Toyota’s Jeep AK10 and Jeep BJ

• CATEGORIES: Fire/Police/Industry Vehicles, International, Other 4x4s

As usual, searching for something unrelated to Toyota lead me straight to the Toyota BJ (I was searching through some automobile history).  I knew very little about the Toyota Land Cruiser history, so the threads I’ll share below were very interesting to me.  The pics all came from the website, where there are plenty more pics of both the AK10 and the BJ.

According to Wikipedia, in response to a request by the Japanese government, Toyota developed the AK10 in 1942.  Apparently there are few surviving images and no surviving vehicles.  You can view the AK10 discussion thread at the website.

Again, according to Wikipedia, in 1950 the Korean War created demand for a military light duty vehicle.  The United States Government asked Toyota to build 100 vehicles based on Willys specs.  The following year, Toyota designed the BJ prototype.  While longer and more powerful (6cyl) than the 1/4 ton jeep, the BJ had no low range.  The National Police Agency (NPA) was impressed enough to put in an order for the Jeep BJ’s, which became their official patrol vehicle.  The BJ would have 3 different Models, a Touring model (BJ-T), a Radio model (BJ-R), and a Fire Engine Capable Model (BJ-J) [technically, I suppose these would be the english equivalent translations …].

In 1954, Willys-Overland put pressure on Toyota to cease using the “Jeep” name.  Technical director Hanji Umehara had the responsibility to rename the vehicle.  Interestingly, rather than compete with the Jeep label, he chose to compete directly with the Land Rover label.  He notes, “I had to come up with a name for our car that would not sound less dignified than those of our competitors. That is why I decided to call it ‘Land Cruiser’.”

Here are several images of the BJ that I found on the IH8MUD site.  You can see many more here The Toyota BJ ‘Jeep’ thread at the website.

1941? CJ-2A Gladwin, MI **SOLD**

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $1500.

(04/25/2015) I’m sure the year isn’t right, but I do think this is a CJ-2A.

“Posting this Jeep for my dad. Its a 1941 Jeep Willys 4×4 with plow. He has used it to plow his small private road the last few years and it ran great. He has been ill off and on with Cancer and he couldnt get it to start one day and though something was wrong with the carter WO 1bbl carb so he messed with it. Come to find out it was simply a charging issue that was fixed but now I believe he has the carb settings thrown off and the float level off and it wont start good and when it does it wont stay running. Probably could use a carb kit put on it anyways “around 30 bucks on ebay ” or a good cleaning as I believe it to be the original carb and motor. At any rate he is looking to sell or trade it for a tractor with a blade or garden type hydro tractor with snowplow or blower to do his drive and road with. Something he can handle a lil easier. Any questions please ask. I will answer them to the best of my ability. I have many..many more photos to share to those interested. Just shoot me an email address. Thanks for your time”

1950 Jeepster Ventura County, Ca $5500

• CATEGORIES: Jeepster

This has no title.

“’50 Willys Jeepster for sale- This is a tough decision for me, but here we go…I have had this one for nearly 10 years! I never wanted to part with it, but I’m getting tired of moving it from one storage place to another. I never made time for it and yes, I feel guilty. Its time for a new owner that will move this project forward.

The car has a fantastic rust free California body. Floors are perfect. Very rare to find any 60 year old car with this nice of a body, especially a convertible. The only rust I could find is a few bubbles on the lower portion of the passenger door.

The car looks original, but has a Ford small block V8 & 3 speed stick installed. The engine swap was done so long ago, it almost looks original to the car. It has always started easily and still runs strong. It has dual exhaust and sounds like an old wooden speed boat. It will need the normal things done such as oil change, brake servicing, etc. after the long time in storage.

The previous owners named this car the “African Queen”. Before selling the car to me, they had the car completely rewired, new hoses and fuel lines, new fuel pump, rebuilt carb, front end alignment, brake service, rebuilt distributor, etc. I have receipts for approx $3200 for this work. They also were preparing to get the car painted, and included a gallon of the correct yellow paint along with the other necessary reducers/hardeners, etc. One of the front fenders had some previous repairs, so I searched for replacement. I located a perfect NOS fender that I will include along with some other parts I gathered over the years from ebay and swap meets. I also bought some new steel rims which will be included also.

The car will need a simple straightforward restoration. If you prefer, it could also make a fun driver with just a quick repaint and some TLC. The title was lost, so the car will be sold using a bill of sale. It has been in storage since 2001, so it would be off the DMV computer. I’d take $5500 cash, or may consider an interesting trade for a classic car or motorcycle. I would really like to find a decent ’63 Ford Falcon (Futura or Sprint) 2 door coupe (Must be a V8 & 4 speed).

“1947 JEEP WILLYS CJ2 49K oringinal miles. My father and I bought this Jeep locally in the hopes of bringing it back to life. We have both been too busy to work on it which is the reason we’re selling it. As most of you know, these are extremely hard to find collector Jeeps. It is in pretty good condition in comparison to a lot of other Willys I’ve seen for sale. The flat-head four cylinder is out of it right now however can easily be put back in. The windshield frame is from the military version and is very rare. We are willing to deliver for the price of mileage. Carl saves a Willys Truck in St. Johns, NL, Canada

• CATEGORIES: Features, Willys Trucks

This truck was headed towards a crusher until Carl saved it.  He’s not sure what he’s going to do with it, but he felt there was too much value to have it crushed.  Note the custom wheel creation.

“Here are the pictures of the 55 Willys as I found it in a scrape metal collectors yard, it has its original running Super Hurricane engine 4 wheel drive components, head lights, park lights and dash all in tack, 20″ wheels were welded to the original 16’s and it spent the last few years hauling fire wood in rural Newfoundland. It had been abandoned and was set to go to the crusher when I found it and hauled it home.  Not sure at this point what I will do with it, it’s safe for now.”
