1959 Truck Dallas, TX **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Willys Trucks • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $10,000

I have a nice 1959 Jeep truck for sale. I have done some updates over the years. Updates include relined gas tank, brakes, hoses, belt, plugs, tires, tow bar, paint, etc. I had it painted back to original as best as I could.

It still needs a parking brake cable and a vent window is cracked. It has low mileage and was a barn find when I bought it. It was all original and had only surface rust. It is what attracted me to it. It has the strong six super hurricane engine and does not smoke. It runs strong and the clutch is good. I was told it is a rare 1 ton model. I have a clear Texas title. The only reason I would sell it is I have a CJ-2A also and do not need two Jeeps. I think it is better than a new Razor, mule or any other ATV since it is in another class for the money. I have a bus bench seat for additional riders in the bed. Please call for a showing or test drive.”

CL Terms of Use and the Ownership of Your Content

• CATEGORIES: News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

One more note about Craigslist ..

I’ve just reviewed the new Terms of Use (TOU) from Craigslist.  One section is particularly interesting. It seems that general search engines (how does one define that?) and noncommercial public archives are entitled access to Craigslist without written agreements.

“As a limited exception, general purpose Internet search engines and noncommercial public archives will be entitled to access craigslist without individual written agreements executed with CL that specifically authorize an exception to this prohibition* if, in all cases and individual instances: (a) they provide a direct hyperlink to the relevant craigslist website, service, forum or content;”

*The prohibition I highlight is the prohibition of copying, aggregation, or derivative use of CL content.

Given that eWillys is intended to be a public archive of vintage jeep information with free access to all users, I feel this statement suggests that the threat of  Craigslist serving me with a cease and desist order seems small at this point.  Frankly, I think they will be too busy dealing with their present lawsuits.

The bigger deal with the TOU change is the ownership clause:

Now,under the current TOU, when posting any content to Craigslist you grant Craigslist an exclusive license (they removed ‘non-exclusive),

You also expressly grant and assign to CL all rights and causes of action to prohibit and enforce against any unauthorized copying, performance, display, distribution, use or exploitation of, or creation of derivative works from, any content that you post (including but not limited to any unauthorized downloading, extraction, harvesting, collection or aggregation of content that you post).”

This means they own an exclusive right to the content you post.  The implications of this are that if you add a company logo to a post, then theoretically a company could not use that logo in any other fashion without Craigslist’s consent;  if you post a picture, you cannot repost that picture on another website without Craigslist’s consent;  and it means, theoretically, you can not copy the text you post on Craigslist for an ad on eBay, your local newspaper, or for any other use without Craigslist’s consent.  Of course, Craigslist won’t enforce this right with 99% of users.    But, what if someone got control of Craigslist who had questionable motives OR Google or other websites added similar TOUs?

Will their TOU stand up in court?  The general consensus is NO.  Why?  As Plagarismtoday points out, “The reason is that, under U.S. copyright law, the transfer of a copyright or exclusive rights to a work require a written contract (PDF). This is not true for non-exclusive agreements.”

Craigslist changes terms and sues 3Taps and Padmapper

• CATEGORIES: News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  There seems to be some debate in the websphere about whether Craigslist asked Google to stop indexing its pages as reported earlier.  Moreover, this article suggests that Craiglist’s position vis-a-vis padmapper is very weak.  http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/08/craigslist-reportedly-blocks-search-engines-to-kill-competitors/

I wondered Monday morning why there were so few updates on Craigers and Searchtempest.  Well, now I understand why.  The following was posted on Craiggers Monday Night:

“At approximately noon on Sunday August 5th, Craigslist instructed all general search engines to stop indexing CL postings — effectively blocking 3taps and other 3rd party use of that data from these public domain sources. We are sorry that CL has chosen this course of action and are exploring options to restore service but may be down for an extended period of time unless we or CL change practices.”

As my father often says, “this is a problem.”

