The “On Hold” Scam

• CATEGORIES: Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

A reader is in the process of selling his jeep. He listed it on eWillys and Willysforsale.com. He soon ran into a scam. We don’t know which site “Jay Larsen” used to find the jeep for sale, but I wanted to warn everyone just in case, as this scam has been used before (though I’ve never heard of any problems from eWillys readers).

The seller wrote, “I was contacted by a Jay Larsen. He agreed to buy the Jeep, but told me he wanted to use PayPal. I reluctantly agreed. I received a series of emails this morning indicating that the money was “on hold”. I was told that for the money to be released, I would have to send a money gram to a shipping company. They wanted $2,000. I did not proceed with the deal and told him I knew it was a scam.”

There’s nothing inherently bad about Paypal as I use it a lot to buy things and get paid for advertising. But, it doesn’t mean scammers won’t use it either. So, here are some warnings provided by Papal that include the “on hold” scam mentioned above: https://www.paypal.com/us/selfhelp/article/Scams-on-Craigslist-and-Other-Classifieds-Websites-FAQ3022

1949 De Anza Cavalcade – Life Magazine Tags Along

• CATEGORIES: Features, Magazine, Old Images, Trips, Women & Jeeps • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: This was published back in 2010. This seems appropriate, since the post below this one may feature the dozer blade shown in the photos below.

I believe these images are from the 1st annual De Anza Cavalcade, which occurred in 1949.  You can read a little about these events from the Hemet Jeep Club’s Website. Here’s an brief synopsis from Harry Buschert’s memorial:

In 1948 (Harry) Buschert joined the first Hemet Jeep Cavalcade and jumped in a jeep with Harvey Gibel at the Hemet Farmer’s Fairgrounds. The first Cavalcade, sponsored by the Anza- Borrego Trails Association and the Hemet Valley Chamber of Commerce, began as a way to show the public the need to pave the road between Hemet and Borero Springs. Over 400 Jeeps and 800 passengers came out for the first event. They took two days to travel down Coyote Canyon. Buschert would participate and assist in running the events for years to come. The event ran continuously until 1973. By 1973 the movement pave the road had become obsolete, the high prices of gasoline made the event too costly, and the perceived impact of the event affecting public perception all led to the its ending. The event took a fifteen year hiatus and began again in 1988, Buschert took part in the anniversary run.

The Life Magazine Photographer was Peter Stackpole, whom the New York Times described as a chronicler of California Trends.  Peter was part of the first group of photographers hired by Life Magazine.

You can view all the photographs of this two day ‘Jeep Ride’ in 1949 here. I have included small versions of a few of my favorite images.  Click on the images to see blown up views.

1) Here we are at the beginning:

Note the Department of Agriculture painted on the side.  That looks like a nice wool jacket, too:

Here the ‘wagon’ train is on the move.  Note the little boy peeking out the window:

You can see the line of Jeeps stretches for a ways:

Here the jeeps stop for a rest; I probably lightened this up a little too much, but I wanted to be able to see the details of the jeeps better.  Note that one of the jeeps near the bottom of the pic has an extended back — a woman is sitting in back of it:

One of the stranger arrangements was this CJ-2A that sported 3 or four passengers plus luggage, plus a plow! I have 3 images of that below:

And finally, when’s the last time you saw a Ford GP out Jeeping?

Again, you can see MANY more pics of this 1949 Hemet Jeep Club Calvacade at the Life Magazine Image Archives.

Sounds like it is in good shape.

“This Kelly top is off of a 1975 CJ5. These metal hardtops were available as dealer add-ons, and this one is in all original and working condition. All glass is there, and all the hand cranks work. The dome light lit when it was taken off. This is a 300 model, which is the top of the line except for the Bonanza. This hardtop would be easy to restore and put on that CJ5 you wanted to show.”

UPDATE: **Status Unknown** Was $5000.

This one has a strange story. I don’t know if it is an XM-408 or not, but I did run across a manual for a 6×6 Mutt on eBay (see bottom).

“Bought the Mutt a military vehicle auction. Took it to shop to get running. They removed the engine and claimed it was stolen. So it has not engine and possibly other thinks missing. It was a ambulance in a past life. Unknown who put the 6 wheels on. Could have been the collector or it could have been a test vehicle in the US or Israeli army. I wanted to get it up and running to drive around on some property. It is not street legal. It would be fun to have hauling people around a farm or ranch. Takes a flat head ford army jeep engine.”

Jim is selling his CJ-5. It’s got a ventilating windshield, overdrive, and a Meyer hardtop.

