“Plumb” Tired

• CATEGORIES: News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

No updates today …. Sunday evening we were watching some TV when our sewer alarm sounded from our crawl space … oh joy of joys! After some investigation, I figured out that it wasn’t the sewer that was the problem, but rather the alarm box was being triggered due to excessive moisture from a pipe that was leaking.

Lovely …. cue the water-shut-off-dry-camping-at-home protocol, something we just did last month when the well shut down during the cold spell. Rather than tackle the issue Sunday night, I decided to run the shop van overnight in the crawl space to evaporate some water and address the problem on Monday.

Sunday night I didn’t sleep well, so when I got up early Monday morning, I made some coffee and sat on my Mother-in-laws white couch, which she babied to the point that almost no one could sit on it while she is alive . Now that she has passed, we own the couch and we often drink coffee and do puzzles on our phones while sitting on it in the morning. Unfortunately, Monday morning’s coffee ritual was overturned when my phone cord caught my coffee cup, tipping the cup and splashing a full cup of coffee all over the couch. UGH! Great start to the day!

After a morning of arduous cleaning, I tackled the leak. I will wind up this story, as I am falling asleep writing it! I was able to get the copper pipe removed, replacing it with pex. The pex should be better able to handle our softened water and, now on our third leak in a year’s-time, we think this 20+ year old copper may need to be fully replaced, certainly the hot water recycler will need it, as we have had two leaks on that line.

Once I got that leak fixed, I turned on the water and, success, no leak from that pipe.

However, as I was packing up my tools, Ann discovered that the laundry hookups valve was leaking (a single valve closes both the hot and the cold), dripping water within the wall. Fortunately, because I had removed the drywall, we could see the leak real-time. Hopefully, I can get that fixed tomorrow!

And that is my sad tale of woe from the last few days!

So, no Tuesday updates. Not sure if there will be any Wednesday or not.

1964 Jeep News Volume 10 Number 2

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This is the eight-page issue of Jeep News Volume 10 Number 2. Page one shows an image from the 1964 Chicago Auto Show and I’m surprised I don’t see any FCs or DJs, which suggests (to me) KJC was already planning to phase them out. This display strongly suggests that the future was the Gladiator and Wagoneer’s. Also on page one is the announcement of the purchase of Studebaker’s Defense Products Division, which I didn’t know Kaiser used to springboard into the large military vehicle contracts. Page two continues the Chicago Auto Show story.

There’s an interesting photo on page three showing a CJ-5 surrounded by Tonka toys at a Woolworth store. That sure looks like it was a cool display! Page four shows a pic of a custom hunting ‘”jeep” produced by Dick M. Campbell Motors ‘Jeep’ dealership out of Alice, Texas. I’d like to know more about these creations and how many they produced.

Page five highlights another Jeep movie promotion, this time with Rock Hudson and his movie “Man’s Favorite Sport?“. The movie naturally includes a Wagoneer. Pages six and seven include photos from across the US and a few from international locals. Page eight highlights Ken and Fran Jones, who love their Wagoneer and even used it on a ninety mile an hour chase after a stolen car, successfully capturing the thief.

1960 August/September Jeep Service and Parts News

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

The four-page issue of the 1960 August/September Jeep Service and Parts News issue contains an ominous note at the bottom of the last page. The article noted that the military released some surplus M-38 fan blades, but warned that the fan blade should not be used with any other Jeep vehicle, as the results will be “unsatisfactory”. This got me wondering just how different these blades were? The fact that I have a remanufactured M-38 engine in my DJ-3A made me wonder if I also have an M-38 blade. Given my temp gauge doesn’t work all that well in the DJ, I doubt I will be any more unsatisfied with the temp than I already am!

Monroe 3-Point Parts Storrs, CT

• CATEGORIES: Parts This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Ted’s got some parts for sale. He’s got other PTO related parts for sale, too.