Even worse, Craigslist has sued padmapper and 3taps, while also changing the posting license.  According to this article,  “Essentially, the new terms allow Craigslist to pursue anyone caught posting (or hosting) an ad already displayed among its classifieds elsewhere on the web. Under copyright law, the company cannot claim ownership of core “facts” within each ad — things like an item’s price, the location of an apartment, and other basic information can be freely duplicated. What Craigslist can say it holds copyright over is the posting as a whole including description, photos, and other information.”

So, I will spend Tuesday with my kids and figure out what changes I need to make starting wednesday.

You can learn even more about this problem here:  http://www.bendbulletin.com/article/20120805/NEWS0107/208050321/

Just a few Updates Today (Monday)

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Just a few updates today.  Part of the reason is that we are heading back to Pasco today.  The other reason is that there just aren’t very many old flatfenders for sale at the moment.  I guess everyone is enjoying the heat wave?

We got a chance to drive biscuit in the pasture a few days ago, but didn’t get any pics.  Kasia took her turn at doing some technical driving and did pretty well.  Karson handles the jeep well.  Colter still prefers to ride.

I was messing around with Biscuit yesterday, testing out my paddle tires.  It turns out, rather than holding air for a day, my paddle tires only hold air for about five minutes.  This is a problem.

I guess I will need some inner tubes if I want these old tires to work for longer than five minutes.  That’s low on the list.  But, they do look cool, though they need a bath and some paint on the rims.

Here’s a magazine article from the September 1944 issue of Popular Photography.  This must have been quite the trip, as the Alaska Highway had been completed less than two years previously in November of 1942.

The magazine was on eBay, so I decided to purchase it.  You can view the article at Google Books.

Ira Fryer Associate Jeep Dealer

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features, Reader Stories • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: David Silberman has filled in some gaps from a story told by Jacques yesterday.

David writes, “Ira Fryer was an associate dealer, did not have a franchise. He was located at 714 Walnut Street in Reading. During the mid to late 50’s into the early 60’s he also sold Simca and Goliath cars. They knew their product, had a good service department and an excellent parts department. Mr. Fryer wore a shop coat while at work, something you don’t see now.

His son, Robert, also worked there. They had a 1940 Willys pickup and a 3-wheel Harley Davidson for the parts/service department. They went out when Hettinger Brothers got the franchise. The building was torn down to make way for a parking garage.

I seem to remember that he also sold Renault Dauphine at the time. It was an old fashioned garage, showroom in front, passage to the rear along side of the showroom. Mack, the parts guy, rode a motorcycle.

Hettinger Brothers got the franchise and Mr. Fryer disappeared from the scene when the building was torn down to make room for a parking garage. I think that was in 1965.

Hettinger Brothers didn’t last long as the Jeep dealer, as they had the Chrysler/Plymouth dealership and didn’t push the Jeep line. J.F. Kohler ended up with the dealership in 1963, and had it until the Renault fiasco of the early 80’s, at which time many of the dealers turned in their franchises due to the actions of the company.

An interesting side note on Hettinger Brothers. They had the Chrysler/Plymouth dealership for many years, and when the building was demolished they didn’t even take the time to remove the old parts inventory from the basement.”

Color Photo of a 1946 CJ-2A

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A, Features, Old Images, Reader Stories This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Jacques emailed me yesterday with a digital copy from a color slide of a 1946 CJ-2A.

He writes, “I was raised in Reading PA but have been living in Australia for the last 37 years. Attached is a colour slide I scanned of my Dads 1946 CJ2A when very new.  He bought it 1n 1947 as a demo model from a dealer in Reading who gave rides in it at the airport, now Spaatz Field to promote sales.

It was Harvest Tan with Harvard Red wheels. He had it until 1962 when he traded it for a new IH Travelall 4 x 4. Believe a mechanic at the IH dealership bought it.

Seem to remember the Jeep dealership in Reading was named Ira J Freyer. Wonder if it still exists?

Forgot to mention Dad so loved the military jeeps he used in New Guinea in the Signal Corps in WW2 that was the reason he bought a “new” CJ2A after the war.”

He writes, “It didn’t appear homemade and I didn’t see any welds or cuts that don’t look factory. I did roll it back and looked at the sheet metal on the front – it was neatly rolled and spot welded – very factory-like.”