“A 1959 CJ-5. Has a Ford 302 under the hood. 3 speed. Needs a radiator and a battery. Has a Warn overdrive, rare ventilating windshield, hardtop, and 70/30 front seat. Shocks, leaf springs, alternator, and starter has been replaced within the last 100 miles. I hate to sell, but I have no time to finish. Replaced the engine that was in it from a 1971 Mustang. The ford 221 v-8 from a 1962 Fairlane that I removed, was worn out and smoking. Any and all parts I have will go with the sale. I have always wanted to do a full restoration on this one, but work keeps me away from home 11 months a year. It has been sitting under cover for 4 years. Needs minor work to run again.”

I can’t tell if theirs rust alone the bottom of the driver’s side of the body or if it is something else. The jeep has some mods.

“Beautiful example of a rust free, unmolested old Willy’s. All the right upgrades, but still very nostalgic and original. Shackle extension to give it a little lift. F Head motor, upgraded axles, new wiring, upgraded windshield, still 6 volt, new front tie rods and ball joints, tires, rebuilt generator etc…. Pretty sorted, a little tinkering, but runs and drives pretty darn good for an ancient relic! I was so excited about getting it and really wanted to keep it, but I’m running out of room and have another project coming. Has a good soft top and doors included as well as a few extra parts. Seats are in excellent shape, rear seat is a bit worn, but looks like it might be original as well. Starts right up! Come take a look. The market is all over the place on these, but I think it is fair and even a little under for it’s condition. I’ve seen them for more and I’ve seen them for less. I feel it’s middle of the road.”

UPDATE: MVPA Route 66 2017 Convoy

• CATEGORIES: Event, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Joe-in-Mesa joined the MVPA last weekend (You can track the convoy’s progress here) while they were camped in Williams, Arizona.  He filed this report with photos!:

“I trailered my ’42 GPW up Friday to join in the festivities thru Sunday morning. She ran pretty well, despite not liking cold morning air and me forgetting to tighten the points adjustment securing screw (oops). I understand 47 MVPA vehicles rode into Williams, and our Phoenix area clubs brought up another half dozen-ish. Our AMVCC club treated them to breakfast Saturday morning at the vehicle parking encampment. It was truly a perfect weekend: the vehicles, venue, weather, and so many great people!”

I’ve attached about 14 of the many pics I took, focusing on the jeeps. My GPW shows up at least 5 times since I wanted to include the Rt 66 and Grand Canyon RR images that were the backdrop to the whole event.

“This is a 1952 M38A1C military jeep. it’s also a rare artillery version. This was before the CJ5 came out but they shared the same DNA. has the original hood numbers. previous owner wanted it preserved. that was my intention but the buyer backed out of our deal.

I restored and still own one of these and they are a beautiful piece of history. Vets love them. Sadly the wife says no more to my military collecting and it has to go. If she said it then it must be true.

it’s restorable or would be good for parts to finish yours. the rolling chassis has the body, fuel tank, front clip, windshield, bumper, complete grill, pintle hook, radiator and seats. The T90 transmission and Dana 18 transfer case are present but removed, and it has a rare valuable Rancho overdrive attached. Driveshafts are there. Top bows are of the CJ5 civilian era. it’s remarkably rust free on the tub, grill, windshield and fenders, except the tub was cut around the cowl and the tool box is rusted out. i’m sure the hat channels need attention. Many valuable and very hard to find parts are still on this.
what is missing: no canvas or top, bumperettes, bellhousing, no engine or attached engine parts, ebrake drum or handle, or spare tire carrier. These are still available aftermarket and easy to find.

Not sure how much value is here. Given the three data tags it is most likely a 1946.

“Found in the back of a lean to on a farm that my friend inherited. It is all there except for the roof cross bows that may also be there somewhere. We are not interested in parting it out. Nobody is there to do that and it is a bit of a drive for us. I am not sure he knew it was there the roof of the shed settled down on a tractor that he wanted out and there it was back in the back covered up with junk. It belonged to his grandfather. It has 1963 plates on it. If it was ever registered that is probably when. My friend is 56 and never seen it moved. All the wheels roll and its complete as when parked. Plenty of rust including the floor pans. Both vin tags are present but almost unreadable. There is an extra windshield there and possibly other parts. Thanks Lynn”

Day 15: Aug 4, You Want to do WHAT?

<– Day 14: Aug 3, Reaching Alaska | Day 16: Aug 5, Parting Ways –>

At the Arctic Circle: Pictured left to right bottom row: Joe’s CJ-3B, Joe, Emily, Bill, Cowboy, Russ, Don, and Jim’s CJ-2A. Picture left to right top: Jim, Marty, and Don.

