• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A • TAGS: , .

1946_cj2a_canoncityUPDATE: **SOLD** Was $10,000

This is certainly a beautiful CJ-2A.  However, it’s not fully restored to original condition.  One of the obvious issues is the CJ-3A windshield it sports.

“Fully restored to original except for 12 Volt vice original 6 Volt system. $10,000 OBO. The Willys CJ2A was the first mass-produced Jeep intended for the civilian market, began production on July 17, 1945. Civilian Jeeps evolved from the model MB of World War Two fame.”

1951_m38_spartanburg2UPDATE: **SOLD**  Was $4699

“TThis is my 1951 Willys M38 military Jeep. The jeep runs great and drives great. It does not smoke, and starts right up anytime. The brakes work great as well. The body is extremely solid for the age of the Jeep. I absolutely hate to sell this Jeep. I had it for sale a while back, and after getting numerous calls I decided not to sell. I am not desperate, so please. No LOWBALLERS. These are getting very hard to find, and if you would like one to restore, or just to enjoy as is, this is the one. If you have questions give me a call or email, and I will respond ASAP. “

Reader Builds: Simon’s Tribute to His Uncle Bill

• CATEGORIES: Builds

uncle_billIn memory to his Uncle Bill,  a Brit named Simon, living in Colorado at the moment, has decided to paint his Willys 1943 MB in the marking of the unit his uncle commanded at the end of World War II.

His Uncle Bill, Lt. Colonel Charles William Arnot MC, OBE, TD, served in the Royal Army Medical Corps as a Field Surgeon in the British 50th (Tyne Tees) Division. Uncle Bill served through the dark days of 1939/1940 through to the liberation of Germany in 1945 eventually commanding 186th Field Ambulance.

His Uncle Bill died in the 1980’s when he was still young, and didn’t leave many mementos from his time in the War. So, Simon has pieced together the correct unit markings, together with history of the regiments progress through WWII from the internet, books, talking to family members and those items left by his Great Aunt.

As a result of this search, Simon has produced a PDF that documents his Uncle’s time during the war and decided to apply markings to his jeep which represent the unit his Great Uncle commanded in WWII, 186 Field Ambulance, part of the British 50th (Tyne Tees) Division.

Below is how Simon appllied the markings and below that an image of his jeep.

Vote for a 1948 M-38A1? I can’t do it!

• CATEGORIES: News

The Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union is sponsoring a 2009 Woodward Dream Cruise Calender Contest, along with the Oakland Press, The Macomb Daily and Daily Tribune.  As a part of this contest, the group has developed a website where readers can vote for the cars they want to see on the new Calendar.

A reader pointed to this contest out to me via a craigslist ad.  The Ad shows a Willys Jeep and asks people to vote for the jeep.  So far, so good.  I’m into it.

I’m ready to launch a grassroots campaign.  I’ll encourage, prod and poke people to cast their votes for the jeep.  We can do it.  We can get it on the calendar.

My hopes high, I go to the actual contest.  I view the approved list of 72 vehicles.  Cool, lots of nice vehicles.

But then, I spot the jeep.  It’s listed as a 1948 M-38A1.  It’s such a classic, that it was never produced!  How can this be?  Oh the horror!  I mean, this isn’t just some kind of incorrect listing of a jeep for sale; instead, it is supposed to be a list of classic cars.

Well, I just can’t support that.  So, until the correct model gets listed, I can’t vote for it.

  • Rod Shaver’s MV Dataplates (http://www.mvdataplates.com/)
  • Jeep Books (http://www.jeepbooksales.com/jeepbooks.html)
  • Stainless Steel Parts (Brian & Troy)
  • Fiberglass bodys

If anyone has any other suggestions, send them my way.

My Rebuild — Modifying the grille

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit

UPDATE: I wrote this post a year ago in May.  A reader recently asked about why my headlights looked different, so I am reposting and have updated it with info from the Classic Oldsmobile Forum.