For sale are some various Willys Jeep Monroe Three Point Hitch Hydraulic Implement Lift parts. Pricing on the individual parts can be found further down in the listing. These are quite often the rarer or hardest parts to find of the complete Monroe hydraulic lift. These parts are high quality machined and fabricated parts from original Monroe parts I had. I had sold a collection of these Monroe lifts and was always having a hard time finding some of the tougher parts to locate to complete the lift set ups, so I finally decided to use a few of the original pieces I had as templates and replicate these rare parts. Prices quotes will include shipping costs within the states and all mounting bolts and hardware pictured for each part respectively. Below is a list and description of all the parts with pricing. There will be a number next to most of the parts which is the number used to show the parts in the original Monroe lift care and operation manual

#23 Back support bracket for main Housing. This bracket supports the lift Main Housing at rear of Jeep and is bolted to drawbar. Excellent machined part with correct mounting bolts and one hole threaded to be bolted from under Jeep to not interfere with rear PTO Gearbox when installed. Part is actually more rugged than the original cast piece
$150 shipped with mounting bolts and hardware

#9 Center or Top Link adjustment rack plates
These are the adjustment rack plates for top or upper link on the Hitch. These are high quality laser cut plates complete with mounting bolts and hardware to bolt them up to your center link
$75 shipped in the us

#22 Limit Chains Drawbar attachment bolts. These are machined attachment bolts used to hold the limit or anti sway chains to the Jeeps drawbar. Exact match to the originals
$75 shipped for a set of two in the States

#20 Drawbar Clevis or Knuckles. These are the drawbar mounted clevises or some people call them
knuckles that support the right and left hand lower links or arms. Exact fabricated copies of an original piece. Very rugged pieces , painted the Monroe Red
$225 for a set of two Clevises shipped within the states

Monroe main Housing under body support / brace with all mounting bolts and hardware and exhaust mounting angle and bolt

No manual part number on this last part as it’s not listing in manual. Quite possibly one of the rarer or hardest parts to find in a Monroe Three Point Hitch Assembly. I’ve had a bunch of these lifts and had yet to see an original brace. Seems there always discarded or left behind possibly when
Lift is removed from Jeep. I was lucky enough to borrow and original piece from a buddy and have it copied exactly to match the original. These supports or braces are used under the Jeep body to support and secure the Lifts Main Housing to the Jeep bed. Braces are complete with mounting bolts and all hardware
$185 shipped within the states

I included a picture of one of the under body Monroe Housing braces bolted to an original housing
To show how it would bolt up under jeep etc. Also pictured is the original brace or support I used as the template for the fabricated new braces
I will be adding one pic of the original care and operation Manual showing the part breakdown and numbers matching etc
Feel free to contact me with any questions etc. Also have a large collection of Willys Jeep Power Take Off related items and parts I’m selling as well.
Just had a few more sets of the rear draw bar anti sway chain bolts made and are available until gone. Also have a few Complete Willys Truck PTO setups available with Twinstick PTOs and rare two piece driveshaft setups to back of truck and rear pto gearbox output shafts

“44 Jeep. Former military m38 but more similar to a cj2a. Runs and drives. Lots of work done to it. Newer “F-head” engine previously only in cj3b and cj5 (i fit it in without a hood scoop with a low profile carb and air cleaner). T90 rebuild and swap, Dana 18 rebuild, new brakes all the way around, new carb, new body mounts, new radiator, new batter, new fuel pump, tank relocated to back (as opposed to factory under drivers seat), new clutch, new plugs, wires, distributor, new wiring harness, lights, twin stick t case, gauges, u joints, new windshield (windshield frame is a cj3a frame) and new paint……. Cons: the paint is textured “monstaliner” bedliner like paint (not UV sensitive). Looks pretty good but was used to hide the less than perfect dents and dings under the paint. Underneath looks better than most Jeeps these years. And it needs a top. I also wouldn’t recommend it for someone over 6’ (I’m 6’3” which is the main reason I’m selling it.)”

The more I read these Jeep Service and Parts News issues, the less they look like news and the more they look like reminders to Sell, Sell, Sell! (See “The Parts Department Manager” on page four). It’s not that there isn’t a place for encouraging selling for this department, but whether it belongs in a news bulletin is less clear to me.

In the “not all air bath cleaners are made the same department”, the note on the lower right portion of page four highlights a new air bath cleaner for the FC-150 that includes “a water deflector to eliminate the possibility of water entering the air cleaner from the back of the fire wall”.
