Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. Here’s a nice looking race flattie that appears on the cover of Offroad Magazine and taken at Gravelrama. Gravelrama is held in Ohio and has been since its inception in 1971. The Magazine is currently listed on eBay for $15.

This ad was featured in a 1952 Modern Mechanix Magazine advertisement. It advertises a remote control jeep that “goes forward . . reverse . . left . . right. It’s called a “electra-JEEP”.

The seller lists this as a 2A, but looks to me to be a 3A. This looks like an excellent project for the price.
“I have a 1949 Willys Jeep available for sale. It runs, but the fuel pump needs to be rebuilt (we were able to confirm that the engine is good by delivering gas straight into the carburetor). It also currently does not have brakes, although I have a brand new master cylinder and brand new wheel cylinders to go with it–these parts just need to be installed. It comes with a snowplow, but the hydraulic system for it needs to be overhauled. My grandfather found the Jeep in a salvage yard a number of years back and brought it back to life so that he could use it to haul wood around on our family farm. However, he passed away several years ago and the Jeep hasn’t been used much since then. This is a good project Jeep–everything is there; it just needs some work to get it back into good condition, and we don’t have the time to put into it. We will be demolishing the farmhouse and garage where it is currently being stored, so we’re forced to get rid of it. Other issues I can see with the vehicle: the windshield is cracked, the cooling system probably needs to be flushed, and the interior needs reupholstering.”

In the rear is a 9in ford with 4.11 gears and out front a closed knuckle dana 44 with disc brakes. There isn’t much in the interior, and this thing has plenty of rust and bad patches, but it is cool! “This is a complete unit meaning T90, D18, overdrive and Koenig pto with winch. As far as I can tell, this is a pretty rare unit to include overdrive and PTO together. I got it for my willys wagon, but you know the story, times are tough. Not sure of internal condition, but looks to be resealed. Was in 60’s cj5 with buick motor. Will not separate. UPDATE: I completed the book. There are some good stories of jeeping and others having nothing to do with jeeps. If you like adventure and travel, or African travel, or the challenges of border crossing, give this book a read. One favorite anecdote Andy writes about was a boss of his who at one time was Willys Overland Salesman in Africa during the 1940s. One of his sales strategies was roll them down a hill, tip them upright, and drive them away to demonstrate how hardy they were.

I was on Amazon yesterday ordering a book called “Jumping Fire: A Smokejumper’s Memoir of Fighting Wildfire” (which has a fascinating story about how smoke jumpers used a willys wagon). One thing led to another and I ran across a second book called “African Wanderlust: Across Colonial Africa by Jeep”. Never having heard of that book, I ordered it and will report on it once I read it.

Axles have not been pulled. Jeep had a spray on Rhino like finish applied. Jeep has engine noise probably tappet related. Canvas top also included. This looks solid. The bumper is unusual. There’s something wooden on the dash that I can’t quite see either. This may be a good price.