One of the modifications I wanted to make was to change the size of the headlights from 7″ to 5 1/2″ to give my jeep a little different look.  I’ve only seen these smaller headlights on two jeeps (both of which had fiberglass grilles), one set was on my first jeep, pictured to the right (which shows my first set of lights on the left and then the bigger, standard lights after I switching to a metal grille on the right), and on a jeep called Otis (still owed by the Carter’s, long time family friends who actually named me — that’s another story) pictured below (note that the positions of the headlights seems to have changed between 1981 and 1985, which I just noticed — UPDATE:  Steve Carter tells me the change was due to a rollover involving his mom during a race in 1983.  The wider lights were the result of a new, wider radiator).

otis_headlights

One hitch to my plan was that I didn’t know where to find the 5 1/2″ headlight assemblies and Jim Carter couldn’t remember where he got his headlights.

After a good deal of searching, I learned a few things about headlamps.  First, the 7″ lights were mandatory on autos sold in the US starting around 1940.  Then, in the 50s, the laws were relaxed to allow dual 5″ lights.  However, most dual assemblies were combined headlight assemblies, but I needed individual headlight assemblies.  Finally, after roaming a great local junkyard that has a ton of old cars piled two and three high I finally found the individual assemblies, which look like mini jeep headlight assemblies, on an 1959 Oldsmobile dynamic 98.

According to a helpful forum user at the Classic Oldsmobile website, the 1959 and 1960 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 and 98s used the same size bezels and headlights (with the unique aspect that the bezels weren’t connected to other bezel parts, which makes them look like a jeep bezel), but the Dynamic 88s were Anodized aluminum, while the Dynamic 98s (like mine) were chromed.

Now that I understood what I had purchased, my first step was to creat a mockup.  Using some cardboard, I created some templates to see how the new lights might look in the grille.

Satisfied that the look is what I’m sought, over the next couple of days I modified the grille to accomodate the smaller headlights.  The first step was to attach the grille to a flat, waxed surface.

Next, I cut the fiberglass matting to fit the shape.

My Build: The front clip is together …

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit

These cell phone pics and video aren’t the greatest.  I think I’ll go back to snapping pics with my real camera.  But my phone, a Samsung Instinct, is really handy for snapping quick pics and uploading them to my computer via bluetooth (much easier than an iPhone — and that’s from a Mac guy — which will only awkwardly upload photos one at a time via email).

As you can see, my sons were excited to help me.  My oldest, Karson, who turns 15 soon, has been wanting to learn how to do everything, so I’ve taught him how to use the drill press, grinder, cutter, portable drill, sander and even the arc welder.  That’s been a priceless joy for me.

I’m hoping to get it running on my return from Seattle (Monday June 29 – Friday July 5) before my kids leave in mid-July.

1946 CJ-2A Eckert, Co eBay

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A

This CJ has a serial number of 75375.

“Jeep and trailer have been in the same family since at least 1956. Before that they are believed to have been the property of Denver Tramway Corporation. Except for periodic use they have been stored inside in an unheated garage in western Colorado, a very low humidity climate. Consequently both have very little rust. The Jeep hasn’t run for about 5 years because we tried to put a new gas tank in. Because of our mechanical ineptitude we couldn’t reconnect the fuel line from the tank to the engine block. Then we lost interest in the project. The original tank is still available if buyer wants it. In about 2000, before the fuel tank episode, we took the jeep in to get new belts, hoses, and battery. We put about 50 miles on it before we dicided to replace the fuel tank, which we did because the gas gauge wasn’t reading properly…..”

1948 CJ-2A Newark, Oh $4800

1948_cj2a_newarkUPDATE:  Buy it now price of $4800 has been added. Civil Defense Theme.

It looks like a fun rig in good shape. I though for sure I’ve listed this before.  I could find nothing on the web to suggest that this is the proper color scheme for a civil defense flattie (I believe they were all painted red) …. The seller also has another flattie for sale on ebay here.

“This is a really cool Willys! If you like theme vehicles, this is set up as a civil defense vehicle. Popular back in the sixties. It appears to be all original engine, drivetrain etc. Starts right up and runs good and shifts like it should through the gears.  It has like new tires, beauty rims, new battery and ignition switch, new shocks, a really nice tow bar for flat towing and it has lockout hubs so you don’t need to bring a trailer! All lights and turn signals work, including the red flashing emergency light on the fender. It has an ammo box between the seats where a radiation detector is stored. I don’t know if it works or not….”