This is the full and final update related to Alaska Or Rust trip. Our collective objective was to drive as a group from Dawson Creek, BC, to Fairbanks, Alaska.

In the late afternoon of Thursday August 3rd, the group finally arrived in Fairbanks, tired. When we went to check in, there was some confusion, but we got everything corrected. Afterwards, we all went out to have some great barbecue at Big Daddy’s BBQ in downtown Fairbanks. We’d been on the road since early morning, so pretty much everyone was tired.

While awaiting the delivery of our meals, Joe got the idea that we all should drive to the Arctic Circle starting at 3am or so on the morning of August 4th. He calculated the trip would take six hours and that they’d be back before our 11:00am meet-up at the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum. Essentially, they’d be driving on only a couple hours sleep on a muddy, gravel road.

2017-08-04-arctic-circle-map

The drive to the Arctic Circle sign. It’s a mostly gravel and mud road with few pullouts and a lot of big rig trucks. It’s a 194 miles north of Fairbanks.

After some discussion, others decided they wanted to go, too. This led to more discussion on when they should leave. Eventually, the group decided to leave around 2am (I never did hear when they actually left). I told them to have a good time, but also that they should be back by 11am, because they’d all agreed to attend the museum event.

“Oh yeah, we’ll be back in time,” They promised. Personally, I had my doubts, but it wasn’t my role to tell them what they could and couldn’t do. At one point Cowboy asked me if I’d be mad at them if they didn’t show up in time. I told him that of course I’d be mad. I’d passed the idea of the meet-n-greet by them before having Rick make the arrangements and everyone agreed it would be fun. But, I also told them that I’d get over it. I appreciated their sense of spirit; I just wanted them to abide by what they agreed and that was to attend the meet that we’d worked to arrange.

To make a long story short, 11am rolled around and they weren’t back. Those left in Fairbanks rolled over the to the museum. When we arrived we learned there were already folks there who wanted to meet us. Noon rolled around and they weren’t back. 1pm came and went and they weren’t there. Finally, about 1:20pm, they appeared at the parking lot. Here are some pics of their journey:

Hugo & Fernando’s signature on Patteron’s hood.

Today the four of us travelled from High River on Alberta’s eastern slope to Grande Cache at the top of Jasper National Park. (See yesterday’s post here)

2017-07-26-highriver-grandecache-map

Our goal for the day was to traverse the length of Banff and Jasper National Parks. Because we felt the drive would be a long one, we began the day at the crack of 8am. I know that doesn’t seem early, but it sure felt early. The late nights are catching up to us.

2017-07-26-morning

Our first objective was to locate a mini SD card for our Go Pro. With few options open at 8am, we were forced to head north to the Walmart at Otokos. There, as I dashed inside to get a card, Fernando and Vidal drove to the gas station to get gas. Minutes later we pulled up behind them. Before I had a chance to place the gas nozzle into the filler hole, two kids and their father came over to tell me how cool the jeep was. I asked if they wanted to sign it and their faces lit up!

2017-07-26-signees-otokos

Once they signed, I began pumping gas. Meanwhile, Fernando and Hugo, who were in front of me, finished pumping their gas and waited for me to finish. About then, I began hearing a honking sound. Then another. Then another. I looked up from the pump and some woman was trying to get Fernando to drive away from the pump by honking her horn even though there were two other lanes open! No, she wanted the pump in front of me. Fernando tried to ignore her, but she was insistent, so he pulled out. Can you guess what she did?  Continue reading

I had picked up this jeep with dreams of restoring it, but life got in the way. There’s rust, and she’s got character, but overall the jeep is in running, driving, and almost stopping condition. You can put in a little time and have a cool willy’s to drive around in, or if you wanted, most of the parts and extras are there to restore to its former glory. To(w) Hell & Back

2017-07-16-patterson-tow-failure9

Patterson looks ready for the big tow to Eastern Washington.

Claiming that Sunday was “Tow Hell” day might be a slight exaggeration, but I wouldn’t call it a winning day either. Let’s recap the last couple days as I’ve been so busy I haven’t had time to photograph some of it.

I finally got the jeep running well on Friday after determining there was an air leak in a short piece of hose (let air in, but did not let gas out). I then timed it by ear and feel, rather than diagnostics, and that seemed to do the trick. On Saturday, I built a tow setup that utilized existing holes in the front bumper. I wanted some thing strong, but didn’t want to drill into the bumper.

