. The motor is the same code as the Cobra and mustang HP 289, but it is not the HP. I’m 99% the motor could be fixed by replacing the bottom bearings, or you could pull the motor and sell it for enough money to buy a replacement. These motors can go for a fair amount of money. Really a great motor but needs a bigger radiator.

The Koenig PTO works.

Brand new vintage looking Deep Lug mud tires with hard-to -find 16″ Willys wheels. over 1k in the wheels.

Has a later model heater that works well, but the install wasn’t the best.

the bed is straight, but has holes on the floor and isn’t the bed that originally came with the truck. The easy fix is to weld a later-model floor in place of the original, as you may never find a bed that hasn’t been abused hauling rock or firewood.

The tailgate is salvageable, but not the greatest. Still, like the bed, these things were workhorses, and nearly always abused on a ranch or farm. Straight tailgates with the “WO” (Willys-Overland) are hard to find.

Most of the glass and rubber, including the windshield are new. the windshield gasket alone costs over $300.

The brakes were redone just before I got the truck. Need bleeding and adjustment.

Steering is sketchy. Bushings and basic maintenance should make it drivable-BUT, if you haven’t had the pleasure of driving something this old, please understand these are a bitch to drive! This is a manly-man truck that takes skill and patience to drive. You do not want to commute to work everyday in it, and it is not safe to drive on the highway.

Bill of Sale only. Not stolen!”

Laurel C. Worman and the Worman Products for Early Jeeps

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE II: More history on the Worman company in the January 1948 issue of Wilys Overland Sales News.

UPDATE: This article appeared in the 2016 Winter edition of Dispatcher Magazine. The original of this was posted in October of 2106 as a series of notes, but is now updated with text from that article along with some additional photos.

Willys-Overland equipment manufacturers experienced a range of successes and failures. One of those who entered the market at the dawn of the CJ-2A to achieve the former was Laurel C. Worman, a businessman who created the first set of jeep hardtops for different applications, most sold under the brand Jee-Cab.

1946-non-branded-worman-hardtop1

Early Willys-Overland branded Laurel C. Worman built hardtop.

EARLY YEARS OF LAUREL C. WORMAN:
Laurel C. Worman was born in 1898 in Toledo, Ohio, to Ernest and Clara Worman. He was the younger of two children. The boy’s father Ernest was a self-made man, who developed a large hardwood lumber business, something Laurel must have watched with fascination. When he was old enough, Laurel married Muriel Florence Jackson. The pair had two sons, Ernest “Ernie” William and Lester Lee Worman. The couple later divorced. By 1940, Laurel had remarried a woman named Ruth.

Perhaps Laurel’s father’s entrepreneurial influence led him to become a self-made man himself. While his early employment history has yet to be unearthed, by 1941, Laurel was president of Packard Toledo, Inc. Well known in Toledo automotive circles, Laurel later that year became a northwestern Ohio distributor for the new Willys Americar. It may have been the car that interested him most, but more likely it was the potential of the jeep, which had garnered automotive interest for more than a year.

About this time in 1941, Laurel C. Worman incorporated a company by the same name, under which he placed the Willys dealership. It was only one of several companies he would co-found. In December 1941, he went to Washington, D. C., as a dealer representative and gathered with other auto industry to reps to establish a ceiling on car prices, perhaps in anticipation of war. Four days after returning from his D. C. meeting, the Japanese struck Pearl Harbor.

The war doesn’t appear to have slowed Worman down. By 1942, he was placing ads in the Toledo Blade, arguing how “Willys Truck Owners Are Lucky!” Laurel noted that Willys-Overland had produced the most economical line of trucks. He told potential customers they would be well-served by the truck’s low use of gasoline and their rugged nature, two characteristics important for enduring war time challenges. Worman also made sure to note that Willys was the producer of the jeep, already famous by September of 1942.

1942-09-14-toledoblade-worman-ad

As an automotive dealer seemingly in the thick of things in Toledo during WWII, there’s no evidence he formed plans for any jeep equipment. But, as a Willys dealer in Toledo, he certainly would have stayed abreast of the CJ’s progress and must have saw potential in the jeep following the war.

THE CJ-2A ARRIVES:
When the CJ-2A was introduced to the public in July of 1945, options included a front soft top ($55) and rear soft top ($39). The first civilian hardtop half-cab, according to Fred Coldwell in his Preproduction Civilian Jeep book, didn’t go into production until the fall of 1945. Somewhere around that time, the Army asked Willys-Overland to design a full steel cab for the late 1945 MBs. The result was a stretched version of the half cab, but it never went into production. One probable reason was that steel was in short supply. Another reason was that they were heavy.

In August 1945, Worman invited prospective buyers to visit his dealership and see the new “Universal ‘Jeep’” for themselves. The amazing “4-in-1” vehicle was advertised as a light truck, a light tractor, a runabout, and a mobile power unit. But, it still lacked the comfort of a full cab, a fact that must have been apparent to Worman as he engaged customers and sold jeeps through ’45 and into ’46.

1945-08-22-toledo-blade-worman-announces-jeep

Perhaps after hearing from dealers and customers that they’d prefer a hard top over the canvas front and rear tops, the Willys-Overland decided to contract with Laurel C. Worman to produce a line of hardtops. The hardtops would be made of aluminum, which, unlike steel, was amply available and light.

Unusual Hardtop from Uruguay

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Hugo, our eWillys correspondent from Uruguay, filed this report. He spotted this strange jeep, possibly a CJ-3A, with an unusual hardtop. He would have taken more pics, but its proximity behind the US embassy made snapping photos a little uncomfortable. So, he was in and out quickly!

I shared the photos with Fernando Vidal. He wrote back, “Actually, you can see ANY of weird adapting on vehicles in Uruguay… Uruguayans are customization specialists! Everyday on the roads and streets of Montevideo we use to spot many strange things on wheels of every kind. Uruguay never produced cars or trucks, which have always been imported as an expensive commodity, and its replacement parts were usually hard to find. The long term result is that they were used to the maximum (it’s common to find vehicles from the 40`s and 50`s being used as daily drivers). Creativity led to some horrendous (sometimes really funny) “frankensteins”, of vehicles from different decades stitched together on the most bizarre ways… “