Once the tow setup was ready, I turned to the exhaust. I’d already had Ann go to a muffler shop to replicate the 1.5″, 7′ section of tailpipe I needed (thankfully I had an original end section leftover from one of the DJs to use as a template). I combined the tail pipe with a Walker muffler I bought off Amazon and some Oreilly’s clamps and assembled the exhaust with relative ease.

I thought we were ready to head for Pasco on Sunday morning.

The early DJ-3As has an exhaust that pretty much was straight. The only bends needed were 1) the bend on the front piece from the manifold down to the cross member, 2) the exhaust piece has to bend over the rear axle, and 3) the exhaust bends to the outside past the gas tank (not pictured). (1955 DJ-3A manual). Good luck finding a shop that had this series of bends in their shop manuals or computer!

For comparison, this is the more likely setup that you’ll find at a muffler shop (if they have anything this old). It’s a more typical setup for 2As, 3As, 3Bs, etc. This doesn’t work for the DJ, because the muffler is positioned where the rear gas tank is installed.

We spent the first part of Sunday morning cleaning up the garage. It was a bit of a mess! Once that was done, we hooked up Patterson and began slowly towing him. We didn’t make it through the first intersection of my parent’s quiet neighborhood before I realized that the jeep wasn’t tracking around the corner. When I turned slowly right, it began to turn slowly left, forcing me to hit the brakes.

What the hell? I’ve towed a number of vehicles and never, ever run into this type of trouble.

We carefully tried a couple more corners and each was the same. The jeep began to turn the opposite way. I’d have to hop out and correct Patterson’s direction. After a trip around the block, we arrived at my parent’s house once more.

Testing the tracking at a very slow pace.

I pulled out my googler, but couldn’t find anyone having a similar problem. I concluded the drag link/ross box was somehow interfering with the jeep from tracking properly. I did read were “Dr. Verne” (aka Verne Simmons) would remove his drag link to tow it, but my custom radiator made that strategy near impossible without disassembly of multiple items. I was just about ready to remove the drag link when I decided, on a lark, to unscrew the control screw(could be the wrong name for this) on the Ross box. My assumption was that this would loosen the Ross mechanism, freeing the drag link to spin the steering wheel more easily.

Holey Hoses Batman!

Inspiration is a funny thing. You just never know what will inspire you. Unfortunately, sometimes its timing is terrible.

Case in point: A few days ago Patterson wouldn’t start. I checked all the usual suspects and finally decided it was the fuel pump. I shall not bore you with the machinations I went through testing the original fuel pump and two others I have. I hand tested them, then installed them and they’d fail. Then I’d remove them, manually test them, and they’d work again. It was bizarre.

I concluded that somehow it was the cam on the inside of the engine; that wasn’t an easy fix. With time working against me, Craig Brockhaus of theFCConnection.com recommended I get the same electric pump he has on his Tour Jeep. It was a good price and available on Amazon and I’d get 2 day delivery for free. Done deal.

For two days I worked on other things, waiting for that fuel pump to arrive. When it finally did, I took it out of the box, climbed under the jeep, and sized up possible installation options. I decided that since the gas filter had to precede the electric pump, I needed to bring that under the jeep with me. I got up and found the gas filter. Attached to it I’d left a 4″ piece of connector hose that originally connected the filter to the pump. As I looked more closely at the hose on the pump I realized that it looked roughed up by the clamp.

And then it dawned on me. Inspiration struck! What if there’s a small hole in that short piece of hose. When I had hand tested the fuel pump, I didn’t have the filter or 4″ hose attached. So, I held up the hose to my mouth, plugged the rear hole, and blew. I could feel the air rushing out a hole on the tube.

I quickly reinstalled the original pump, Then, installed a new short piece of hose. With everything tight, I turned the key a few times and before I knew it Patterson fired right up! It was a hole in the hose the hole time.

The question I have is, why couldn’t I have been inspired before I bought the electric pump? Life is a mystery!

As of this evening the engine is running smoothly and feeling peppy! I also had time to find a solution for installing a CB Radio. I didn’t want to drill new holes if possible and I wanted it easy to remove. So, I decided to build a small pedestal on top of the transfer case lever plate. It is something I can easily swap out for whatever reason.

You can see the square tube welded to the transfer case lever plate. The tube is cut at an angle and a plate is welded atop that. A CB holder bracket is bolted to the plate.

This shows the radio installed. You’ll note that just above the radio there is now a cigarette lighter for phone charging.

Tomorrow I install a tow bumper:
